We’ve received many letters in response to yesterday's story on the Salvation Army. (A follow-up story ran today.) Here are few that called out for responses.

From Larry (excerpt):

Love your show and your website, have for a long time. Just want to express a concern about people falling in the trap of using racist terms that are promoted by the left. You used one of the most racist terms in your article when you said " people of color." ...White is a color, it's just not one the racist democrats like.

It's just one of many things that non-Democrats fall prey to because they don't stop to think about a word before they just accept it and start using it.

As I said, we've always thought you were, and still are, one of the smartest people in the public eye that speaks for Conservatives and Christians. Best wishes.

From the Gov:

Thanks for writing, Larry, and for your kind words. We’re really sensitive to the language and how leftists try to shape it, and are glad to see you are, too. Keep in mind that commentaries include quotations, and these are run in quotation marks exactly as they were originally stated. The commentary you refer to included lengthy excerpts from a CRT-based publication, and that’s the term they used. I wouldn’t soften or censor what someone else said unless it was vulgar or otherwise over-the-line offensive.

We all have different ideas on how to use language respectfully to refer to race, and it continues to evolve. Personally, I’m baffled as to why leftists like the abbreviation “POC” for “people of color,” because it also stands for something offensive. But, again, I and my staff didn't use either of these; we were just quoting someone else.

From Jane (excerpt):

I am of heavy Irish descent. In fact I am Irish Catholic, which is amongst the Irish the most discriminated against, including by our own government (my grandfather was only allowed to work for the government if he professed himself to be an orange man)...I guess the existence of Irish slaves in the colonies (who were considered to be less valuable than the black slaves) is an inconvenient truth to yet another position that the Democrats take in order to control people. So, are there any non-woke charities out there that we can donate gently used items to?

From the Gov:

Thank you, Jane, for a history lesson that most people never receive. This is why it does no good for some groups to do a personal accounting of the accumulated grievances that were done to their ancestors. An ideology based on past victimhood poisons the present. As for non-woke charities, I’m sure there are still quite a few, and it’s always good to start close to home.

From Dale:

I am really disappointed that Huckabee would write something that can be damaging to the Salvation Army. They have already recanted and removed those Guides which could be wrongly construed. I will be canceling my daily Huckabee Newsletter because of this!!

From the Gov:

Dale, I hope you’ll stay. Actually, if you see the update today, the SA is “reviewing” those guides but has not recanted. Perhaps they will, and I’ll update the story if they do. But so far, they’ve blamed readers for believing they’ve promoted damaging ideas they actually HAVE promoted. This poison has turned some once-laudable organizations into something very different in 2021.

I did not specifically call for a boycott of the SA, and will not. But it would be a failure on my part not to report on what’s happening to major charities in the U.S. That’s the only way they’re going to be brought back to sanity.

Finally, this from Duncan:

News flash, woke people!!! EVERYONE has 'unconscious bias' about someone or something. If you claim to be completely conscious you better notify the Dalai Llama. He might have some advice for you to help you cope with total enlightenment.

It does behoove all of us to be aware of the possibility that we may be unaware of our faults. On the other hand, let's not let fear(s) paralyze us to living and growing. The most simple and central tenant of Christianity, ‘Treat thy neighbor as you would be treated,' pretty much says it all.

Thanks Governor for your ongoing clear common-sense publications. Keep it going!

From the Gov:

Thanks, Duncan. You have indeed said it all, so you get the last word.

"White" technically is not a 'color'. You cannot find it anywhere in the color spectrum, and is considered to be "absent of all colors". To get thoroughly into the concept of "color" one has to determine whether one is talking about "additive" or "subtractive" color. I seem to recall that this was all taught in school....
But, considering how our children are being 'taught' today......

You were right on with your piece on the SA. In Texas we say: get woke, go broke. That applies to the SA also.

Long ago I learned a song in Sunday School and the meaning has stuck with me all my years.
"Jesus loves the little Children, All the children of the world, Red and yellow, black and white, They are precious in His sight, Jesus loves the little children of the world." I'm sure you know it well. Until age 14 when we moved to California, I lived in Tennessee and Virginia, obviously southern states; however, I never heard my parents or grandparents or friends ever say anything derogatory about another race/color of skin. Now to have some people assume I am racist because of my white skin is an outrageous insult. PS: My husband and I donate to the Salvation Army and will continue to do so in order to help people in our community no matter what their ethnicity. PPS: My father was raised in the Arkansas Ozarks and was happy to have shoes, no matter how well they fit. But that's another story. Adversity sometimes brings love and understanding. Thank you for all you do.

