Will Jeff Sessions go?

July 25, 2017

It’s never a comfortable spot to be in when your boss is complaining about you on Twitter and in the New York Times, as Attorney General Jeff Sessions is finding out. Even more worrisome is when you still have the job, but the media are already speculating on your replacement.

Here’s a little comfort for Attorney General Jeff Sessions: Rudy Giuliani insists that he has no interest in taking over Sessions’ job. In fact, that might be Sessions’ best guarantee of job security: nobody else wants his job. Giuliani also said that he told President Trump that he agreed with Sessions’ decision to recuse himself from the Russia investigation and thought it was the correct decision under Justice Department regulations.

Then again, if everyone obeyed Justice Department conflict-of-interest regulations, there wouldn’t be any controversy over how to deal with special counsel Robert Mueller because he would have stepped aside himself, the minute we learned that his chief witness, James Comey, was his former protégé and leaked his notes to the New York Times to manipulate the appointment of his former mentor as special counsel. These guys couldn’t be any deeper in each other’s pockets if they were roommates at a pickpockets’ convention.

I agree with you that Mr. Mueller needs "to go---out of Washington, into private life". He has already hurt our President. No wonder our President has such a hard time getting his program.....even his thoughts.....organized with all the hoopla going on about him. THIS NEEDS TO BE STOPPED IMMEDIATELY. HOW COULD ANYBODY GET ANYTHING DONE! Our country is moving ahead in the economy, getting rid of illegal criminals to make our country great and the strengthening of our military.....GO MR PRESIDENT! God will guide every step of the way! ! ! ! I read what Dr. Jeffers had in the paper today...AND HE IS RIGHT ON.!

Mr. Huckabee, I wanted to vote in your survey, but it wasn't a yes or no choice for me at this time. I feel very badly about what is happening to our President. The daily assault on his integrity is alarming, and truly understand his frustration. Why can't AG Sessions continue his important work on sanctuary cities, illegal immigration, and also investigate the crimes that have real evidence of Democrats involved in collusion, corruption, pay-to-play politics? Mueller needs to go. The AG is the only one that can put a stop to this ever expanding assault on our President, and he's recused himself. There is no one to rein in Mueller after he found no Russia collusion. The investigation should stop.
    Respectfully,
    JoElla Marion

After being chosen as the Attorney General candidate, Jeff Sessions told the senators during his confirmation hearings that he would recuse himself from any investigations of Hillary Clinton's email server or the Clinton charitable foundation.

Having done this, President Trump needs to stop criticizing him for not looking into Clinton's emails etc. This shouldn't stop members of Congress or other departments within the Judicial Branch from investigating.

I believe Sessions did the right thing to step down. As I remember, he did it because he had contact with the Russian Diplomat earlier and even tho it had nothing to do with the campaign, he felt it was a distraction and that he needed to back down because of it. I am shocked that the President did not understand that. What scares me is if President Trump continues to attack the people that works for him, he will loose many great and brilliant people plus many of his supporters. I know if I now worked from him or was being considered for a position, I would think twice if I would stay or accept the position. Sessions is not Trumps lawyer, he works for the people.

I REALLY LIKE JEFF SESSIONS AND I FEEL IF HE'S FIRED THAT IF PRESIDENT TRUMP RUNS FOR RE-ELECTION HE WILL LOSE! ANY PEOPLE ALL OVER ESPECIALY ALABAMA LOVES JEFF SESSIONS. I FEL PRESIDENT TRUMP SHOULD QUIT PUTTINH JEFF SESSIONS DOWN IN HIS TWEET OR IN PUBLIC.

I feel that firing him would be just what the Dems would wish for and they can go long as they wish in approving a replacement for him and finding someone as a replacement would be difficult, to say the least, and it might be someone much worse. I think the President should sit down and have a private talk with him and try to work through his feelings of frustration over it all and try to work it out with Mr. Sessions. Also, stop with the tweets, publicly shaming him, just pray about it and go back to sleep!!!!

