Could it be that President Trump’s hard line on North Korea has finally convinced China to take the threat seriously? Having already ordered Chinese banks to cut business with North Korea, Beijing just gave most North Korean businesses 120 days to shut down their operations in China and end joint ventures with Chinese businesses.
Whether this will convince Kim Jong Un to stop acting like a belligerent drunk with a Napoleon complex remains to be seen. He doesn’t seem to care about most UN sanctions, since they obviously aren’t forcing him to go hungry. But ties to China are the major lifeline for his isolated regime, and if China is finally getting serious about cutting him off, that’s like someone stepping on a deep sea diver’s air hose.
Something had to be done because so far, nothing has knocked any sense into Kim, as he continues to escalate both his nuclear and missile programs and his over-the-top rhetoric. This week, his state media claimed that 4.7 million North Koreans have volunteered to join or reenlist in the military since Kim started threatening to go to war with America. It’s unclear whether they really want to fight America or just want the MRE’s. Or maybe they just want to invade any other country, so long as they won’t be in North Korea anymore.
