Either Wall Street elites are out of their minds, whistling past the graveyard, or else just extremely confident of their ability to buy off Rep. Maxine Waters (not an unreasonable assumption, considering her history). You make the call after reading these two stories side-by-side:
From Bloomberg business news, a story about how the bankers are warming up to the idea of Mad Maxine becoming the chair of the House Financial Services Committee, and think all the worries about having a raving, angry leftwinger in the job are more headlines than reality.
Now, here is Maxine herself, telling a roaring crowd of fired-up constituents that once she’s in power, she’s going to wreak vengeance on all who have dared tick her off, especially all the banks and insurance companies.
She said ominously (the reporter’s own adverb) to the banks, “I have not forgotten you foreclosed on our houses. I have not forgotten that you undermined our communities. I have not forgotten that you sold us those exotic products, had us sign on the dotted line for junk and for mess that we could not afford. I have people who are homeless who have never gotten back into a home. What am I going to do to you? What I am going to do to you is fair. I’m going to do to you what you did to us.”
Yep, sounds like someone Wall Street bankers can work with!
Frankly, aside from questioning the claim that banks forced people to buy houses they couldn’t afford, I’m not bothered by the idea of seeing some of those smug, “too-big-to-fail” bankers having to deal with Maxine Waters. Problem is, if that happened, all the rest of would have to deal with her as well. Our 401k’s would have to deal with her. If she’s in power, that means the Democrats took over the House and Nancy Pelosi, Adam Schiff and the rest of that menagerie of hotheads, hypocrites and hidden and not-so-hidden socialists that make up the current Democratic leadership will all be in power. I wouldn’t cry too hard if Maxine hounded some arrogant Wall Street bankers into homelessness, but I don’t want the rest of us to join them.
It’s not worth the trade-off. If the image of Nancy Pelosi, Maxine Waters, et al, being in charge of things that seriously affect your life and your financial well-being doesn’t scare you to the polls to vote straight Republican, then nothing will.
