Our prayers and condolences for the many victims of the terrorist attacks on two mosques in New Zealand Thursday. Four people are in custody, and 49 are dead with over 20 more wounded.

Details are still sketchy, but the shooting suspect reportedly called himself an “eco-fascist.” The media are describing him as a “rightwing extremist,” but he wrote a bizarre, 74-page manifesto combining radical ideas across the political spectrum:
It’s a completely crazy hodgepodge of radical ideas, encompassing racism, environmentalism (the world is being destroyed by overpopulation by the “wrong” people), anti-immigrant sentiment, admiration for Chinese authoritarian communism, hatred of capitalism and free markets, and more contradictory far-right and far-left lunacy.
Ironically, he also hoped these attacks would spur more gun control laws, but at one of the mosques, a would-be victim surprised the attacker by pulling a gun and he ran away. At the other mosque, nobody was armed, so the shooting went on longer and three times as many people died.

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler declared, “It is important that Congress stand up for the principle of full transparency.” That, of course, is pure, USDA Grade-A baloney. House Democrats have little use for transparency about their own offices, taxes or finances. They just want anything that might prove damaging or embarrassing to President Trump waved around in public like a giant foam finger. As for their claims that the report must be made public to “clear up any questions,” that’s also a load of cheap luncheon loaf. Before even seeing the report, Adam Schiff has already declared that he won’t accept it and will keep launching more investigations anyway.
For their part, Republicans are betting the Mueller probe will have labored mightily, expensively and at great length and found zero “Russian collusion.” But if the report remains secret, as the law requires, Democrats would keep flailing that dead horse forever.
Besides, what’s the point in even trying to keep it secret? Does anyone seriously believe that some Democratic committee member wouldn’t leak it to the New York Times or CNN faster than it would take the town gossip to blab about your Aunt Gertie’s hysterectomy? I’m amused that they even bothered to include the part about redacting classified information. If any classified information reflects badly on Trump, that would be the first thing leaked. They’d either rush over to Rachel Maddow’s TV studio or put it on Hillary’s email server, whichever spreads classified information faster.
Worth noting: this is a “nonbinding resolution.” So maybe it won’t be released, because Congress members are absolutely bound first and foremost to their duty to observe the law and not their desire to harm their political opponents.
Anyone buy that? If so, I have some lovely oceanfront property in South Dakota I’d like to sell you.

A surprisingly large group of twelve Republican Senators broke ranks to vote to block President Trump’s use of an emergency declaration to deal with border security. The vote was 59-41, following a 245-182 House vote against Trump.
It’s all likely moot, since Trump responded with his most terse tweet ever: “Veto.” It’s unlikely Congress can muster the two-thirds vote to override his veto.
The Senators voting against it, including Mitt Romney and Rand Paul, explained their votes as defenses of the Constitution against executive overreach. That’s on the assumption that the border issue is not really an emergency, since crossings have been higher at previous times in history. But Trump says it’s an emergency because policy changes have led to illegal crossers being held instead of sent back, which has our facilities full and our courts deeply backlogged, not to mention the fact that today’s border crossers aren’t just migrant farm workers. We’re also dealing with deadly drug smuggling, human trafficking, violent gangs, massive caravans of invaders and terrorists.
While I am very sympathetic to the philosophical argument against executive overreach and protecting the separation of powers, I also don’t want to see Congress tie the hands of the President when he has a genuine emergency to deal with. One reason the Founders put certain powers into the hands of an executive elected by the entire nation is that they understood situations would arise in which swift action had to be taken, and there wouldn’t be time for a lot of quarreling legislators to jawbone over it for months. I would also be more sympathetic to Congress standing up to Trump on executive overreach if they hadn’t rolled over like obedient puppies for eight years while Obama governed by executive order. Or if they’d challenged any of his emergency declarations.
So it seems to me that the question of whether Trump should be able to do this lies in whether the situation at the border really is an emergency. Ted Cruz is one of the Senate’s leading experts on the Constitution and, being from Texas, also knows what’s happening on the border. He says that not only is the emergency declaration within the President’s power, but the situation it’s meant to deal with is definitely an emergency:
It’s obvious that very few members of Congress know as much about the Constitution as Ted Cruz. But how many have even been to the border? When Nancy Pelosi of San Francisco, Chuck Schumer of New York or other skeptics scoff at the idea that there’s a crisis 2,000 miles away, have they actually made the trip to the border, visited the detention centers and talked to the border agents who have to deal with the consequences of their policies?
It’s an awfully funny coincidence that the handful of Congress members who actually have been to the border come back saying, “Holy cow! Yes, it’s an emergency!”

