One of the best educational programs kids can be exposed to is the Eddie Eagle program that teaches firearms safety. It hammers home the idea that a gun is not a toy, and if you find one, you don’t touch it, you report it to an adult. Sadly, every year, we see children or even adults killed or injured because a child who was not instructed in proper caution around firearms happened across one and thought it was a toy.
So why doesn’t every school teach the free Eddie Eagle program? Because it’s offered by the NRA, and many parents have been misled into thinking that the NRA is just a bunch of “gun nuts” who are responsible for mass shootings, even though I can’t think of a single mass shooter who has ever been an NRA member (although I bet a lot of potential mass shootings have been stopped by NRA members.) They think the NRA is trying to brainwash their children. They would rather just blame the gun. It’s like banning power drills because they can be deadly if you let a kid use one who’s never been instructed in its safe handling.
To illustrate the dangers of that attitude, police and TV station KWWL in Waterloo, Iowa, conducted an experiment. They secretly taped eight pre-school and kindergarten kids who had never been trained in gun safety in a room where an unloaded gun had been hidden in a toy box. You can imagine what happened next. Anti-gun parents should watch this video. Maybe it would shock them into accepting that keeping their kids in ignorance of firearms isn’t bliss, it’s potential suicide.
