In yesterday’s evening edition of my newsletter, I featured a particularly astute letter as “Reader Comment of the Day.” Today, because of something that has since made news, I’d like to look at the same letter in a brand new context. In just a matter of hours, it’s become even more timely. First, here’s the letter...

From Scott:

Russia may have lost the Cold War, but they are winning the PRAVDA war. It seems that for the price of a Baltic Cruise, Russia has sown years of discord within the US political system. Fantasies, lies and misinformation fed to voracious Trump haters within the DNC, biased Intelligence agencies and unhinged, corrupt media companies have caused mass division in our Democratic Republic. Putin has gotten a great return on his investment and the left doesn't even see their complicity.

And here’s the answer I gave him yesterday:

You're right, Scott.  (Putin must be falling off his horse laughing.)  One thing I'd add is that after investing some additional $$$, including a cool half-a-million paid personally to Bill Clinton for a couple of speeches, he ended up with 20 percent of America's uranium supply as well.  All in all, Putin must consider that money VERY well spent. Thanks for writing!

As you see, Scott sent us a great comment. But it offers even more food for thought now that Jared Kushner, husband to Ivanka Trump and the President’s son-in-law, has taken some major heat for what he said about the Mueller report and Russian interference in an interview with Brian Bennett of TIME magazine.

“I thought the whole thing was kind of nonsense, to be honest with you,” he said to Bennett, speaking of the special counsel. And good for him, because from what we know and are still learning about the investigation into Trump “colluding” with Russia, “nonsense” is just what it was. In fact, I speculate that most people who’ve had to go before this special counsel might use a, shall we say, cruder term for what it was. The whole thing looks to have been a frame-up by the FBI, based on no real evidence of any crime.

“Now the media spent so much time focusing on it,” he continued, “and quite frankly the whole thing’s just a big distraction for the country.”

Again, it’s hard for a thinking person to disagree. Our country has been thrown into chaos. This is the kind of disruption Putin’s dreams are made of, and we largely did it to ourselves. That’s what Scott was talking about in his letter.

Kushner noted that the $160,000 Russia spent on Facebook ads was what the Trump campaign would spend in just a few hours. He would know. And then he made the statement that caused jaws to drop across Washington, DC, and made the next few hours a breeze for headline-writers, even though he’s right:

“It’s a terrible thing, but I think the investigations and all that speculation that has happened for the last two years has had a much harsher impact on our democracy than a couple of Facebook ads.”

Oh, my stars! Get the smelling salts. Is Jared Kushner daring to say that what RUSSIA RUSSIA RUSSIA did to interfere in our election process had much less effect on our democracy than what was done by Americans here in our own country? Yes, that is what he’s saying. That’s the statement all the news outlets breathlessly picked up.

That was Breitbart.  To compare and contrast, here’s a different take, from Bloomberg News: “Kushner’s portrayal of Russian interference --- ‘they tried to buy some Facebook ads to sow discontent’ --- contrasts with the sophisticated, multi-pronged campaign by the Russian government exposed by Mueller in his 449-page report issued last week. The special counsel detailed how Russia tried to establish contacts with multiple officials working on Trump’s campaign who, in turn, appeared eager to receive the assistance.”

What the Bloomberg story –- like the “449-page report” it purports to detail –- fails to address is that the “sophisticated, multi-pronged campaign” was actually carried out by our own intelligence community, the Hillary Clinton campaign and the Democratic National Committee, in a concerted effort to bring in Russian sources to discredit Donald Trump, first as a candidate and later as the duly elected President of the United States. Yes, there were some Russian efforts, such as trolls who bought Facebook ads. But the real business of affecting Trump’s candidacy through “collusion” started RIGHT HERE in the good old USA, and Trump was not involved.

Just to cite a couple of examples: We absolutely know that Christopher Steele was hired by Fusion GPS to seek out Russian sources for the “dossier,” and that Russian specialist Nellie Ohr was assisting in that effort. Also, it appears more and more likely that even the infamous “Trump Tower” meeting was not initiated by Russians but was set up by Fusion GPS.

Read the Bloomberg version, with its cherry-picked lines from the Mueller report, and the smell of anti-Trump sentiment will come through stronger than anything you’d whiff at Walmart.

Presidential candidate Kirsten Gillibrand went much further, calling what Kushner said “an outrage” and “untenable” in an interview with Andrea Mitchell on (where else?) MSNBC.

