I know that the mainstream media go charging after any anti-Trump story like starving dogs after a hot dog wagon, but could they at least do the most basic fact-checking first?
The latest stampede to Outrageville centers on the left’s new talking point that Trump is just tweeting about the NFL and ignoring the devastating hurricane damage in Puerto Rico because, of course, he’s a big, mean racist who wants all non-white people to suffer and die.
Here are the facts: it’s true that rescue efforts are slower than they were in Houston and Florida. But Puerto Rico is an island, and its infrastructure has been demolished. Power is down everywhere, including air traffic control systems, and its roads and airports are blocked with debris, making it much harder to bring in aid. But that doesn’t mean Trump is ignoring their suffering.
Puerto Rican Gov. Ricardo Rosselló told PBS: “We are very grateful for the Administration. They have responded quickly. The President has been very attentive to the situation, personally calling me several times. FEMA and the FEMA Director have been here in Puerto Rico twice, as a matter of fact, they were here with us today making sure that all the resources and FEMA were working in conjunction with the central government. We’ve been working together, we’ve been getting results. The magnitude of this disaster is enormous, this is going to take a lot of help, a lot of collaboration. So my call is to Congressmen and Congresswomen to take action quickly and conclusively with an aid package for Puerto Rico.” Incidentally, the Governor is a Democrat. Maybe it was also impossible for the Democrats' latest anti-Trump talking points to make it in.
But it gets worse. It’s a mantra of the left that you never let a good crisis go to waste when you can exploit people’s suffering for cheap political gain. So Hillary Clinton piled on by snarking to a radio interviewer that she’s “not sure he knows that Puerto Ricans are American citizens.”
First of all, if I were the co-head of the Clinton Foundation, I wouldn’t be throwing rocks at how anyone else failed to help an island nation devastated by a natural disaster. Secondly, as the link shows, a simple Google search would have turned up a 2016 op-ed by Trump, detailing how he would give more attention to US territories such as Puerto Rico.
I think the best comment on Hillary’s unwarranted attack came from a man at the Instapundit blog who wrote, “I'm quite sure that Trump knows Puerto Ricans are citizens. What a shame (for her, not us or the country) Hillary didn't know that people in Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin are voters.”
Now, in the name of all that’s decent, can we please set the name-calling and political point-scoring aside and concentrate on helping the hurricane victims?
