Transgender inmates in NYC

April 19, 2018 |

It’s become a recurring theme here of pointing out the many ways in which the “progressive,” SJW (“social justice warrior”), far-left swing of the Democratic Party has placed ever-narrower victim group rights over common sense and in the process, shoved women’s rights to the back of the line. Recently, we’ve seen them demand that“transgender women” (women who used to be men, or even just men who “identify” as women”) be allowed to compete in women’s athletic events such as wrestling, weight-lifting and marathons, while we all pretend that the facts of biology don’t exist.

Now, the latest denial of reality at the expense of women’s health and safety: New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio (who is apparently trying to set a record for “Worst Mayor Ever”) and the city’s human rights commissioner Carmelyn Malalis announced that transgender jail prisoners will be allowed to be housed in jails with whichever gender they identify with. That means that male criminals who identify as women can be moved to women’s jails and women prisoners who identify as men can move to men’s jails.

In a statement, DeBlasio declared, “It’s the city’s responsibility to protect the rights and safety of all New Yorkers, and that means protecting transgender individuals in city jails as well.” All the other official statements talked about the need to protect prisoners who are “transitioning” or who identify as women from being attacked. Which is fine – except some critics pointed out that they didn’t address the rights of women prisoners not to have their privacy (or worse) violated.

The obvious solution would seem to be a special jail just for housing transgender prisoners. In fact, NYC already has one. Would it surprise you to learn that it was scheduled for closure due to recent scandals over mismanagement? Me, neither. But officials decided to keep it open as an option for transgender inmates who don’t feel comfortable or safe in either the male or female jails. As for female prisoners who don’t feel safe being locked up behind bars with male felons who claim to “identify” as women…good luck. I’m sorry that in the leftist Utopian fantasyland of Mayor DeBlasio and his ilk, women's rights to privacy and safety come last.