The problem with the Salvation Army is how few people they help. I was a bookkeeper in a local SA office and 98% of the money coming in went to overhead and only 2% to actually helping people. Do your homework and ask your local SA what percentage of the money they raise actually go to people that need help!

    Governor Mike,
Great show last night! I will take small issue with your assessment of 'race.' Race indeed is a social construct pretty much invented in the last 200-300 years. Biologically and genetically the human genome is the same throughout all 'races' of the human species.

The variations in characteristics is more properly referred to in genetics as phenotype. The best example of phenotype that we are all familiar with is expressed in dogs. We breed dogs to express certain traits and thus we end up with a wide range of breeds with consistent characteristics of weight, color, size, shape etc. Nonetheless, they are all dogs sharing the same basic genome.
No one ever asks, 'What race is your dog?' now do they? That question would sound pretty silly.
Race was 'invented' for social purposes just like the caste system in India.
The phrase POC is particularly silly. Save for albinos everyone has some measure of melatonin pigmentation ranging from 'white' to darker shades. Moreover, whatever your 'base' shade is in winter it is bound to change in the summer. Does one then change 'races' seasonally? LOL
How ignorant we all are - we have common ancestors - Adam and Eve - same genome then, same genome now.

The reader above, Dale, is focused on a completely "fictitious" model of the real money being filtered into our economy and the support received from multiple billionaires like Jeff Bezos, Mark Zuckerberg, and other leaders of prominent corporations who continue to perpetuate lies and misinformation to control prospective citizens who are the lower end of the economic spectrum based on needed skills for employment. They've become weaponized by the sheer numbers of Leftist political pawns in an attempt to turn this beautiful country up on its end and turn us into a Communist wasteland. They keep the same extremely limited legal and "Illegal Aliens" under their thumb and control.
These people who feel like they have a place in this ever-growing page in fictitious history, are blinded by the pure fiction that Leftists will one day lift and empower those followers already on crutches - the poorest Americans!
Never again will they extend more hands with the same economic and housing benefits. The loss of job availability will ultimately suffocate the entire poorest group of citizens in the US and even those still crossing the border at multiple points of entry. Where and when will the "Salvation Army" put its money where its mouth is and support good conservative policies to employ those in the "legal" entry line? The "floaters" who currently remain in Mexico should stay in Mexico until they are vaxed, vetted, have provided addresses and have their paper work to confirm their legal entry for citizenship! Mr. Huckabee, these are probably the most important issues concerning those of us who are American by birth and are struggling with the radical Leftist movement to keep our country, our borders, and deny accessibility to those who continue selling women and children, or murdering those temporarily under their thumb until they receive the money required by the coyotes to be smuggled into our sovereign nation. The operations and purposes of the cartels are patently illegal, and the coyotes who smuggle innocent South Americans into our country are using them as mules. Thanks for letting me spill the beans on the growing number of WOKE corporations that we all thought were American companies! I've been shocked by what the money can do when a single flash of green cash an send them reeling in the dough. It's terrible how they've treated my President, President Donald J. Trump! Our former President galvanized the Patriots by becoming connected to their Conservative cause and their mutual desire to keep our country Number 1!

My comment is only to commend you for publishing what you know at the time and for correcting anything if you learn something to be true or untrue later. You are one of the few commentators I trust these days and I am truly grateful for you and the work that you do for all of us.

I think Rodney King had it right, "Can't we all just get along?" But as long as Race Hustlers and Wokesters keep stirring the pot, it will continue to stink!

Those deplorable white people (I am Caucasian but by no means white)have been faithful in giving to the Salvation Army over the years-----no longer for me, though. Texas Baptist Men have shown up here after hurricanes to do so much work-----all free for us-----that they will get my donation dollars. Most of my donations go to my church and we are a mixed race church.

Just a fun piece of information that made think when you used the term "people of color" and a reader responded "white is a color" What is interesting when I look at that remark is that white is the presence of all colors. That is how God made us - all the same. :)