“He clearly hasn’t read the report himself,” Gillibrand said. (Note: That seems incredibly unlikely, considering he spent hours cooperating with Mueller’s investigation and IS IN the report.) “But what he said is an outrage,” she continued. “For him to make light of a foreign adversary purposely trying to undermine our elections in untenable...Those statements are highly inappropriate.”

(I would link to the Gillibrand story, but it’s from Newsweek, and right now I don’t feel like going through and correcting the misstatements of fact in it regarding Trump, which I would feel obligated to do if I linked to it. Life is too short.)

If Kushner was “making light” of Russia’s efforts, it was merely to draw a comparison between them and what was (and is) being done by Americans in our own country. The weaponizing of our own FBI for political purposes, the spying on Americans with fraudulently-obtained warrants, the appointment of a special counsel when there was no evidence of any crime, the resulting furor in the media –- these things have certainly had much more effect on our republic than Russians did. And they continue to. Our own intelligence and law enforcement agencies have been compromised at the highest levels. Numerous individuals have been fired or resigned; some are under investigation. Many more NEED to be under investigation. I’d say that’s about as serious as it gets.

Kushner will be getting a lot of grief for his remarks, but he was right to say that a phony investigation that started long before the election –- and that will continue indefinitely, courtesy of Congress –- has caused more damage to our election process than Russia has. Putin made a few judicious investments and ended up winning the lottery, thanks to Americans who don’t care what they do to our country as long as it helps them take down Trump.

I am agreeing 100% with you Governor on both your take on the sham investigation & Jared's summation of the final report. It was a sham & a shame!

I remember as a kid what Kruschev did and said. At the UN he took off his shoe and banged it on the podium. His words to the US were "we will not take you by arms but by your children." And that is why we are in the mess we are in. We have Communists attempting to undermin the USA from within the House. Aided by Muslim allies. We have had Marxists infiltrate and destroy schooling from kindergarten to PhD level. Many no longer love and cherish what we have but have been seduced into following the almighty Benjamin like AOC teaches well how to do it

An excellent article which I’ll be sharing on FB. Jared’s comment, his interview with Time, is right. Instead of looking for facts, certain entities in the US government became a power unto themselves and tried to change events. It’s like living in a fantasy land the last two years!

I get very nervous when a political part in power uses the government (IRS and FBI) to target their opponents. This is an attack on our democracy, and is the starting place for dictators.

As usual Governor, you are spot on the money Sir. I had not thought of this from that perspective, but you and your commentor have opened my eyes to another view. Love reading your articles and commentary. Thank you Sir

    Dear Governor Huckabee,
I commented earlier on a different topic, but I saw a comment by Carol Guise (think that is correct) and must say that I totally agree with her comments about this country being so divided. This current time in our history is far worse than what we saw during the Vietnam era. With reference to her comment, the quote that comes to my mind that we were taught in our era is: "A house divided against itself, will fall."

However, I also have great hope. I believe President Trump, Jared Kushner and others (like you) are gifts to America. Because (although various translations exist), the Bible also clearly states that God
"Will bless those who bless My people Israel and curse those who curse My people Israel."
........ own feeling....I realize that "Trump" was not the original family name (there are many of us whose surnames are not original--due to our ancestors coming to this country having their names changed by officials at Ellis Island).
HOWEVER...."What's in a name?" Well-- I also take comfort in that the word "trump" is originally derived from the word "triumph". President Trump did not have to run for President....but he did. Why? Because he loves America and all that for which it stands. And...he actually almost stands alone...against the mainstream media...and the continuous rhetoric and accusations by the Left. How he has even accomplished what he has is amazing!
I just wish members of Congress would get busy and seriously work on issues that truly work for the good of the American people and our democratic constitutional republic.
Thank you for your columns and may God bless you and yours...and God bless the United States of America!

Regarding Hillary question is simply this:
Exactly WHY would Putin (and Russia) scheme and take actions to HELP Donald Trump (a person largely unknown to them...but a strong personality and one who clearly seemed to "put America first") win the 2016 election???
After all, Putin clearly ALREADY had Hillary in "his back pocket" due to the Clinton (and Obama) involvement in the Uranium One fiasco (among other things).
It is my contention that Hillary did not destroy her illegal communication equipment because she was afraid of them being found to contain American Top Secret information, or to protect President Obama, or any other selfless reason....but because within those devices there was evidence that SHE was the one working with the Russians. step further.....that the few "Russian internet trolls" who seemingly tried to "help" the Trump a "FALSE FLAG OP"...carried out by Hillary herself! Perhaps THAT is the real reason for the destruction of her server and other equipment.
Personally believe one could posit that there is a valid reason to suspect this...considering all the other evidence of corruption that HAS been uncovered (Fusion GPS, the "Steele" dossier, etc...).

