A Big Mistake Christians Make in Politics

November 17, 2019

I’m a follower of Jesus and though I am far from perfect on that path, I truly am grateful for the grace of God in my life.  I’ve also been in the political arena for almost 30 years and I get questioned or even challenged often about reconciling living in the kingdom of God with living in the rough, sometimes savage world of the kingdom of politics & government.  Sometimes, the questions are honest and simple, such as “how can you be a Christian and engage in something as mean and vicious as politics?”  And then there are the people who usually admit they aren’t even believers, but who blast me on social media platforms like Twitter and seek to shame me by saying something I’ve said or done “isn’t very Christian.”

Well, determining something to be Christian or not isn’t the responsibility of some Twitter troll who believes they rattle me by questioning the authenticity of my faith.  Sorry, Charlie, but you’re fishing in the Dead Sea!   God knows me inside and out and is uniquely qualified to rebuke me, correct me, or even discipline me.  The petty and often petulant grievances of some twit typing out his tantrums while sitting in his Snoopy pajamas in his Mama’s basement doesn’t disturb me.  God gets my attention.  The angry, irrational bile coming from someone hiding behind a juvenile “internet name” doesn’t cause me to curl up in a fetal position and meow like a house-cat set outside in the cold.

And for those who think Christians in politics shouldn’t fight back and should be sweet, smiling, and sugary, let me explain something.  If a Christian plays in the NFL, he hits people.  Hard.  He tackles, he blocks, he runs over people.  If he doesn’t, he won’t even start on a junior high team, much less make it to the NFL.  Because in the arena of football, it’s just a rough game.  If a Christian plays in the NBA, he will fight for every rebound, use his elbows to keep the ball, and run over people in the lane to get the shot, because in the arena of basketball, that’s how it’s played.

And in the game of politics, there are no prizes for 2nd place; everyone does NOT get a trophy, and you have to play hard and fight hard because the issues matter.  Sure, you play within the rules and you don’t cheat, lie, or hit below the belt.  But the football player unwilling to hit hard won’t be in the game long.  And the candidate who doesn’t fight for every inch of turf doesn’t belong in the game, because like it or not, that’s the arena in which we play.

One doesn’t have to be unnecessarily rough, mean, or vicious, but don’t play politics if you can’t stand to see your own blood, or can’t accept being hit from behind.  It’s a full contact sport played without pads.  Not for the faint of heart.  The Christian in the NFL or NBA plays hard and plays to win, but hopefully plays ethically.  The Christian in politics shouldn’t lie, steal, or cheat, but can’t pretend the game is without conflict and contact.

Taking a stand for the sanctity of life, for Biblical marriage, or for the treatment of the poor may take some tough tactics.  Doesn’t mean you aren’t a Christian if you play for keeps.  It means you aren’t much of a Christian if the outcome means so little to you that you’d rather be popular with your opponents than to win the issues.

But wasn’t Jesus nice?  Of course, but he also called his opponents snakes a vipers and even turned over tables in the Temple to protest exploitation of gullible people.  It’s okay to hate politics, but it’s not okay to pretend you’re in the game when you don’t have the courage to play to win.

I can only add a 'Big AMEN'. Mr. Huckabee, you said it well. Sir, I hope you will excuse me adding my research on this matter, but this is what I stand on. Nothing else! I used to just list where the verse is found, but I have also found that not many will look it up, so I now list not only where the verse is found, but the very scripture itself. - Dennis Zinke

    Matthew 24:35.
Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.

    Mark 8:38.
For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him the Son of Man also will be ashamed when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels."

    Mark 13:31.
Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.

    Luke 9:26.
For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words, of him the Son of Man will be ashamed when He comes in His own glory, and in His Father's, and of the holy angels.

    Luke 21:33.
Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.

    John 5:47.
But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?"

    John 12:47.
And if anyone hears My words and does not believe, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world but to save the world.

    John 12:48.
He who rejects Me, and does not receive My words, has that which judges him— the word that I have spoken will judge him in the last day.

    John 14:24.
He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and the word which you hear is not Mine but the Father's who sent Me.

    John 15:7.
If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you.

    Acts 2:14.
But Peter, standing up with the eleven, raised his voice and said to them, "Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and heed my words.

Galatians 1:6-12 I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him who called you in the grace of Christ, to a different gospel, 7. which is not another; but there are some who trouble you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ. 8. But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed. 9. As we have said before, so now I say again, if anyone preaches any other gospel to you than what you have received, let him be accursed. 10. For do I now persuade men, or God? Or do I seek to please men? For if I still pleased men, I would not be a bondservant of Christ. 11. But I make known to you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached by me is not according to man. 12. For I neither received it from man, nor was I taught it, but it came through the revelation of Jesus Christ.