Please, Mr. Huckabee, will you communicate to the president that we were all counting on him to make wise decisions, listen to wise and Godly counsel, and not continue to be childish. He would surely appear foolish if he fires or forces out Jeff Sessions. Does he not have the sense to know these issues should be discussed in private? Many of us supported Trump because the thought of having his opponent in office was terrifying. Not because we want him to continue stumbling along insulting people. We need to see some maturity in order not to lose confidence in him completely. We've already been shaken to the core by republican leaders' cowardice.

I really admire Jeff Sessions and think President Trump is fortunate to have an AG who has integrity, knowledge of the constitution, commitment to our country, dignity and much more! He is not there to protect the President but for all Americans to enforce our laws and justice for all. If the President breaks the law, he is subject to the AG and the law as all other citizens are. I am a supporter of President Trump and appreciate most of his agenda but I am deeply disappointed in him over his disloyalty to a man who was one of the first to come to his defense and support as you were, Gov. Huckabee! God bless you.

I understand the president's frustration with Sessions but feel the way he is handling this shows a lack of respect. It's also beneath the dignity of the presidency to carry on the way Trump does in such a public way. I did not expect Trump to change when he got into office, but I did hope that the respect for the office would inspire him to act with more dignity.

I understand why Trump is upset, but he shouldn't be attacking Sessions. You can't draw bees with vinegar. What is really shameful is those Republicans who lied to get elected and refused to repeal Obamacare. People will blame Trump for their backstabbing. Trump is a straight forward, hold nothing back person. He's a good man and is trying to be a good President, but our own party is helping to defeat him because they don't like the way he does things. They're letting their personal opinions get in the way of doing what is best for our country. Makes me wonder; what do the dems have on them that they don't want publicized?

I applaud AG Sessions for recusing himself from the Russia investigation, since he was active in the campaign. We have had enough of politicized AG's in the recent past, and it is refreshing to find one who follows correct protocol and is his own man. If Trump wants an AG he can boss around and is loyal to his wishes regardless of the rule of law, shame on him. I did vote for Trump, but am becoming more and more skeptical of his motives. He should not be dealing with this situation via twitter. It is so unprofessional. Speak with his appointees in private if he has a problem with their performance. Not sure I would vote for him again.

Strength. 100%. Have to show the country that you hold your most nearest and closest family friends accountable. Unconditional love like brothers.....but totally honesty to the American people.
Even best of friends disagree at times. Major fights. Unconditional love and loyalty always though, especially when the chips are down. I pray this is one of those times. They might need to fight like hell, argue, wrestle, etc., outside of media ears, shake hands, a bear hug, and back to making America better than ever before.

AG Sessions made a grave error, but did so with the best of heart and intentions. Had he saw these false accusations and witch hunt coming from his evil former teammates, he might have acted differently. Actually, that was another mistake he made. Not realizing how corrupt swamp creatures would fight to cling to power and corruption.

I am certain that if I was on President Trump's senior staff, I would have been fired "several times" already. It would have been more like a George Steinbrenner / Billy Martin relationship. My work ethic, respect and unwavering loyalty and support could only be surpassed by his remarkable kids.

Mike, please strive to be a trusted friend to the President. Get that drive back you use to have. Talk to both President Trump and AG Sessions about this, in private, outside ALL ears. Be that jerk of a best friend to both of them!!! You darn well know we need 100 more American Patriots like President Trump and AG Sessions to step up and serve! No matter what President Trump decides, I support him, but AG Sessions has too much value and loyalty to lose. I can take the blame for Russia. It was my idea alone. I asked for their help in all honorable ways. We all knew the Obama administration was corrupt at the highest levels and the DNC + mainstream media was colluding with Crooked Hillary. We needed to hear it from a 100% reliable source. Wikileaks really did come through for us. Actual evidence and facts.

