Cancel the Oscars

November 22, 2017 |

The annual Oscar ceremony has become a four-hour ritual in which showbiz liberals such as Kevin Spacey and Casey Affleck hand trophies to people like Harvey Weinstein while viciously mocking conservatives and piously lecturing the rest of us about how much better Hollywood’s morals and standards are than ours.

Well, entertainment writer Kyle Smith of the New York Post has a modest proposal for this year’s Oscarcast: Cancel it. Spare us all the phony sanctimony and spare yourselves the embarrassment. Surely, people in Hollywood have more worthwhile things to do with their time than going to a big expensive party to congratulate themselves on their own moral superiority.

I know there will be objections to people who like to hold Oscar parties and take a drink of booze every time someone says “Trump,” but he makes a darn good argument. Hear him out.

The viewership is dwindling every year. I suspect that other competing "self licking ice cream cone" events are enlarging and also specializing into hip hop, country, etc, etc. By March of the year no one can really remember any good movies made in Hollywood the last year. I think the the Oscars is a legacy event, looking back on glory days and trying to remind people of the names of the loser films of the previous year while also allowing the Chapter Nine, credit card strapped actors and actresses to dress up, bee seen and hopefully land a job or a commercial. I don't watch the Oscars, or any event from Hollyweird. That goes the same for pro football. I could not care less what Hollyweird and the NFL are thinking or doing, let alone acting or saying. They are not role models for Americans. Neither are Congressmen or women.

I gave up on the Oscars when John Wayne died, nothing left to see.

What a great idea! We stopped watching the Oscars 1.) when Hollywood stopped producing movies we could enjoy as a family (okay, there are still some...and there's now Netflix), and 2.) started lecturing us on our morals and politics. Who wants to sit for four hours and be talked down to? Use the money spent on the Oscars to feed the hungry, fund a shelter, rescue dogs and cats - do something positive!

Only the brain dead give a rip about the oscars. Bunch of pious fools blowing smoke up each others backsides.

Yep, agree. Not many things are as much a waste of public airwaves as Oscars; Emmys may not be far behind.
