The argument for codifying these barbaric practices into law over the objections of parents is that denying such “gender-affirming care” will lead to the deaths of “trans kids.” That’s mostly based on a study by University of Washington Medicine that allegedly found rates of depression in transgender teens “plummet” after they receive such treatments. The study of 104 patients age 13-20 at Seattle Children’s Hospital reportedly found that they experienced a 60% reduction in depression and a 73% drop in harmful or suicidal thoughts. This was and still is being used to justify laws allowing these irreversible procedures on minors without parental consent.

One problem: It’s not true. There was no noticeable improvement. The rate of depression in kids before and after GAM (“gender-affirming medicine”) went from 59% to 56%. The rate of those with thoughts of self-harm or suicide fell slightly from 45% to 37%, but that’s still not considered statistically significant.

It’s claimed that the school’s communications department misinterpreted the report with no ulterior motives (seriously?)  UW Medicine quietly issued a corrected version a month later, in April 2022. Yet the original false version is still being cited by trans medicine activists.

Worse, as reported as the link, a spokeswoman for the Department of Epidemiology emailed colleagues that while there were some “pretty concerning claims” about the report’s accuracy, “As there is an overwhelming amount of positive coverage of the study’s findings, I don’t believe there’s a need for a proactive response beyond continuing to monitor.” In other words, because the false report got so much good publicity for the school, just keep your mouths shut and don’t call attention to the fact that it was wrong, even if kids are being drugged and mutilated because of it.

I hope the fact that this is coming to light at last will help slam the brakes on this unconscionable quack experimentation on children. I also hope that the way UW Medicine handled this will bring them lots of the type of publicity they deserve.