    MR PRESIDENT,
TREAT JEFF SESSIONS WITH THE SAME DIGNITY YOU REQUIRE! STOP THE CHILDISH TWEETS AND START SOME SERIOUS PHONE CALLS TO THE BLACK SHEEP RHINOS. MEET PRIVATELY WITH ANY OF YOUR CABINET MEMBERS OR SHUT UP!
I AM A SUPPORTER, BUT ALSO DISGUSTED WITH YOUR JR HIGH SCHOOL TWEETING! MEET PRIVATELY WITH PAUL RYAN AND MITCH MCCONNELL TOO, THEY NEED YOUR PERSUASION AND SUPPORT, IF YOUR AGENDA IS EVER GOING TO HAVE ANY SORT OF A CHANCE IN CONGRESS.
IN REGARD TO AG SESSIONS, MEET PRIVATELY WITH HIM, HEAR HIM OUT & LISTEN CAREFULLY BEFORE YOU SPEAK OR REPLY, HE HAS BEEN ONE OF YOUR MOST CONSISTENT SUPPORTORS AND DESREVES THAT MUCH! I REALLY THINK HE SHOULD FIRE ROBERT MUELLER, APPARENTLY A RINO TOO, AND START CLEANING UP DOJ! ENOUGH CRAP ALREADY!
MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND AMERICA AGAIN & AGAIN!
HOW LONG DO YOU THINK IT WOULD TAKE TO REPLACE HIM, WITH THE DEMOCRATS TOTALLY UNITED AND SOME RINOS HAPPY TO GOUGE YOU IN THE EYE?

I believe Att. Gral. Sessions is an Honorable man and up until now I have not critized Pres,. Trump on anything, for I woted for him & support him fully. I dont agree however the manner in which he keeps trashing AG Sessions, openly and in a humiliating way. Sessions may be a mild manner person not tough enough for AG, but he has shown full loyalty to the Pres., and the Pres, should show respect & the same loyalty towards, the AG. I dont think Trump will find a more loyal person than Sessions, but if Trump considers he was ill served then call the AG aside in private and dismiss him. No need for disrespect. I want Pres. Trump to succeed but Sessions is an ASSET and a big one for the Pres. whether he's mad at him or not. Get things straightened out in private. Dont give the opponents any unnecessary ammo and don't discredit your AG in public!

I think the situation is more complex with President Trump and Jeff Sessions. I wonder, have they sat down and really talked. I have to admit to being unhappy with Mr Sessions. I thought we had a clear conservative, but was not only upset he recused himself, I am also very upset with the Property he seems to think he can take from citizens just because they have been accused of a crime!!!

I must say I am conflicted regarding this issue. No question Sessions is right for the job. That said, his recusal on Russia and his involvement with the Clinton "affair" certainly hampers his ability to be involved in those two issues. During Trump's selection process his advisors knew full well Sessions involvement in those two issues. Certainly, that group contained attorneys who should have seen a red flag regarding these issues and made that information available to Trump. Therefore, Trump and his "vetting" team have some responsibility here. Now, where is Deputy Rob Rosenstein in all this. Can't he go forward with the investigations into Russia and Clinton? Since the recusal of Sessions, doesn't the responsibility for investigating these issues fall to the Deputy? Shouldn't Trump and Rosenstein have some conversation re this?
In light of the above, I believe I would vote to keep Sessions. Start putting pressure on others in the Department and let's get on with the business of the Nation!

Congratulations to Sarah Huckabee Sanders!!! Given the difficult if not impossible task of defending and speaking for the President, she is doing an admirable job. If I could, I would tell all those close to the President that he is losing the support of many of his base by his immature and demeaning actions and Tweets. These latest AG Sessions actions are an example of this. In fact, for me, this is the straw that broke the camel's back. I am embarrassed and ashamed of the childish behavior repeated over and over again!! I can no longer defend him!! So much good is possible if he will just stay positive and focus on the job at hand. I have been hopeful in the past, only to be disappointed again and again. Sigh, enough!! Take the Twitter account away, don't let him say anything without it passing the eye of the PR and communications teams.

