Perhaps the worst revelation to emerge during the investigation of an obvious attempt to bring down a duly elected President is that Lady Justice is not blindfolded –- that there is one form of “justice” for the politically well-connected and another for those whose persecution can HELP the politically well-connected.
It should also be mentioned that more often than not lately, Lady Justice has been wearing an “I’m With Her” button.
We’re getting an infuriating look behind the curtain now at how the “deep state” bureaucracy worked to keep Hillary Clinton in the game at all costs, under the assumption that if she could just be kept on legal life support until the election, she would be the next President of the United States, and all their abuses of power would be buried forever. And it’s still working to help those well-connected people.
Consider the two very different stories of a couple of former business partners: one-time Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort and his partner Tony Podesta, who happens to be the brother of former Hillary campaign chairman John Podesta. (I know, it seems odd that these two would have been in business together, but that’s Washington DC.)
Paul Manafort has been pursued relentlessly by special counsel Robert Mueller, for allegations of financial misconduct that go back a decade and are totally unrelated to any work he did for Donald Trump. He’s got cases against him filed in two different courts, one in DC and one in the Eastern District of Virginia, and the Virginia judge has not made a secret of his opinion that Mueller’s prosecution is designed to get his target to “sing,” or, if necessary, “compose.” Because of allegations that Manafort tried to contact potential witnesses, he’s now denied bail and languishing in SOLITARY CONFINEMENT until he is tried. Talk about a way to get someone to sing!
Tony Podesta, in contrast, is one of five witnesses being offered immunity by the Mueller team in exchange for his testimony. The brother of John Podesta –- who is perhaps best known for being the “weak spot” in Hillary’s email chain because his password was “password” –- worked with Manafort in a PR campaign for the nonprofit organization European Centre for a Modern Ukraine, which may have been funded by a pro-Russian Ukrainian political group that was funded by Russian oligarchs. (“Oligarch” is just a shady-sounding word for “billionaire.”) The now-defunct Podesta Group got in trouble because it may have violated the sporadically-enforced Foreign Agents Registration Act, or FARA, which states that Americans who lobby for foreign governments, leaders or political parties must disclose their activities with the Justice Department. Oops, they didn’t.
As Tucker Carlson said on his show Thursday night, both Manafort and Podesta would have been facing essentially the same charges, but they’re being treated very differently. “In other words, for a near-identical crime, Bill and Hillary’s friend could escape and emerge completely unscathed while Paul Manafort may rot in jail,” Carlson said. “Only one of them made the mistake of chairing Donald Trump’s presidential campaign.”
It’s reportedly the Virginia case in which Podesta was given the immunity deal to testify against Manafort. I’d love to know what the judge is thinking about that!