I remember back in the 50's Kruchev said that Russia would not need to attack the US, that it would destroy itself from within. Seems he could see the future cause the DemonRATs are doing an excellent job of tearing the country apart!

I'd like to know how the Dems think they will fare after 2020 if they were to be successful in ousting Trump. Do they think they would get treated any different or better than the rest of the US citizens if they are able to deliver the masses of our country into the hands of the new world order leaders? I can't see where they would be of any further use to those leaders. Clearly, those leaders would quickly realize just how unintelligent the Dems really are.

I grew up with a comment made by a Russian President resounding frequently coming to mind as different events happened. The United States does not have to be defeated, it will fall into our hands like an overripe apple. When Russia fell, I thought so there is your apple. As long as we stand together, not much can defeat us. Though my patriotic heart was tested through the years, the country always came first with its citizens. The rot came slowly over the years and then a tiny wedge became an opening for our country to be divided and very ineffective when it came to staying together against a common enemy. Nowadays we do not even recognize the enemy since he lives among us. The Bible backs our Presidents even if we do not like him. Eight years in my household the television was turned off when he appeared but I never spoke against him. The respect for the office is gone now. The internet has made it easier to invade our country. When did we begin to believe disrespect for our leader and our country is not just o.k. but justified?

An astute observer in my office suggested that Putin's gambit in our election was actually an attempt to throw suspicion or to discredit the entire US election process. Putin did apparently succeed by intervening (even though it was really a minor effort which had nothing to do with the Presidential race results in 2016) and by triggering the scorn of the Democratic party over the electoral results. The Democrats fell right into that trap by abandoning all caution over their hatred of Trump. Too bad President Obama did little to heed the Intelligence Community's warnings, as most of this could potentially have been prevented.

Thanks for your current events commentary. It’s so sad to see the collusion of the democrats and left wing media continue rather than admit they were wrong. I only hope Barr gets to the bottom of all the corruption at FBI and others and that they are prosecuted so this doesn’t happen again in the future. Even if there are no convictions - the truth needs to come out and exposed!

I believe the American people are getting fed up with the political drama from both Democrats and Republicans. The 2020 candidates only speak the anti Trump rhetoric and talking points, that they offer no viable solutions to the pressing issues. Republicans are also wrapped up in the deep state activities, that they too are not talking about solutions. The only person who IS talking about solutions and acting upon them (as best as he can) is President Trump. I'm not seeing a whole lot of the Republican party standing behind the President. D.C. lobbyists are running or should I say ruining our country.

i want these people, hitlery and the rest, in jail. i want the dismantling of the deep state. i want the convention of states to return power to the states. i want the original constitution restored. for example, i want the election of senate restored to the states representatives. i want the irs abolished. i want the borders closed and sealed and armed troops enforcing "no trespass" signs. i want reparations. the feds stole half my inheritance (already taxed) as it was double taxation. in short, there is no justice in the country. i do not expect to get anything i mentioned. my inheritance is waiting for me in the world to come. this world is passing away.

I can't believe this is actually America. It's frightening to imagine the trouble one can get into by trying to do things the old American way. We are overrun by desperately wicked people. Hatred is spreading on account of crooked politicians, Hollywood, and the media getting completely out of hand. I have to admit to having angry feelings toward those who are ruining our country. The Lord God who blessed this country above all others is hated ,and destroyed by the most wicked people who want to change it.
I surely can't see any light concerning the future of our country, and it's frightening to think of living here if God doesn't intervene.
How precious are those who are still trying to carry on in an honorable way, and trying to make America great again.
We need to fear God once more, and He might bless, or He might not. He's God, and He's in charge whether anybody believes it or not.

Two men are talking in a bar about robbing a nearby bank. They make some plans, but then never actually do anything.
Are they guilty of breaking any law?
You can see the parallel with some current events.

