As if CNN hadn’t already shattered its journalistic reputation with its non-stop anti-Trump advocacy over the past year, the network now seems determined to pound the shards of its integrity into a fine paste with its naked anti-NRA advocacy in the wake of the tragic school shooting in Florida.
Wednesday’s CNN “townhall” on the issue is being ripped far and wide for being so obviously stacked that I’ve seen Wrestlemania matches that were less pre-scripted, and more intellectually enlightening. Sen. Marco Rubio and NRA spokeswoman Dana Loesch deserve respect and combat pay for having the guts to show up and try to make a reasoned case for protecting the Second Amendment while facing an angry, partisan crowd that yelled, “You’re a murderer” and an obscene sexist slur at Ms. Loesch. Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel sat smugly by, insisting that only the shooter was to blame, then shifting blame to the NRA and legal gun owners. All the while, he was aware that his own department had made 39 visits to the shooter’s home and taken 20 concerned calls from the public and done nothing.
Worse, and this is today’s biggest bombshell: we now know one of his officers, Deputy Scot Peterson, was armed, in uniform and on the scene when the shooting started, but did nothing. Despite his duty to confront the shooter as quickly as possible, he reportedly waited outside the school for up to four minutes until police arrived, while inside, valiant unarmed 14-and-15-year-old JROTC students were laying down their lives to try to save their classmates from the gunman.
Peterson was put on unpaid leave pending an investigation, but he opted to resign. There are also reports that deputies have been sent to his home, in response to threats from the furious public. Nice to know that the Sheriff has belatedly figured out how to protect someone who’s under threat. This has sparked accusations that he may be the worst Sheriff in America and demands that he resign. I’d direct you to the petitions, but I’m sure you’ll see them all over the Internet.

Meanwhile, back at the CNN “townhall,” there were a few in the crowd who didn’t blame the NRA for the shooter’s actions or think the answer to stopping school shootings is more useless laws and repealing a Constitutional right. They included Colton Haab, a student who survived the shooting, but he left because he claimed CNN gave him a scripted question instead of what he wanted to say, and that the whole “townhall” was scripted.
CNN denies Haab’s accusations, which of course I believe. Especially since CNN failed to mention on-air or online that “moderator” Jake Tapper is a former spokesman for Handgun Control Inc., a pro-gun control, anti-NRA lobbying group (admittedly for a short time).
If CNN and its many cheerleaders in the media who think their dream of banning guns is finally nigh really believe that “townhall” advanced their case, they may be in for a rude awakening. It did not play well outside their echo chamber.
It’s ironic that while CNN fills its airwaves with rants about how President Trump’s behavior demeans his position, on the same day they threw this Roman Gladiator spectacle and advocated for more government in the wake of the most shocking and tragic example of widespread government failure in recent memory, Trump also welcomed parents and survivors of the shooting to the White House. There was no shouting, finger-pointing or name-calling, and afterward, attendees praised Trump for giving them his time and for how he handled it. He quietly expressed compassion and grief and listened respectfully to their suggestions, but also explained why he thinks the best way to prevent such shootings is to eliminate “gun-free zones” and have armed, trained teachers or armed guards on hand.
Now, some are saying that the cowardly actions of the armed guard in Florida prove that wouldn’t work. Many brave law enforcement officers beg to differ. It would work very well, as long as the armed deputy wasn’t trained by Sheriff Israel.
