Any military leader will tell you that if you are heading into a battle, one trait you hope the other side possesses is predictability. So if you think of the coming Presidential election as a battle, then you can see how blessed Trump is that his opponents never know what he will say or do next, but they are predictable as a cuckoo clock and as easy to play as a kazoo.
The latest example started when Reps. Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib were banned from visiting Israel after it was discovered they’d let a notorious anti-Semitic group plan their trip and they intended to use the visit to incite anti-Israel unrest and propaganda with Palestinian Authority leaders and promote the odious BDS movement. An earlier generation of Democratic leaders would have taken them to the woodshed, but predictably, today’s Democrats rallied to defend the indefensible and even talked of taking measures to punish Israel for not letting the snakes into their own garden.
Relying on his opponents’ predictability, Trump goaded them into doubling down by doing what nobody would expect of a sitting President: he openly slammed Tlaib and Omar, talked about all the things he’d done that have made him the most pro-Israel President ever, then took it further, questioning why Jews support Democrats, and adding, “In my opinion, you vote for a Democrat, you’re being very disloyal to Jewish people and very disloyal to Israel. And only weak people would say anything other than that.”

The Democrats’ reaction was (say it with me) predictable. They went ballistic, calling Trump a dictator and comparing him to Hitler. Because who’s more famous for defending Jews from attack than Hitler? I know, it makes absolutely no sense, but Trump knows that they’ve been calling Republicans “Hitler,” “Nazi” and “fascist” for so long that they now do it from force of habit, even when it couldn’t possibly be less appropriate.
Note that nowhere in that response was anything defending Israel or repudiating the hateful rhetoric of Omar and Tlaib, or explaining why Jews should keep voting for Democrats. It was just an unhinged attack on Trump that included their least convincing comparison of a Republican to Hitler so far. Maybe that demonstration of where their true inclinations lie will actually convince some Jewish voters who traditionally support liberals to stop and think for a moment and ask themselves why they’re supporting people who keep doubling down on defending blatant anti-Semites who proudly align themselves with the sworn enemies of Israel?
And to any media figures who will try to write off Trump’s comments as just unstable and erratic ad-libbing, note that the story says he made similar comments two days in a row. That’s not ad-libbing. That’s laying a very deliberate trap and knowing your opponent is going to be predictable enough to charge headfirst into it.
