PRESIDENT TRUMP ACTS ON POLICE REFORM
Yesterday, President Trump signed an executive order on police reform, saying that there are a “tiny” group of bad cops and nobody wants to get rid of them more than the overwhelming majority of good cops. Sen. Tim Scott has been working on a GOP police reform bill as well. The Republican measures include new federal guidelines for training and professional standards (such as banning chokeholds unless the officer’s life is in danger), providing police with non-lethal weapons, having non-police professionals involved in dealing with cases such as homeless people and addicts, and perhaps most importantly, allowing the sharing of information, perhaps in a national database, among police departments, so that cops with a history of complaints can’t simply move to a new location.
Police unions usually oppose reform plans, but they seem to like Trump’s. The unions adamantly oppose Democrat demands to end “qualified immunity,” which protects officers from being held legally accountable for damages unless they violated a clearly established right.
The mother of Ahmaud Arbery, a black man shot to death while jogging in Georgia, also praised Trump’s order as a good start.
As usual, Democrats blasted Republican plans for not going far enough. Every crisis always seems to result in a Democratic plan written in two days that goes too far and mostly does things they wanted to do anyway, from dealing with climate change with a $92 trillion “Green New Deal” to fighting the coronavirus by spending $3 trillion on Democratic dream projects like voting by mail. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said the House plan will not pass the Senate because it’s typical Democratic overreach, trying to run local police departments from Washington. He urged Democrats to work with Senate Republicans and get serious about passing a law, not just playing politics.
But the Democrats are already playing politics by denying even the existence of reforms that President Trump has already achieved to help African-Americans, and by blasting Republicans for not going far enough. When you hear that, remember this: they talked for years about prison sentencing reform and never did it. Trump signed it. They talked for decades about creating jobs for black workers. Trump did it. They talk about the failures of schools in black neighborhoods but protect those schools from serious reform while blocking black parents from taking their kids elsewhere. The cities with the worst records of police corruption and violence against blacks have been under solid Democratic control for decades. And they held both Congress and the White House for two full years under Obama and never did a single thing on police reform or any of the other current issues they claim are long-standing crises. They even said they were crises back then, and still did nothing. As Sen. Lindsey Graham said at the press conference, this has been around since long before Trump and Democrats did nothing about it, so spare us all the blaming of Trump for it.
On the other hand, if Democrats can’t blame Trump for everything that’s wrong in life, what would they do with all that free time every day?
GOOGLE'S DOUBLE STANDARDS
Whenever some big tech platform bans someone for violating its terms of service, they always claim they’re non-partisan. But they always seem to deplatform conservatives for the slightest, even imaginary, violations, while allowing the most violent and offensive speech from the left. But this week, Google may have finally whacked the beehive too hard and brought so much negative attention that the law could end up being changed. Some Silicon Valley socialist billionaires might wish they’d been more even-handed.
It all started when NBC News, citing a dodgy and biased British self-proclaimed “watchdog” (you can see how dodgy and biased here)…
...accused the conservative websites The Federalist and ZeroHedge of “pushing unsubstantiated claims” about the Black Lives Matter movement, and Google reportedly banned them from taking part in the Google Ads program that generates their revenue. NBC didn’t bother to identify what this alleged “content that promotes hatred, intolerance, violence or discrimination based on race” was.
After the story caused a major uproar, Google claimed that The Federalist had never been demonetized, and that the offensive content was in the unmonitored “comments” section. But the backpedaling might not be enough this time: NBC and Google are being accused of colluding to silence smaller, non-leftist voices, and there are calls to break Google up as a monopoly. Sen. Ted Cruz called Google’s actions an attack on free speech and sent them some questions that might be the first step to new legislation to reign in the power of big tech platforms.
One of these issues might involve changes to “Section 230,” the part of federal law that allows social media platforms to avoid lawsuits by being classified as neutral “platforms” that aren’t responsible for what commenters say, rather than “publishers” who control what gets seen. Cruz pointed out that Google tried to hold the Federalist and ZeroHedge responsible for what their commenters say, while Google enjoys Section 230 protection, even though it owns YouTube, where thousands of “profane, racist, and indefensible comments” are posted daily.
Full disclosure: over the past couple of weeks, we’ve had a couple of pages at MikeHuckabee.com barred by Google, and they were completely inoffensive. They weren’t even commentaries; they were just posts of video of news makers from Fox News interviews. When challenged, Google removed the bans. But I can’t help wondering if this is a new move to try to hold conservative sites responsible for comments when the big tech sites are not.
In the meantime, please be careful when writing your comments. We wouldn’t want to violate Google’s double standards.
DENVER SCHOOL BOARD REMOVES POLICE FROM SCHOOLS
In the rush to do away with police, the Denver School Board voted unanimously to remove police from schools, where they have been monitoring students and campuses for 22 years.
Critics of the police in schools claim that they disproportionately arrest and ticket black and Latino students and that being in contact with armed police “messes with your psyche” and the monitors should have more of a mentoring relationship with students. But a police spokesman said the critics don’t understand the nuances of the job: they don’t set out every day to arrest and ticket students, but the public doesn’t realize how many knives, guns and drugs they’ve confiscated from students.
Good luck to the caring, unarmed mentors in getting a gun away from a teenage drug dealer. Incidentally, I thought that one of the main reasons for having cops in schools was to prevent school shootings. So we now know that students can bring in guns and there will be no cops around to take them away. How quickly they forgot what that can lead to. And in Colorado! Apparently, school children’s lives don’t matter.
LIBERALS: NOW GUNS ARE GOOD...OR AT LEAST WE WON'T SAY THEY ARE BAD
Speaking of guns, liberals have actually found yet another way to be hypocrites. For years, we’ve heard that we desperately need “common sense” gun control laws, such as bans on “assault weapons” and carrying weapons in public places, extensive background checks, safety training and waiting periods whenever a gun changes hands.
But at the occupied lunatic zone in Seattle, the self-proclaimed “warlord” Raz not only carries around a semi-automatic rifle in a crowded area, he was also captured on video handing them out like Halloween candy from the trunk of a Tesla to people of unknown age and background – and who obviously barely knew which end of a gun the bullet comes out of.
So to recap: the coronavirus is deadly and can’t be allowed to spread by letting people go to work or attend churches or synagogues or a Trump rally – but if you go to a BLM protest, no problem…
...Also, only the police should be allowed to have guns – but the police should be fired because they’re all violent racist monsters. And well-trained, law-abiding citizens who carry guns are terrorists, but terrorists who carry guns in violation of every law, both formal and common sense, are “keeping the peace” in a festival atmosphere.
BLAME AMERICA FIRST
Blame America First: Virginia Democratic Senator and Hillary Clinton 2016 running mate Tim Kaine has a law degree from Harvard, but he’s joined the “don’t know much about history” crowd. In a speech on police reform, Kaine declared that the first slaves came to America in 1619, and that “the United States didn’t inherit slavery from anybody. We created it.
As noted at the link, not only did the United States not yet exist in 1619, but slavery had existed for many centuries, all over the world (indeed, in nations that did not fight a bloody civil war to end it, slavery still exists.) I know that liberals love to attack conservatives for believing that the Bible is actual history, but in this case, I’d suggest that Sen. Kaine pick up a Bible and discover just how long slavery was around before there even was a United States of America for Democrats to blame for all the evils since the beginning of time.
BIBLE VERSE OF THE DAY (KJV)
"Cause me to hear thy lovingkindness in the morning;
for in thee do I trust:
cause me to know the way wherein I should walk;
for I lift up my soul unto thee."