Small businesses create two-thirds of all jobs, and right now, they’re increasing hiring at the highest rated since the survey started being taken. Even better, many small business owners feel they’re understaffed and are having a hard time finding enough workers, with 16 percent planning to hire more people in the next three months.
It’s a job creation engine so strong that virtually the only way to kill it would be to elect a bunch of economically-illiterate leftists who’ll try to “transform” the economy to make it run on wind power. Remember, when liberals tell you they want to help small businesses, that means they want to do everything possible to help keep them small. If you don’t believe me, remember what it was like trying to get a job when you would’ve been employee #50 under the Obamacare mandates.

Further proof that liberals love reporters when they’re acting as attack dogs on the right, but if they don’t act like lap dogs to the left, they want the press neutered.
It’s always been a source of both frustration and amusement to me to watch the switch get flipped on standards whenever power changes hands in Washington. This used to be limited to a few issues like the homeless being a national crisis under Republicans and disappearing from the news the second a Democrat was elected. Now, it covers a whole range of topics:
Women accusing Clinton of sexually harassing and raping them? It’s his private sex life, and they’re bimbos not worth listening to. (FLIP!) Women accusing Trump of trying to kiss them? Impeach him!
Obama’s DOJ getting secret warrants to spy on reporters’ private communications to discover their sources? National security. (FLIP!) Trump criticizing the media for running negative fake stories against him? An unconstitutional assault on freedom of the press!
This is why it’s said that in Washington, if it weren’t for double standards, there’d be no standards at all.

There has been a tendency recently in the media, whenever a story reflects negatively on a liberal, to downplay what the liberal did and instead tut-tut at Republicans who point it out, as if the accusation of “playing politics” were worse than the original perfidy. It’s so common, the trope now has a shorthand nickname: “Republicans pounce.” For instance, if a Democrat runs over a grandmother while driving a stolen car drunk and Republicans question whether he’s a suitable Presidential candidate, the news slant isn’t “Drunken Democratic car thief runs over granny,” it’s “Republicans pounce, politicize auto mishap.”
We’re already seeing this with the college admissions scandal, which has ensnared some very prominent liberals, including one of the more outspoken industry virtue signalers in “Transamerica” star Felicity Huffman. You can see her here, lecturing us on “educational inequality” while allegedly paying a $15,000 bribe to get her daughter into USC in the place of some more deserving student who actually took his or her own SAT test.
(To be fair, this scandal has also ensnared some people such as Lori Laughlin, who isn’t an outspoken conservative but is closely associated with the family-friendly Hallmark Channel.)
You’d think this would be an issue that all Americans could actually agree on: that it’s not right to use wealth and privilege to cheat to get your unqualified child a spot in a top college that some other student deserves more, and it’s appalling that colleges would engage in it. But instead of placing the condemnation where it belongs, some liberal media figures are somehow finding a way to make President Trump the focus of this story. Instead of lamenting the cheating, they are openly fretting that this will help bolster Trump’s claim that powerful elites are rigging the system, which he uses to gin up “populist resentment.”
Or to put it another way, it helps prove Trump right, and that's the worst possible thing that could happen. If powerful elites really are cheating to rig the system, then they deserve to be resented. It might be uncomfortable for Trump’s critics to admit he was right (and not just in this one area). I know they’d rather believe, for some reason, that there are 63 million Americans who voted for him just because they’re racist, sexist, homophobic, Islamophobic, xenophobic deplorables, and not because they were sick of liberal policies that don’t work and out-of-touch hypocrites condescendingly lying to them about it.
It’s always hard to face ugly truths, particularly when they’re on your side. But just as I refuse to defend every Trump tweet or policy, liberals don’t have to defend cheating elites, just because they’re their cheating elites and admitting they cheated proves Trump's point.
