Today's Commentary --- Black Friday -- Happy Thanksgiving -- Presidential pardon issued -- Headline of the day -- The Baltic Experience 2019 -- Obama Judge blocks Trump -- Scandal of the day -- Evening Edition - Daily Verse

Happy Black Friday, America! Although thanks to the Internet and early Black Friday deals, Black Friday is no longer stirring as much controversy as it did when it first started encroaching on Thursday night and pulling people away from their family Thanksgiving celebrations.  Merchants have now pushed it so far forward that in some cases, it’s crept past Thanksgiving.  All their Black Fridays deals are sold out by Wednesday.  Well, at least it’s no longer interfering so much with Thanksgiving, although at this rate, it might soon be encroaching on Halloween.

Like many Americans, I’m making sure I enjoy this holiday with my family and friends by not talking about politics or the recent election.  Instead, I'd like to talk about something that doesn't change with the passing headlines.  It's the greatest gift that a parent can give to a child: the gift of character.  This is the time of year when people go out shopping for holiday bargains, and it’s easy to let the thrill of the hunt and the lure of saving a few bucks on the latest gadgets override our good manners and consideration for others.  But if you have character, that’s not a problem.

Where does character come from?  It’s rooted in parents teaching their kids integrity and respect for others.  And it may not be politically correct to say so, but kids need to be disciplined according to traditional, agreed-upon standards.

Happy Thanksgiving

By Mike Huckabee

Happy Thanksgiving, America!  I hope you’re enjoying this most American of all holidays.  The best way I can think of for everyone to enjoy it is to turn off the news and not bring up politics or the recent election (or maybe where you are, the ongoing vote count) over the turkey and dressing.  Trust me, your family members will be extra thankful for that.

Of course, Thanksgiving is a time when we don’t just see our close relatives, we see family members that, for better or worse, we seldom see any other time of year.  When I was a boy, I had a very special relative who visited only over the holidays.  But he taught me a lesson that helped make me what I am today.  For that, I’m very thankful, which is why I like to revisit this story every Thanksgiving.

When I was a boy in Hope, Arkansas, one thing about the holidays I most looked forward to was the annual visit from my Uncle Garvin.  Garvin Elder was my mother’s half-brother from her dad’s first marriage, and so much older than her, he was like a grandpa to my sister and me.  He was an accountant and a lifelong bachelor from Houston, and quite an impressive figure whenever he arrived by bus in Hope.  He owned stocks (can you imagine such a thing?!) and carried a real leather suitcase with travel tags, not like the cardboard suitcase we owned but never used.  And he wore a suit, tie and starched white shirt every day.  In our town, if you saw a man in a suit, it could mean only one thing: he was either going to or coming from a funeral.

Over the holidays, while my parents were at work, Uncle Garvin was the only adult in the house.  So when he wasn’t taking his daily unbreakable appointment with the “Perry Mason” rerun, I would constantly pester him to play checkers with me.  Now you must understand, this was in the days before self-esteem classes and helicopter parents.  Uncle Garvin didn’t realize how impolite, damaging, even psychologically traumatic it was to beat the daylights out of a sensitive young boy at checkers.  No, he played to win.  And he relished beating me…which he did, over and over and over.

Of course, I hated losing to him.  But that just made me want to challenge him again.  Over time, I gradually got better until I actually beat him occasionally.

Looking back now, I realize what a huge favor Uncle Garvin did for me by developing my competitive spirit.  These days, we’ve built a society of handwringers so afraid of hurting a child’s self-esteem that everyone gets a trophy just for showing up, no matter how poorly they perform.  So there’s no incentive to work hard and get better.

This is the same mindset that’s given us incompetent CEOs who crash companies, then run to the government for a bailout because they’re “too big to fail.”  And idiots in government who bail them out with money they confiscate from hardworking taxpayers, because it’s “not fair” that some succeed when others don’t.  Or who think that "fairness" means taking a whole lot of money away from people who earn it and giving it to people who don't work but do vote.

