Proving the old saw that “A fool and his money are soon parted,” there’s a GoFundMe account for the legal defense of fired former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe. This despite the fact that McCabe has not yet even been indicted for anything, and knowing how the denizens of the DC swamp usually evade responsibility for betraying the public trust, it’s questionable that he ever will be.
It’s pretty obvious that he’s drawing donations from the kind of people who would fund anything with a whiff of anti-Trumpism about it, no matter how badly it reeks from other rotten elements. In McCabe’s case, he was not unjustly fired by Trump. He was fired by the Attorney General on the recommendation of his own agency’s Office of Professional Responsibility, based on an in-depth investigation by the FBI Inspector General, involving detailed records and interviews with the principals and fellow FBI employees. It found that McCabe leaked FBI information to the media and lied to investigators four times.
On top of that, his GoFundMe page may not be the “grassroots” campaign it claims to be. At the link, the Law & Crime blog recounts how the uber-liberal site Slate.com traced it back to a top Washington PR firm. A writer at Slate claims that the firm was founded by Andrew McCabe’s lawyers and is now promoting a small donor fundraiser to pay…Andrew McCabe’s lawyers. And it’s already raised over $550,000 (please refer back to the first sentence of this post.) More details and vague responses are at the link.
Look, it’s your money, and you’re perfectly free to throw it away any way you want. But just because someone is an anti-Trump partisan and you are, too, that doesn’t mean they deserve your money, any more than a bogus charity claiming to represent Christianity is deserving of support from Christians. There are countless GoFundMe pages worthy of support, from families crushed by medical bills to shelters trying to help homeless veterans or abused animals. There’s something to touch the sympathies of anyone with a heart. Of all the people who deserve your generosity, a former Deep State dweller fired for betraying the public trust and his expensive Washington law firm should rank somewhere below that guy who sent you an email claiming to be a Nigerian prince.
