As families start to gather from far and near on Christmas Eve, this story perfectly illustrates how nothing can keep us apart from the ones we love at this blessed time of year.

A listener named Phyllis wrote that it was Christmas Eve, 1942.  A young woman was waiting, pregnant and alone, for her husband of 4 months, who'd been drafted into the Army and was training to be a pilot somewhere in the Arizona desert.  He had written to her that he couldn't get leave, so they would not be together on their first Christmas as husband and wife. Refusing to let herself get discouraged, she kept a light on in the window as she wrapped a few gifts.

Meanwhile, he was way off in Arizona, quietly reading letters from her, when his sergeant came into the barracks and asked what he was doing there on Christmas Eve.  When he heard about the soldier’s pregnant wife, the sarge gave him permission to go home. But that was just the first obstacle down.

The young private grabbed a few belongings and raced to find any way to get back to California. But there were no more trains or buses that night.  So he walked to the nearest highway and stuck out his thumb.

Somehow, he hitchhiked 450 miles home. His last ride dropped him off several miles from the cottage where his pregnant wife was.  He walked the last few miles in pitch darkness, assuming that at that late hour, his wife would have long since gone to bed.  But as he neared the little house, he saw the light shining in the bedroom window.

When he opened the door, he found his darling, still awake and thrilled to be in his arms again. She'd waited up for him, never giving up hope that her dearest would find some way to be home for Christmas.  Phyllis wrote, "This true story was told to me by my dad before he passed away in 2000. The young couple were my parents…And I was the baby they were expecting."

I'm glad that Phyllis’ parents' faith in the power of love to overcome all obstacles was passed down to her, and I thank her for passing their family’s cherished story on to us.

This is a current Christmas story: in answer to a comment from a friend asking if I received something new from God this year, I wrote...

I think I did receive a few ‘new’ things from God this Christmas.
One was today when we took our youngest grandson, Olli who is 7, to redeem the gift card we gave him to “Build a Bear” in the mall. Seeing Christmas again through his innocent, excited, imaginative eyes was definitely a gift. He counted the minutes until we picked him up at the appointed time of 11 am, and on the drive wanted to see the printed details again. Once there he took his time to make his choice. They had a special offer of Christmas to pick a second animal for just $10 more. After that he carefully looked at ALL the outfits and accessories and noted each price tag while calculating what he had left to spend. In the end, he went over budget and asked if I’d be okay with him giving me the extra from his savings when he got home. (The first thing he did after putting the bag in his room was get out his small zip-lock bag of dollar bills to repay me.). After the purchase we chose a restaurant in the food court to have lunch. Then, while we waited at a table for the order, he got out the very small baby bear (an add-on), sat him on the table, and started to make-believe. So cute to hear him doing that without embarrassment!
Life goes by so quickly and it’s easy to get caught up in nonessentials. I experienced Christmas through the eyes of Olli!! Thank you Lord!

Mike, I was abandoned at the age of 1-1/2 and put into a convent . I didn;t know about Christmas except the stories the nuns told us about Mary,Joseph and the baby born in a manger. Our Christmas gift was a stocking with walnuts and fruit
but we thought it was the best.
I met my husband when I was eighteen after running away from the convent
I now know the true meaning of Love and faith. Rick proposed to me after dating 6 weeks and I told him that I did't know what being in love means however his response was , no worries I have enough love for both of us, so we got married. Now our Christmas is always a Blessing sharing with our family and friends. We were blessed with two sons and 4 Grand children and now on the way our first Great Grandchild. Being with this precious man
for 58 years he has taught me the love of God,the power of prayer and the special love that people can share. My favorite verse is Philippians 4:13 I can do all things through Christ who Strengthens me. This has helped me restore my faith in human beings ,believe in myself and achieve whatever I put my mind to. I am so happy now and thank God every day for all the blessings in my life. I am not an orphan any more but a very loved wife and mother.
Merry Christmas to you and your family, your newsletters inspire me.

Every Christmas I have with my family and friends is the best Christmas ever. Every single one has its own different, personal, special moments that makes— made them , all very memorable to me. Sometimes there is no way to know who will be here next year, who will not be here next year for what ever reason. Sometimes you just know this will be the last time you ever have Christmas together with someone you love. Make every Christmas as special as you possibly can. Enjoy everyone you love at every moment you can. Be kind to everyone you talk to, you don’t know what they might be going through. Peace on Earth — if only! Happy Birthday,Jesus Christ.

Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift: Jesus. The lady (Phyllis) in the story about Christmas 1942 would be 77 years old in 2019 (I am 75 years old). When I was born in 1944, my family (all 9 of them) were together at 114 N. Franklin in New Ulm Minnesota. We were blessed greatly by God's mercy and grace. With great love, I remember what a wonderful mom my mother was, and she (Emma C. Nolte) was an angel sent by our Lord to us; she lived to be almost 86 years old. Lord Jesus, we praise, thank and bless you for being our Savior and Lord. You are the King of kings, the Lord of lords, and the Prince of Peace.

That is the kind of love that needs to be spread across the country. Our short tempered pop. needs to get more of this kind of love and spread it across the country. I am 78 and we have been married 53 years. I wouldn't have it any other way.
    Merry Christmas! Elwin Valberg
