The Trump Administration’s decision to include a question about being a US citizen in the 2020 Census is being denounced by liberals, especially those from blue states with large numbers of illegal immigrants. Nancy Pelosi, who developed a sudden respect for the Constitution and the separation of powers right around January 20th, 2017 called it “unconstitutional,” while DNC head Tom Perez, with his typical restraint and understatement, dubbed the question “a craven attack on our democracy and a transparent attempt to intimidate immigrant communities.”

Which seems a bit hyperbolic, considering they didn’t raise a peep when Bill Clinton’s Census asked the same question in 2000. For those who don’t believe it, here’s a screen capture of the actual form:

Commentary continues below advertisement

This is being painted as an attack on immigrants, which it isn’t; it’s an attempt to find out how many people are living here illegally ("immigrants" are here legally.) The less-fevered excuse being given for opposing it is that Washington might cut off federal funding for all those millions of non-citizens that Governors like Jerry Brown have happily waved across the border. Since courts have ruled that illegal immigrants can’t be denied schooling or medical care, that’s not likely.

When you blow away all the rhetorical fog, the real concern is that if it’s determined that a state’s population number that’s used to apportion Congressional Representation is heavily inflated with millions of non-citizens, that state will lose seats, and hence, power in Congress. Which it should, because contrary to the fervent efforts of politicians in places like California, non-citizens, particularly illegal non-citizens, are not allowed to vote or hold office and shouldn’t be wielding power in Congress over US citizens.

VOTE IN OUR POLL:  President Trump added a citizenship question to the 2020 census. Critics say it will dilute political representation in Congress and they are now suing the federal government. Do you support including the question? VOTE HERE

In other words, Mr. Perez isn’t really so concerned about a “craven attack on our democracy” as he is that someone is trying to turn back his own side’s craven attack on our democracy. This is why people say that if you want to know what the left is really doing, look at what it’s accusing its opponents of doing.

Are you a citizen? We probably have citizens who do not even know they are citizens. One of the big complaints about the Census is the number of people hiding from it - from back when "illegals" were a rarity and a non-issue.
Back to the present, though, if someone is illegally in this country, then that is what they intended; if they are "Dreamers", they are too lazy and stupid to go through the drill to become a citizen (not nearly as hard as college once was anyway); they are the ones who will refuse to be interviewed. We need to tie Govt. benefits to the Census - don't comply with the Census, then no special ID card that will be required going forward to get free food, housing, cellphones, education, and God knows what else this country hands out.

I wonder how the Democratic party would feel if any illigal Russian's in America could/would vote... They certainly want the illegal Latinos to vote... Talking about hypocrisy with the left. If it's a Russian it would be a big Hell No, but not so much for any illegal ... Latino.... so typical

I'm glad you pointed out that question had been on previous census questionnaires. I was sure I had answered it before. I Hate to point this out to those Senators & Congressmen who are so upset about this; their job is to represent U.S. citizens, not illegal aliens, who are citizens of another country.

Then President Obama in 2010 removed the question during his term in office just so he could get more
Hispanic votes, I say put the question on our census and be done with it.

I wonder how long it will be before someone on the Left compares illegal 'citizens' not being counted in the census to slaves being counted as only 3/5th of a person.

It's the same old Democrat talking point of the decades. If you say it long enough and if there are 1,000 of same minded people saying it long enough with you, then the American Public WILL BELIEVE IT. We need to get this statement out on the internet because there are youth, legal immigrants and people who have never heard this before. It would be a revelation to them.

It seems to me that the citizenship question has been on most of the census forms that I have filled out for more than 50 years. It is just lately that this question has raised questions. My Grand Mother came to this country as a resident alien from Canada. She proudly answered this question on the census forms as well as took a trip to the post office yearly to renew her registered alien status. Why don't more of these illegals do this? Just sayin' Mikie: I am not a robot but a respectful Arkansan if there is such a thing anymore.

democratic hypocracy is amazing isn't it.? Bill Clinton can do anything he wants and it's fine. But let a conservative do the same thing and they get all up in arms. I think we should as conservatives do what they do and then throw it back in their face. The census, which I worked in in 2000, is to find out how many citizens we have and how many non-citizens if I understand it right. Since the representation in the US house is based in population. Don't dems want that? Really? Are they ashamed to admit there are too many non-citizens in the US, Especially in CA?

I'll remind you that we are talking about attacks on our republic not an attack on our democracy. Democrat keep talking about our democracy while trying to undermine the rule of law and diminish the protections of this great republic of ours. Democracy is mob rule without the constraints of the constitution.

Soon, if we continue to allow illegal immigrants to be illegally in our Country, vote, run for office or even get into the White House, we are only enabling them and hurting ourselves. Oh my, I just realized what I said and we have already done that with Obama!

From what I could find, there has been a citizenship question starting 1820. Except when it was omitted with obama's administration. I'm betting you are correct why liberals don't want data collection. There is data collection about deaths, tracking the method of death. There is data collection by CDC about number of cases of various illness, and where the people live. Just to name a few things that have and use data collection. The liberals' reason probably is much the same as why they don't want voter ID--it may be found that the number of non-eligible people are voting in our elections is much greater than suggested.

Appreciate all of your posts and articles about the state of our republic. Would love to sit down and have an honest conversation on what I can do in my own state to help out and possibly serve my country. Thank you Mike for all of your honesty.

I agree the question should be added...We should know how many are here. The Democrats in California are actually hiring illegals in government positions this should NEVER happen...This is insanity what the democrats are doing to this country!! Someone needs to hold them accountable this lawlessness needs to end!

What I have said for years. To know what liberals are really doing, listen to what they say, then look at the opposite. They believe in the exact opposite of what the claim.

"Are you an immigrant" is every bit as legitimate to ask on an American Census as any other question. If my Dr. is required to ask me if I smoke, drink alcohol, use illegal drugs, AND How Much - & then report it to the insurance company for Federal Compliance Mandates, then I guess the everybody better get their definition of "discrimination", or whatever they're calling it, made more consistent.
