Evening Edition - April 19

April 19, 2020 |

I’ve been concerned enough about the Coronavirus that I haven’t left my home in almost 6 weeks and have taken extreme precautions to protect my family and myself. It wasn’t irrational fear about getting sick, but respect for the guidelines so we can get this over with. But there is something that scares me worse than a virus and in fact, scares me more than death itself. I’ve made arrangements both for my physical death and my eternal life once that happens. But I’m genuinely afraid that we are losing our civil liberties and our fundamental freedoms as they are ripped from our lives. Shockingly, many American are actually cheering about it. To quote Jesus, “Father, Forgive them-they know NOT what they do!”

In KY, it took a smart and “rule-of-law” federal judge on Saturday afternoon before Easter Sunday to declare that the government couldn’t forbid a Louisville church from offering a drive-in service to its members. The federal judge noted that there was irony in that people were free to visit a liquor store drive-through couldn’t attend a drive-in church service and that he doubted that consumption of alcohol was somehow considered more “essential” than attending church on Easter Sunday.

In Greenville, MS the mayor sent cops to a church to forbid the people from even sitting in their own cars in the church parking lot for a drive-in service and gave $500 tickets to each person sitting in his or her own car. The only violators of safe social distancing were the cops, who went right up to car windows and barked orders and handed tickets to startled worshippers. Thank God, Attorney General Bill Barr has decided to review clear violations of the 1st Amendment in cases like this.

In Michigan, the Governor moved from nanny to tyrant by forbidding people to buy seeds to plant gardens, even though the seeds were on shelves in stores that were open! That resulted in hundreds of people driving around the State Capitol, honking their horns in protest. The Governor stubbornly asserted that she was right. So people planting their own gardens and eating produce they grow is somehow more unhealthy than going to a supermarket and handling produce that may have been touched by dozens of strangers?

In addition, a father was arrested and handcuffed for playing catch with his own daughter in a completely deserted public park. People have been threatened with arrest for setting foot in their own backyards. The New Jersey Governor, when asked about what gave him the right to suspend the Bill of Rights, said, “that’s above my pay grade…we weren’t thinking about the Bill of Rights when we did this.” Obviously not! Well we all need to be thinking about it!

I don’t want any of us to get sick or die from a virus that probably came not from bat-soup, but a Chinese bio-lab. But if we freely surrender our basic civil liberties now, don’t think we will ever get all of them back. I don’t trust government. I was in government long enough to know that the only thing between freedom and tyranny is a vigilant citizen who remembers that government works for us—not the other way around.

I fully understand the Biblical mandate to obey civil authorities, but I also understand that when civil authorities demand of me to do something immoral or against the law or Constitution, I have not merely a right, but a responsibility to resist and to willingly suffer the consequences. Thank God for Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., Dietrich Bonhoeffer, and for that matter the entirety of our Founding Fathers who revolted against racism, Nazism, and tyranny but willingly suffered for doing so because they valued liberty and the law more than life itself.

It’s fine to be afraid of the virus. It’s wise to take precautions. But be afraid of a government that can take your life, your liberty, and these days, even your freedom to worship your Lord.

The ending of your news......Amen, Amen, Amen!! So sad so many who live in our Great Country do not appreciate it nor really know what this country was founded on to begin with!! So sad that so many of our younger people haven't really been TAUGHT this in so many schools for some time!! We still need to pray, and pray hard, for this time in our situation and for God to be merciful to the United States of America!!

Amen, Mike. I was pleased to see 2000 Israelis protesting the quarantine laws Netanyahu had imposed against public gatherings in Jerusalem (while staying 6 ft apart from each other). Of course the Israelis have one up on us in defending their rights, in that they, or their parents had their rights stripped by the Nazis not too many years ago. From that experience, the Israelis are aware of the warning signs. BUT... are we? I think not.

Thank you Mike!! I’m not nearly as afraid of this virus as I am the fools wanting to alter the American way of life. We need to rise up against this nonsense!

