Today's Commentary:  Georgia mom speaks out -- Prescription drugs for...huh? -- Dove, what were you thinking? -- Oxford student union backtracks -- Twitter gets lesson in First Amendment -- Additional Commentaries

A shocked Georgia mom launched a complaint against her daughter’s school after her sixth-grade class was given a quiz that asked them to identify their “sexual identity.” It included ten options to choose from – that’s right, I said ten – and students then had to identify and differentiate between them all. The mom thinks it’s outrageous to expect a kid who still watches Nickelodeon to know what all those sexual classifications mean. I'm an adult, and frankly, I don't know if even I could think of ten different sexual orientations.

Here’s a wild idea: how about letting kids be kids and stop trying to impose inappropriate adult subjects on them? Just let them watch Spongebob Squarepants without having to obsess about his pants.

Happy Friday America!

Prescription drugs for...huh??

By Mike Huckabee

Here’s a fascinating story about a little-known perk for the folks on Capitol Hill: an on-site medical clinic that costs members of Congress just over $600 a year, plus an old-style pharmacy that delivers prescription medications to that clinic for convenient pick-up.

Dating from 1867, Grubb’s is the oldest pharmacy in Washington and once sold quinine and dandruff cures, but today it fills many prescriptions for our senators and representatives, for whom doctors have prescribed a wide variety of the latest drugs. Including drugs for Alzheimer’s disease.

Dove, what were you thinking??

By Mike Huckabee

The Dove line of beauty products has had some distinctive ad campaigns in recent years, based on the overall theme of encouraging women to have self-esteem and embrace their unique shapes and sizes. Some women have appreciated the ads; others, not so much. But this time, with a Facebook ad that ran over the weekend, Dove brought virtually everyone together to ask them, “What were you thinking??”

As for Dove, they’ve apologized and pulled the ad. A similarly racially-insensitive ad that appeared in 2011 was blamed on an intern.

Oxford Student Union backtracks

By Mike Huckabee

Update: After garnering worldwide bad press and a unanimous rebuke by students, an Oxford University student union has decided that maybe Christian student groups aren’t repressive neo-colonialists after all and should be allowed to set up a table at freshman fairs. Sounds like they had the fear of God put into them.

Twitter gets lesson in First Amendment

By Mike Huckabee

There’s an update to the story about Twitter blocking a pro-life campaign ad by Tennessee Rep. Marsha Blackburn, who’s running for Bob Corker’s Senate seat, after a reference to selling fetal body parts was deemed potentially “inflammatory.” Apparently, their lawyers advised them about a little thing called the First Amendment --- in particular, how it applies to political campaign speech --- because they’ve actually issued an apology of sorts and will run the ad after all.

Read the full story here. I include a link to it because it offers full details; however, the last couple of paragraphs also offer a Journalism 101 example of how to slant a news story --- surprisingly, in this case (because it comes from FOX News), to the left. So get out your red pencils when you reach that part. Look at the gratuitous phrase “which is legal if no profit is made.” The issue surrounding Planned Parenthood is precisely that they WERE doing this for profit. Better to say, “which his illegal if profit is made.” Also, the final paragraph clearly advocates for the use of fetal tissue; placed at the very end of the piece, it’s a hit-and-run that slams Blackburn for her view while simultaneously ending the discussion. If you noticed the manipulation behind this structure, you get an “A.” (And I wouldn't blame you for speculating that this is the part contributed by the AP.)

    Dear Govenor

I noticed that on the E-Mail edition there is an advertisement for men's underwear. I find it offensive. I know it takes $$ to post your blog. On the web edition the add is for "Field Supply".
    Would you switch adds

Thank you Governor Huckabee. I always like to read your take on current happenings! Makes me sad, too, to witness the Fox News Network seeming to be leaning farther and farther to the left! Apparent since the sons have been in control. I look forward to your new program on TBN this weekend! God Bless you and your family.