  • Christie Chandler

    07/26/2017 05:03 PM

First I want to say how embarrassed we are for AG Sessions!!! The media is NO PLACE to thrash out at your staff!!! We realize Pres Trump has always been an 'off the cuff' person, candid, and says what he feels/thinks! But, this time, he was so unfair to throw Sessions under the bus thru the fake news media that just loves 'stink'! OK HE IS MAD! he made that clear that he was unhappy that Sessions recused himself... that was ENOUGH!! if he felt the need to do more... behind closed doors with Sessions was the time and place! PERIOD!
In our opinion Sessions should NOT have recused himself.... he was giving the opposition their first victory and setting the precedent that they could bully him to do what they wanted! BUT, he did recuse himself! Maybe he should have talked that over with the President and other cabinet members before making that choice! HE DIDNT! but, you just must understand at the time he was under so much pressure to get the position and do some good for this administration he just did what he thought would bring the shortest route to that!! He has worked with all those people up there in Congress for a long time.... he knows how they think... and he knows what he was up against!! There needs to be some trust in Sessions that he knew what he was doing!! I will be the first to admit that sometimes things dont work out, or the person in a position is not the person that needs to be there.... but, Sessions CAN DO THE JOB!! he has held back now because Trump has clipped his tail feathers so short he scared to get out of line or his bottom will be in the cut next time!! and that, dear friend, is no way to have to work... always having to look over your shoulder... always questioning if what he is doing will be next on a news program!!!??!! NOT FAIR!!
Sessions has been busy working on the opiate problem... but that is so OUT OF SIGHT that it seems he is doing nothing!!! he needs to get busy doing the things that we the people can SEE he is doing!! something spectacular to take the main attraction away from 'russia'!!
Just a few of the things we have wondered about and thought maybe would be good ways to please those that support this administration and are FOR SURE NECESSARY!! are:
    1) replace his assist AG!!! 2) new assist AG to STOP THE MUELLER INVESTIGATION! wasting millions of dollars and literally having to LOOK FOR stuff to dig up because there is NO COLLUSION!! 3) begin looking into charges that need to be filed on the uranium deal, the collusion of the hilary campaign, even the email scandal could be readdressed!, the monies that were put into the clinton foundation (pay to play), The tarmac scandal, Loretta Lynch, & the leaks of personal info from fbi recordings to begin with just a "FEW"! any of these would change the direction congress is steering this administration!
If Sessions can pull up the boot straps and GET BUSY then he should stay!!! he had faith in Trump when no one else in DC did!! If he feels Trump has done too much and broke his spirit and he cant move forward with the strength and power he had within... then sadly he should go! But, we wish he would grab a hold of that horn on that bull... and bring 'em all down to the ground~ We continue to pray for our country, The people, our President and administration! and you too Gov Huckabee... as we pray for all those that have a part in changing America!!! Prayer brought us a change in the WH that no one expected... and prayer will carry us thru...

Mr. President, you can't fire AG Jeff Sessions for recusing himself since that's apparently what he should have done, legally and professionally, according to most who should know -- and this should not have been surprising to you. IMHO, you shouldn't be publicly dicing him either; it's so un-presidential and basically wrong at his and your executive level. He was your primary supporter in your time of need for goodness sake. You need to apologize to Jeff Sessions publicly and privately while meeting with him to salve-over any differences and lay plans 'with' him for the future.

  • Brenda Witt

  • George Purvis

    07/26/2017 04:40 PM

Do not fire Jeff Sessions! He is the only and I mean only appointee who is honest. Trump needs to work with his loyal supporters. Trump and his family were not forthcoming with Jeff on their Russian meetings. He should have told Jeff , and then told him not to recuse himself for ethical reasons prior to appointing him. Shame on Trump.

  • Linda Pratt

    07/26/2017 04:16 PM

This has to be a very uncomfortable situation. However, these are things to consider. 1. Has Jeff Sessions been doing a good job. Yes! 2. Is president Trump upset with him. Yes! 3. Should president Trump fire someone every time the pressure gets hot on him and his family. No! 4. Should he have gone to the NYT and mouthed off about Jeff Sessions? No! Go mouth off to Jeff Sessions. That's what the scripture says. I love this president, I support him, and pray for him daily. But you don't fire someone every time you get upset. Relationships take time and they take work. I think he struggles with this and needs honest counsel because it's a character flaw. President Trump fired James Comey and it should have happened. But the way he did it and the timing of it were off. Period. Part of what he's dealing with is the consequence of his knee jerk reactions. He's frustrated, I get it. But if he keeps this up every time the road gets bumpy he's going to wind up at Abba's wood shed. I think God is after something in his heart. It's time he learns something about forgiveness and patience. Grow up already!

