I recently quoted the old saying, “When you find yourself in a hole, stop digging.”  Add NBC News to the list of media outlets that’s apparently never heard that one.

After soiling their reputation like Baby Huey’s diaper in the rush to condemn the students of Covington Catholic High School, and rather than abjectly apologizing and promising to be more professional, NBC seems determined to keep digging until they find a pony in the pile of horse manure they generated themselves.

The network’s latest attempt to trash the reputations of some innocent Catholic teenagers came with an article headlined, “Gay valedictorian banned from speaking at Covington graduation ‘not surprised’ by D.C. controversy.”  Gee, sounds like that school must be a  haven for censorious homophobes!

Except there are a few minor problems with NBC's headline.

Roger Stone indicted

By Mike Huckabee

Breaking news this morning:  Special Counsel Robert Mueller has indicted longtime Trump political adviser Roger Stone on charges of obstruction, making false statements and witness tampering.  Not a big surprise: Stone has been saying for months that he expected Mueller might indict him because he suspects Stone had advance knowledge of WikiLeaks’ release of DNC emails during the 2016 campaign, which Stone denies.

Fox News reports that the indictment “alleges that Stone worked to obstruct the House Intelligence Committee’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election by making false statements to the committee, denying he had records sought by the committee and persuading a witness to provide false testimony.”  So another high-profile indictment not for with actually colluding with Russia to affect the election, but for allegedly trying to obstruct the investigators.

It’s not clear whether Stone knew of the coming indictments on Wednesday night when he appeared on Tucker Carlson’s Fox News show, but he said, “No matter how much pressure they put on me, no matter what they say, I will not bear false witness against Donald Trump. I will not do what Michael Cohen has done and make up lies to ease the pressure on myself.”

There’s more at the link if you want details, but I’m sure there will be a lot more to come from this story.

President Trump proposes a "down payment"

By Mike Huckabee

Another day and another conciliatory offer from President Trump to reopen the government – this time, a proposal for a “down payment” on a border wall, meaning less than the original $5.7 billion he requested.  Followed immediately by another adamant, kneejerk refusal from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

So if you are on the federal payroll and want to know why this is stretching on and on, even though the shutdown itself has already cost more than $5.7 billion, please note that the person who is stubbornly refusing to budge an inch and negotiate an end to it – indeed, who is apparently dead-set on holding hold out forever to get her way, no matter how many paychecks you have to miss (but not her) – is Nancy Pelosi.

But at least, it’s earned her a cool nickname from Trump.  He’s now calling her “Dr. No.”

Double standards on the Left

By Mike Huckabee

Remember the ugly incident in Washington where some rude young people taunted and tried to assault an elderly man just because of his political views?  And leftists were outraged and demanded those young punks be held to account?

No, I’m not talking about the Catholic school boys and the Native American activist.  That story was a big fat, manufactured lie that liberals went ballistic over.  I’m talking about the two young liberals who caught on video being incredibly rude and nasty to a 71-year-old Trump supporter who was just minding his own business, and liberals didn’t say “boo” about them.

Once again proving the saying about the left, “If it weren’t for double standards, they’d have no standards at all.”

Planned Parenthood update

By Mike Huckabee

America’s largest abortion provider, Planned Parenthood, gets over half a billion dollars a year in our tax money from Washington.  Despite Republican promises that if they were in charge of Congress, that would be cut off, PP’s federal funding was actually increased by over $200,000 last year.  Planned Parenthood and its defenders insist that none of this federal money is used to support abortion, and that if it were cut off, it would deal a devastating blow to providing women with crucial “health services.”

Abortion is not progressive

By Mike Huckabee

Having made the word “liberal” truly toxic, today’s leftists have slapped a new label on their failed policies: “Progressive.” I’ve often asked what’s “progressive” about wanting to repeat the same ruinous economic policies that have brought poverty, inequality, death and misery everywhere they’ve been tried for over a century. But it’s not just in that arena that “progressives” (I always put it in quotation marks, for good reason) are trying to lead society backwards. Their views of abortion also run counter to public opinion, basic decency, mounting scientific evidence and the tide of history.

For a tragic example, look to New York. Tuesday, on the 46th anniversary of the Supreme Court’s notorious Roe v. Wade ruling, Democrats who recently took power in both the state Assembly and Senate passed a sweeping pro-abortion bill that Gov. Andrew Cuomo ran on a promise to sign. It’s laughably dubbed the “Reproductive Health Act.” It actually has nothing to do with reproduction or health.

Ainsworth: Some musings on "Beto" O'Rourke and Alexandria O-C

By Laura Ainsworth, Staff writer

If you want to read something hilarious (and who doesn’t need that right now?), check out “Beto’s Blog,” a parody site based on the poetically mundane musings of Texas congressman, failed senatorial candidate and sort-of Presidential hopeful Robert “Beto” O’Rourke. It was reportedly inspired by the tweeting he did while sitting in the dentist’s chair, taking selfies while flashing those Kennedy-esque teeth, frothy gums exposed. Here’s just a little excerpt, as offered by FOX News’ Tucker Carlson on Thursday night:

“Have been stuck lately. In and out of a funk. My last day of work was January 2nd. It’s been more than twenty years since I was last not working...Maybe if I get moving, on the road, meet people, learn about what’s going on where they live, have some adventure...go where I don’t know and I’m not known, it’ll clear my head, reset, I’ll think new thoughts, break out of the loops I’ve been stuck in.”

Quite amusing. Here’s more…

Holy Love

By Anonymous

A newsletter reader facing terminal cancer submitted this beautiful sonnet about how facing death has deepened his faith.

My soul wants to cry for aid
under a lowering sky.
But that's not how this game is played,
for I am marked to die.
The boon of palliative care
was never meant for me;
and it's in no way unfair
because now, on bended knee
I can behold in full a gentle Grace;
pain's opened divinity's door
and gave me glimpse of smiling Face;
how could I ask for more?
The clouds may be so grey above,
but over them, shines Holy Love.
