There was a recent controversy that the media tried very hard to ignore, over Democratic politicians arguing that doctors should not have to provide medical care to babies born alive during “botched” abortions (a “botched abortion” is a medical procedure in which, despite the doctor’s best efforts, the patient survives.) There were several outlandish excuses offered for not providing the newborn the same basic right to emergency medical care that’s guaranteed by law to everyone in America, such as claiming that it somehow infringed on the mother’s right to control her own body (even though her body was now completely separate from her child’s.)
When those arguments failed to persuade anyone with a functioning brain or heart, another was floated: that the whole debate was just a pointless distraction because babies being born alive during abortions “never happens.” Why the whole scenario was nothing but a rightwing fantasy. Turns out that was a botched attempt to abort the truth.
Fox News examined records from just three states - Arizona, Florida and Minnesota – and estimates that since 2016, at least 40 babies were born alive after failed abortions. Meanwhile, the CDC investigated 588 infant deaths between 2003 and 2014, and it estimates that at least 143 were deaths of babies that were born alive during abortions. Because of gaps in the records and differing record requirements in each state, the post-abortion death toll could be significantly higher.
So far in 2019, there have been 112 people killed in mass shootings. “Progressives” call that an intolerable death toll and are demanding to rewrite the Constitution to try to end it. Meanwhile, their reaction to the deliberate withholding of medical care to born-alive babies until they die – resulting in, at a bare minimum, at least 143 deaths of children since 2003 – is silence and denial.
I really don’t want to hear another word out of them about “coldhearted” Republicans who don’t care about protecting innocent children.