I hope this is an eye opening occasion for all the Liberal run to the ground states that Socialism is evil and just develops power hungry tyrants who will end up taking away all our freedoms, especially our religious freedoms. May the American people truly wake up and smell the coffee, eggs, bacon and sausage and vote everyone of these power hungry Liberal leftist Democrats out of office.

Gov. Mike Huckabee, I fully agree with you and wondered what your thoughts are on how we standup for those freedoms at risk, when it seems that the risks of the virus through mitigation is working?
I feel the lose of my freedoms just in the fact the going to the grocery store puts me at risk of the virus. No longer do I feel safe in the very land I love and even had my great great grandpa die for Aug 23rd 1864 in the civil war under General Sherman. Yes on the Union side.
But those freedoms now ensalve me [us] once again. I can only thank God for the truth of His Son Jesus Christ who has set me free and I know true freedom when I know Him.
But I would like to know what we can do to maintain those Freedoms we know as America?
Thanks for your comforting words and ongoing support.

I would think that part of the problem is people don’t know the constitution and that their rights are being destroyed.

    Dear Governor
With this unscientific and irrational panic that shut down the entire world economy it seems that it exposed the true nature of most of democrats politicians and globalist who have no problem using lies and disingenuous information to exact totalitarian control. Do we have enough people left who cherishes their freedoms to destroy our enemies?

Just learned from a friend today that a couple from our town that owns expensive property in Utah was told by local authorities they had 24 hours to leave, and quote, "You are not residents here and we don't want your kind here!" This couple pay very large taxes on their very expensive home and acreage. What right does local police/government have to deny them use of their property?

There are times when, for the common good, we need to voluntarily take actions that are in consistent with our rights as citizens. That is similar to what Jesus did in going to the cross for our benefit. He had every right to, instead, turn away and let us suffer the consequences of our sins. But out of love for us, he allowed himself to be falsely accused in a sham trial and executed. That is what a hero does.
Perhaps, when circumstances require our leaders to ask us to do what we are constitutionally not required to do, they should make it a request and not a "law" or "directive". They should also state the relevant portion of the constitution as well of their reason for the request and trust us to do as asked for the sake of our own and others well being. They might get a better response that way, than by forcing us to do something contrary to our rights.

Wishful thinking on my part. I wish our founding fathers where here today to set these leftist, tyrannical slugs, straight on our Constition & Bill of Rights.
After all that is said & done, our beautiful country will never be the same as it was 4 months ago. I really hope we get to the bottom of this with China & WHO. This has destroyed our global economy & health system. Do you really think China will be true blue in any admission of guilt? Today, I'm a "Debbie Downer." Sorry!

Amen, Mike! We live here in Asheville, NC which is a liberal city but so far no arrests and plenty of people still out and about. But if they start telling us we cannot go out for a walk or go to a drive in church service then that does it!

100% agree. I can manage my own health. If you are concerned or high risk then manage your own health however you feel is necessary. For the government to tell me I'm at risk sitting in a chair on
the beach talking to a friend but not at the grocery store, Home Depot, the liquor store, it's just wrong. America is the greatest country because of our liberties and I will fight for them.

There is no doubt in my mind that the lock-down was unnecessary. Patients could have been transferred to hospitals where there were open beds as the need arised. This was a planned attack on our way of life and President Trump.

The 'Know not what they do" club is the same bunch that 100% supports the Democrats without regard for any action they may in the process of pushing. They could care less that they are loosing civil liberties and fundamental freedoms in addition to supporting anti-Christian policies. And also aslong as the 'Free' train continues to roll along powered by an oversized Socialist/Communist engineer.

Dear Mike, I was reared by WWII parents, who valued liberty. I tell the young people frequently-
the Government has gotten too big because of the radical one world gov. left, who wishes to turn our country into a communist one. I tell them about the Constitution and Bill of Rights and the Amendments. I tell them - it is written in plain english- not government-ease- which is rife with ill will and lies. I have been a proponent for a very long time -let we property owners spend our school tax money WHERE WE CHOOSE TOO!!!!!!! Consequences! Thankyou Mike for speaking up and out! I agree with you 100%. I've been thinking that there will not ever be "back to normal " as we knew it 4 months ago. We have to be close to the Rapture.