PUTTING ON THE WHOLE ARMOUR OF GOD
    Ephesians 6:10-24
Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. 11. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. 13. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. 14. Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15. and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16. above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. 17. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; 18. praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints— 19. and for me, that utterance may be given to me, that I may open my mouth boldly to make known the mystery of the gospel, 20. for which I am an ambassador in chains; that in it I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak. 21. But that you also may know my affairs and how I am doing, Tychicus, a beloved brother and faithful minister in the Lord, will make all things known to you; 22. whom I have sent to you for this very purpose, that you may know our affairs, and that he may comfort your hearts. 23. Peace to the brethren, and love with faith, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 24. Grace be with all those who love our Lord Jesus Christ in sincerity. Amen.

We must speak up. If we care about the future
of the Republic silence is no longer an option.
We are now living in the Ostrich Society where
the secular trinity rules - me, myself & I.

God is deeply concerned about our political views! Politics are all about policies essential for governing. There are only two ways to govern - “with God” or “against God”. Jesus said, he that is not with Me is against Me. Policies are also essential in leading and managing marriages, families, businesses, schools, and churches! With God or Against God! Think about it!

This is to apropos. After reading your newsletters of late, I thought that maybe some were just too cynical and others addressed some of your opponents with name-calling I found inappropriate. Yes! I am a believer and I very much appreciate your stance for us in the "political arena." However, I think you can cross the line of dignity. We are to speak the truth in Love. Yes, Love. Love our enemies.

I'll think of you as Mike and not governor in my comment because I have very fond memories of my vacation in Israel under your guidance a few years back. I think of you like a little bro, cause I'm pretty sure I'm older than you. You are truly a leader in the Christian walk in life and preach by example, even in the political arena. You have such a unique way with words that make me smile when you describe and compare the behaviors of critics. I figure Jesus did that also. Of course you are right on in your comments and match my beliefs perfectly. Love you brother.

Mike , I say well said, and agree totally, We know there will be attacks on us as Christians If we are not willing to stand strong, who will be here in this world to uphold the Kingdom..People choose the most ridiculous things to condemn and or criticize...And completely over look the heart of the matter, even as President Trump who doing Kingdom business very well.."Praise the Lord" People do not seem to care at all about all that has been accomplished for our good, they just seem to want to believe the lies.. Thank you sir for standing strong..being bold...and for giving to the Lord..in warmest regards, Mary Max Olander

In fact, he was so "not nice," that the leaders of the day ended up killing him for not playing nice.

The founding fathers were absolutely positive, spot on, when they insured the separation of church and state in our government. It’s up to the individual what they feel in their lives and heart when they make a decision that will affect millions of people. No matter what anyone thinks,God will have the last word about everything. It’s a delicate balance between doing everything for everyone and doing it in a way that doesn’t step on someone’s other beliefs. We have had the absolutely best possible government ever invented by anyone yet, but it’s being run by some of the worst people ever these days and the common sense of what was is being replaced by greed and corruption. Once we started kicking God out of the country we saw Him getting angry and if we continue down that road it’s not going to end well for us all!

Thank you, Mike, you give us the courage to continue. I also read your readers’ comments and I am so relieved to discover I am not alone. NY can be a very lonely place for a Christian. To those who worry about Trump’s morals, I can only point out that if you were a soldier going into battle, would you be more concerned with your general’s personal life or with his ability to win the conflict and get you out with your life? Think about it. Pray on it. Because I assure you, this country is in an apocalyptic struggle for its existence at this moment. God bless you all.

Another excellent article...so well said and so true. The internet has its good points but it also opens the door to people who make hateful & untrue remarks about others. Those people are blinded by the deceiver.
So glad you are up front about your faith in God & Jesus. In a world where Christianity is now being left out of schools & our country...we need MORE Christians in politics speaking the truth. So thankful you are both a Christian and involved in politics also.
You are being a light in a nation that seems to be leaning more towards the dark each passing year. We need you to be involved...you help give guidance to what is right.

Thank you for being a light in the wilderness. I am currently horrified that Chick-Fil-A has cut
funding to the Federation of Christian Athletes where my son works. I remember gathering up friends and family to support them when the Gay community called for picketing and a boycott a few years back. Now they say their contracts were "up" with SALVATION ARMY and FCA, so that makes it okay that they are deserting these long standing Christian groups. We need more than ever before, young people to go to the high schools and gather together Christian kids to be witnesses in their evil and secular environment. My girlfriends daughter in junior high school said it's "cool" to be bi-sexual now too. Lord God, please help us down here! We all need to pray for His light to shine on this darkness that is invading our country.