The truest and worst enemy of not just a country but any single person on this planet, is the one that is standing right next to you.
The one who is making any sort of unsupported, unsubstantiated or even verifiable claim of their statement. For to NOT be able to prove that their statement(s) are true or valid, should make them at the very least questioned(able).
Also, having said person(s) that are making said claims being to have profited in ANY fashion from what they have or are stating makes it even more questionable of their claim. All one should look at to show a true example of this is either the Blasey or Avenatti cases that took place. These people profited not just in the way of financial ways but also with notoriety. It therefore should have caused more scrutiny of what they were making as statements.
The media whom are or have ALWAYS been portrayed most especially by themselves as the ones whose job it is to ask those questions but also to seek out the real truth. The problem with all of this is that the media have NOT been doing any of this aspect of their job. While there have been a few, (very few in actual fact), who have been trying to get to the truth. Now we can't exactly say for how many years they have NOT been seeking the REAL truth. It has however, become more evident in the past couple of years that they are NOT doing this work of asking the tough questions. As well as NOT holding people accountable for what they are swearing is the truth. They are also NOT doing the hard part of the job of real investigation into finding out if in fact, the person making the statements is either receiving any form of benefits or if in fact making true accusations and statements.
The other side of the fact regarding the media, is that those who have been trying to not just determine the real truth but also report it. Have in fact been stopped, discredited, hog tied or down right ambushed by their own fellow media.
History will eventually show that ALL of this (Russian) narrative will fall NOT so much on the political side but to lay at the steps of the Media. They will be the ones who will be eventually shown to have ALLOWED the (Russian) narrative to destroy the country from within!! For NOT upholding that part they have held out in front in ALL of the history of the USA. That being the 1st amendment of the constitution which has been held out by them as freedom of the press.

I have to agree with Jared Kushner. Nothing, since the Civil War, has damaged our nation as much as the rabid, partisan vitriol that has weaponized the institutions created to serve and protect our citizens. Sadly, the Democrats' out-of-control hatred for President Trump shows no signs of abating, and can only end badly. The battle lines are drawn, and hearts are being exposed. Only God can change this landscape.

I totally agree with what Jared Kushner stated. Democrats in Congress have refused to accept the fact that President Trump is indeed our president. In their long drawn out pout they are willing to sacrifice money and time on destroying our country’s reputation rather than giving a tad of support for the policies that are needed and expected from elected officials . I am so thrilled that after many years , I changed my political registration to Republican. I can’t, in good conscience , vote for a party steeped in such pathetic retaliation attempts and so lacking in values.

    Dear Governor Huckabee,

First of all, I truly appreciate your succinctness and plainly stated synopses of the various “goings-on” and shenanigans in our country. You’re a joy to read and would have made a terrific president.

Consider the following explanation as to why the collective left wails on and on ad infinitum with their incredibly nonsensical rants against the Bad Trump and “unwoke” conservatives: Trump got elected, an absolutely unimaginable (to the left) outcome in 2018, the Left is utterly outraged and dumbfounded, and, since 2018 is inexplicable to them, they feel absolutely logical in sputtering their countless rants and diatribes of illogical, unfounded, hypocrisy laden tales, theories and vituperative (haven’t used that word since grade school vocabulary lessons).

    Best Regards,

I often recall my junior and senior high school days in the early 1960's. (I'm now 72) We were taught about Communism and how it could infiltrate our country from within. USA could be defeated not by war, but through gradually changing our system and through brainwashing the public. I have lived to see it beginning to happen before my eyes, but thankfully there are enough people (like you) who are wise enough to realize what is happening and to speak out, keep us informed, and fight to keep our country "great." Thank you!

I agree. The worst thing that has happened to election process was not a few Russian Facebook comments (which I received and realized they were from Russians), but from anti Americans from Media who continually denigrated Trump candidacy

  • Jerry Korba

    04/24/2019 01:09 PM

Kushner is correct in his statement `the main stream media and anti american left are the advocates of chaos division of this country and to put our problems on hold for 2 reasons 1. To put US citizens at a disadvantage to exercise our freedoms 2 To control what freedoms we shall have. Russia as I have commented before has spent very little to accomplish this and the media and the left have spent millions if not billions, 35 million on this fake investigation was just the tip of the iceberg. Mike your readers and writers and Kushner understand what's going on here we have a little say in this mess by voting we better up our prayer game to go along with our vote. The media makes sure all of the nonsense gets out to the public while the good things our president has delivered stays buried.