  • Sandra Hackworth

    07/26/2017 04:15 PM

I have noticed that since Trump has voiced his disappointment with Sessions, the Dems are taking Sessions' side. They are saying he is a good and honest man---praising him. Now---if Sessions decides to investigate a few Dems, Hillary, Debbie Wasserman Schlutz, Comey, etc., how will the Dems handle that? They are already on record as saying Sessions is a great guy. Will they then turn on Sessions? Trump may be very cagey in making it seem that Sessions is a victim, here. It will be fun to watch this play out.

I agree with Janice Schaefer, also if you bring someone to the party then you need to dance with them. You need to stay away from Twitter, fire your family from the federal government and do the job you asked for... POTUS!

  • Carol Farris

    07/26/2017 03:59 PM

The President should now say he was just testing to see how tough Sessions was and he passed the test.
And then they should come out together and shake hands and life goes on.
Let Sessions figure out a way to fire Moeller.

  • Lisa Lichtman

    07/26/2017 03:48 PM

I believe JS (although his heart was in the right place) should have given POTUS the opportunity to weigh their options and make the final decision. My guess is POTUS would have taken on the fight and not allowed recusal to maintain control. Like so many issues in gov't that are not well thought out. How about JS gets rid of Rothstein. He seems to be on the wrong side of the fence. Also, Isn't there any criteria that has to be met "Prior" to being selected as special council? It feels like the wolf was just let into the hen house and the door left wide open for all the other wolves. Although this special council will most likely never find anything, it's an annoying distraction that the country doesn't need right now or ever for that matter.

There are arguments on both sides of the AG Sessions issue and how effective Sessions can be moving forward after his recusals. But, regardless of what the right answer may be on how to proceed, publicly stabbing AG Sessions in the back in is TOTALLY CLASSLESS. I am personally embarrassed by the President's behavior. Shame on you Donald Trump for how you have publicly treated one of your first and most loyal supporters. If you can so easily turn on your own, then I'm not sure I can trust that you will not turn on me. I'm not inclined to lend my support to someone I'm not sure I can trust or who has the manners of a horses *&%($. Mr Trump, take a good long, hard look, in the mirror ... if you can.

  • Marc Olson

    07/25/2017 07:31 PM

I have been a Trump supporter since the AZ Primary and I continue to be regarding most issues. However, I feel Trump needs to ignore the press and handle Jeff Sessions as an executive should in a private manner... NOT on social media or in the press. Rudy Giuliani and Newt Gingrich have stated the situation correctly.

Sessions needs to step up and call for an investigation of Comey, Clintons, Shummer and several others. I truly can't see anything he is doing to rid our country of real crime.

  • Mary Euler

    07/25/2017 06:22 PM

I hope he will go. Any head of our Country that is the Attorney General should be looking out for the peoples rights including the President's but Session's beliefs are questionable to me. Especially when it was announced that Session's and the Justice Department announced their plans to reinstate the use of asset forfeiture, especially for suspects -- making it easier for local law enforcement to seize cash and property from suspects and reap the proceeds. I don't mind if it is truly a criminal or the person is convicted of a crime but to be able to seize property even from people not charged with a crime is not tolerable as there were too many abuses of this by local, state and federal agencies in the past. It was revamped and made to be applied only to individuals that had actually been convicted of a crime during the Obama years which really surprised me then.

If the person looking out for the people in general believes that this should apply to anyone suspected of anything then I have a problem with them heading up the Justice Department. Trump needs to question him as being a good choice if he is going to violate the individuals right to a fair trial. I would hope Trump would NOT support this as he could find himself losing all his property if this witch hunt of accusations is still going on when this reinterpretation of this law is put in place. In Session's world you are guilty until proven innocent and I'll bet you don't get your property back if you are proven innocent. That makes us a Nazi country. BTW I am NOT a Democrat - just independent and I voted for Trump.
