Trump defends NFL comments

September 25, 2017

As for whether President Trump should have swatted the NFL hornet’s next, particularly with the blunt language he used, then doubled down on Twitter: personally, I may wish he would stick to more important issues, but he’s made it clear that he speaks his mind, and it’s like the NFL: if you hit him, he’ll hit you back.

If the team owners could just cool their jets for a minute, they might realize that it takes both sides to escalate a fight, and the left is playing them for suckers. It’s the goal of the “progressive” movement to politicize everything (they even have a slogan: “No escapism!”) They are consumed with dividing Americans into warring camps as a way to tear down all American institutions, and they want to make sure there is no place to escape having radical politics shoved into their faces. Recently, they’ve scored a string of successes. They’ve managed to infest with leftist political messages all of the following: network and cable news programs, movies, live theater, late night comedy shows, college classes and lectures, ESPN, newspapers, news weeklies, entertainment and fashion magazines, virtually every televised awards show and more.

And what else do all these newly “woke” organizations have in common? They are all in a popularity death spiral. The anti-Trump Emmy Awards just set a new record for low viewership. Network newscasts and newspapers are dying, colleges that tolerate violent protests are shuttering dorms for lack of students, Newsweek recently sold for the princely sum of one buck while Jann Wenner is desperately trying to unload Rolling Stone, movie box office is cratering, and Stephen Colbert’s crown as “king of late night” is based on an audience a fraction of the size of an off night for Johnny Carson. Why in the world would pro sports leagues want to hop onto the treadmill to oblivion with them?

Ratings and ticket sales for the NFL were already on the decline. The best way to accelerate that trend is by siding with the shrill leftist-politics-in-your-face-24/7 mob. The teams may think they’re sticking it to Trump, but Trump was just expressing the long-simmering frustrations of the 60-million-plus Americans who voted for him, who represent a disproportionate percentage of NFL fans.

If the players could just set aside their animosity toward Trump, they might realize that this is coming across to many fans not as a protest of injustice but as nose-thumbing at their own fans who believe that sports should be a no-politics zone, and that the flag and the National Anthem are symbols of something larger than politics. We take that brief moment of silent, standing respect to come together and express our gratitude that we live in a nation where we have the freedom to disagree, argue, protest and speak out without fear of reprisal from the government – after the game is over. When you violate that shared covenant, you are showing contempt for the very system that guarantees the rights you claim to be exercising.

Both the players and owners should remember that fans have freedoms, too. Many used their freedom of speech on Sunday to boo players who kneeled during the National Anthem. Those at home may exercise their freedom to switch channels or even to turn off the TV entirely to go outside and toss around a football with their families. As the story at the link notes, a Yahoo Sports poll found that only 30% of Americans support the player protests. How many of those are even football fans? Do you think those who are fans will never get sick of having leftwing politics shoved down their throats and the country they love insulted and just tune out, especially now that the disrespect for America is on steroids? Then check out the summer movie box office figures.

Demonstrations as you stated, are more appropriate off the field of play. However, a demonstration before the anthem if the players all stand during the anthem I can live with.

I'm sorry Donald, but I Have to disagree on this issue. These people DO know exactly what they are doing and that is trying to Destroy America. That has been their objective since long before that Traitors first election. I'm sorry to say that I believe they have already won because we don't have enough people with the "gonads" to stand up and fight them face to face because they're afraid they might get stabbed in the back. If that's all we've got. We deserve to lose

Maybe its time to put our money where our mouth is and everyone who has season tickets take one Sunday and stay away from the ballpark. It would only take one event like this before the NFL and the players would get the message!

I was really upset when leftists started tearing down historical statues from the Civil War. It was almost surreal to me, like were they trying to change history, or to make it more pleasant because the statues were gone?
So now I'm totally disgusted as well, with the unbelievable display of further disrespect for our country's history, and our American Flag and our National Anthem. What is up with that? Is that going to happen every time that NFL players are in objection to something that has happened to their disapproval on some other subject in America? Where does it stop? If not now, then when?
Shame on you, NFL players who disgraced our country and Flag and National Anthem! Please do not do that again!!!!

    Well said Mike.
I agree the President should have left this issue alone but I also agree that Im tired of the NFL players protest. My family personally quit watching football last year. I don't plan on ever returning as a viewer. This all does help me realize Im not the only one who is mad and has quit supporting the NFL.

First, I'd like to remind the NFL (and others) that the left-leaning crybabies are not consumers. For the most part, this minority are a loud-mouthed, free-loading, cheap-skates bunch. They don't buy $100+ tickets or premium channels. Everybody is kowtowing to a bunch of losers who don't even buy their products. The people who buy, with real money, are being pissed on. Big mistake.

Second, is this all about the first amendment? If so, am I to believe that you can say/do anything when protesting and be protected by it? Or are you just allowed to use it as protection when it best serves your purpose? That's an important question. For example, you can't say the word "nigger" anymore. It offends others correct? If you're not allowed to offend others then NFL/NBA players can't kneel on the field for the national anthem as it offends me, deeply. Many have died, including blacks, in wars around the world to protect that flag.

Third, there is a rule in the NFL that reads (in sum and substance), "...that all participants will be on the field, standing, for the national anthem". Well, I guess entitled crybabies can make their own rules any time they want. Their defense? The all-encompassing, all-engrossing, omni-present defense....racism.

Forth, I'm applying for work and I'm tired of having to answer on each application whether or not I'm black. MLK said, "don't judge me by the color of my skin but by the content of my character". So long to that concept. Now you must FIRST judge me by my color and, by the way, to hell with my character.

Fifth, JFK said, "ask not what this country can do for you but what you can do for this country". To hell with that too. Crybabies unite. Give me all you can for free. I'm entitled. This is the new gospel according to Comrade Obama. A league of entitled crybabies.

Sixth, Churchill said, "Socialism is the philosophy of failure, its creed is ignorance, its gospel envy. The only inherent virtue in it is the equal sharing of misery". Ludwig Von Mices has written at length about socialism and how it is doomed to failure each and every time. And, still, there are those greedy, ignorant few who insist it can work. Because they trust that Soros, Obama, Clinton, Rothschild, Rockefeller, Chaney and so on will not work to still cream from the top. Talk about trickle down economics.

Keep up the great work Mr. Huckabee. You have my total respect. You are a brave man. And your daughter is doing an outstanding job too.

I agree 100%. Most americans actually see their "protests" as a complete disrespect for our servicemen and women and others that have fought to make sure they have the freedom to even play the game. I could understand if they were actually doing something to help change what they are protesting but to disrespect our flag and anthem is not the way to do it. They are disrespecting america and the average American.

Honoring our American flag and National Anthem have nothing to do with teams, players, or games. It is to honor our COUNTRY that was established to provide us with liberty and freedom in our thoughts, words, and deeds, and also religious freedom. Many wonderful citizens, including some of our fabulous forefathers who set us up, have lost their lives in protecting our nation and its citizens. We should be ashamed to carry on such foolishness, and we need to stop this and get ourselves and our wonderful country back on track!!!
