In Thursday’s “debate,” Bernie Sanders did admit that “Medicare For All” would require everyone to pay higher taxes, but he claimed it would be less than we currently pay for insurance coverage. Because he’s an expert on cost projections, coming from a state that tried and quickly abandoned single payer after it immediately ran far over budget.
(Sidebar: One thing these debates have exposed is just how little any of these candidates understand about economic issues. They have no clue how to pay for any of their big giveaway schemes, other than “tax the rich” and “print more money,” two answers I’d expect from eight-year-olds. And they seem to think all rich people are the same: just the monocled guy from the Monopoly game, only evil. For instance, they accuse Trump of only caring about Wall Street bankers, because...all rich people do, right? Trump is a real estate developer who is famous for fighting with Wall Street bankers over loans for his building projects. I have no doubt that he’s on a friendly, first-name basis with more Trump resort desk clerks than he is Wall Street bankers. But I digress.)
One thing that became apparent in the “debates” is that some candidates are still trying to assure Americans that giving away free health care as a “right” won’t force them to give up their private insurance.

Programming note: Next week, I’m giving my research, writing and tech staffers some time off from the headlines for the 4th of July vacation. But never fear, the newsletters will continue! I’ve prepared some non-topical commentaries that I hope you’ll enjoy. And our resident pop culture historian Pat Reeder has created a YouTube 4th of July Jukebox List of great but obscure songs related to patriotism and American history. There will be a new one in each mailing. Please check them out because I know you’ll get a kick out of hearing them.
Of course, if anything major does happen in the news, I’ll step back in and let you know about it. But with Congress safely out of Washington, just lean back and take a break with your family; enjoy the beaches, parks and picnics; and have fun watching some fireworks that are not of the political variety for a change.
From all of us at MikeHuckabee.com, have a happy, safe and patriotic Fourth of July week!

Kick off your Fourth of July week with a new, all-American episode of “Huckabee” tonight on TBN! I’ll welcome Taya Kyle, widow of Navy SEAL Chris “American Sniper” Kyle. Ryan Bomberger of the Radiance Foundation will tell us about his fight to expose the ugly racist side of the abortion industry. The twin titans of real estate, David and Jason Benham, will tell us how they flip houses while refusing to flip-flop on their moral principles. Hilarious comic Jeff Allen will bring the funny to the picnic. Plus I’ll have some serious commentary and crazy news “In Case You Missed It.” For added fireworks, we’ll end with music from country/Christian star, Danny Gokey, who first came to fame on “American Idol.”
So get your patriotic family celebration started early with “Huckabee,” tonight at 8 and 11 EST, 7 and 10 CST, and the same times on Sunday, on TBN. To find your local TBN channel and stream previous episodes online, visit https://www.tbn.org/programs/huckabee
Laura Ainsworth: My 20 questions for the next Democrat "debate"
By Laura Ainsworth
It struck me after the two extremely lame Democrat “debates” that a lot of questions just didn’t get asked –- and will no doubt NEVER be asked, let alone answered, as long as the moderators are from NBC and MSNBC. (Rachel Maddow? Come on!) So here’s my list of 20 questions for their next “debate,” some serious and some just for fun.
1. As a progressive, you want to restrict or perhaps ban gun ownership, but you also favor open borders. If you open the borders and don’t have ICE to police people coming in and what they are bringing with them, how will you address the huge black market of guns for criminals after limiting or even destroying the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding Americans?
Other news you might have missed...
Quick Fact/Reality Check: In last night’s “debate,” Pete Buttigieg declared, "If guns made us safer, we'd be the safest country on Earth."
Actually, as Stephen Green pointed out at PJ Media, gun ownership has increased over the last 25 years while violent crime has declined. But to get even more specific, if you removed the relatively small geographic areas where violent crime mostly occurs – which are heavily concentrated in Democrat-run big cities with strict anti-gun laws – America is one of the safest countries on Earth. In fact, over half of all murders occur in just 2% of US counties, while 54% of counties had zero murders.
I read one keen observation online that if America wanted to drop its rate of gun violence by a significant amount overnight, all we’d have to do is give Chicago to Canada.
Fake News: Much of the past two day’s Democratic “debates” centered on slamming President Trump for “putting kids in cages.” But Thursday at a conference sponsored by the Center for Immigration Studies, Obama-era ICE official Thomas Homan reminded us that the facilities the Democrats are describing as “cages” were built under Obama in fiscal 2015.
Homan also noted that they aren’t “cages.” The chain link wall shown in the viral photo was actually to divide the children’s section from the adults. It’s to keep the children safe. And note the photo at the link, which is now clearly labeled to make it clear who was in charge when that picture was taken. Hint: It wasn’t Trump.
The Pentagon has invented a device that can identify a person from hundreds of meters away, just by their heartbeat. This is amazing, considering how many Democrats can’t even tell from a heartbeat that a person is a living person.
Finally, the commentary this field deserves: Dave Barry looks at the Democratic “debates.”