Call me crazy, but I believe there’s something to be said for competition and for rewarding hard work, talent and intelligence.  That’s why every Thanksgiving, when I’m giving thanks to God for my countless blessings, I include a little prayer of thanks for my Uncle Garvin…and for all those long-ago checker games that were so painful to lose at the time.

Presidential pardon issued

By Mike Huckabee

When I heard that President Trump had pardoned the White House turkey, I thought it was another story about Jim Acosta getting his press pass back.  But it just turned out to be the annual tradition of pardoning the White House Thanksgiving turkey.

This year, there were two turkeys named Peas and Carrots.  Trump joked that while Peas had won a fair and open election to escape the dinner plate, “unfortunately, Carrots refused to concede and demanded a recount.”  He said, “We’re still fighting with Carrots,” but he’d decided to grant pardons to both.  However, he “warned them that House Democrats are likely to issue them both subpoenas” and “I can’t guarantee that the pardons won’t be enjoined by the 9th Circuit. It always happens.”

He then added, "All joking aside, this is a time for Americans to unite together in a spirit of love, understanding, unity and joy as one very proud American family.” He urged Americans to “give thanks to God, who continues to shed his almighty grace upon this magnificent land that we all love so very much. We are truly blessed to be Americans.”  And he asked everyone to pray for those in need, especially the victims of the deadly California wildfires, and for our soldiers who can’t be home for Thanksgiving.

To sum up: he made some funny, politically-tinged but not offensive jokes, then ended with a unifying message.  It’s too bad the White House Correspondents Association is so filled with partisan rancor or they could have asked Trump to speak instead of getting a series of increasingly bitter, nasty, leftist “comedians” who drove Trump away.  Maybe then that event would still be fun.

Headline of the Day

By Mike Huckabee

Headline of the Day! From the Washington Free Beacon: “Georgia Democrats Seek Repeal of ‘Undemocratic’ Voter Purge Law Passed by Georgia Democrats”

Of course, this is about the election in Georgia, where losing gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams has been showing all she’s learned at the feet of the Yoda of Sore Losers, Hillary Clinton.  It’s funny how whenever Republicans lose a close election, it’s called “democracy,” but when Democrats lose a close election, it’s called “voter suppression.”  And whenever Democrats lose, they never blame their own unpopular policies or uninspiring candidates.  No, there’s always some unfair aspect of the system that’s to blame and that must be done away with.  Like the Electoral College or the Senate or the gerrymandering that inexplicably costs them statewide elections.

In this latest case, they’re blaming a law that has been upheld by the Supreme Court and is actually required of states: that they insure that the voter rolls are accurate so that everyone can have faith in the election results.  Georgia’s “Use It or Lose It” law takes years to remove someone from the voter rolls, and voters are given multiple chances to let the state know that they still live where the records say they live – or that they are alive at all.  Democrats are now protesting that the law is voter suppression, even though the vast majority of names removed were those of dead people (granted, I’ve always heard that is one of the most loyal Democratic voting blocs.)

Making their righteous indignation even more hilarious is the fact that the law they’re now denouncing as “undemocratic” was actually passed in 1997 by a then-Democratic legislature and signed by a Democratic Governor.  Of course, today, Georgia has a GOP legislature and Governor. If they want to claim that’s because fewer dead people are voting, I won’t argue with them.

Obama judge blocks Trump

By Mike Huckabee

As reported Tuesday, an Obama-appointed federal judge in San Francisco has blocked President Trump (I should set up a macro to type that part of the sentence in one keystroke, it would save a lot of time) from preventing asylum from being granted to people who enter the country illegally.  Trump vowed to continue fighting these efforts by federal judges to usurp his Constitutional power to protect national security at our borders, and officials from the Justice Department and Homeland Security issued a joint statement rebuking the judge.  They called it “absurd that a set of advocacy groups can be found to have standing to sue to stop the entire federal government from acting so that illegal aliens can receive a government benefit to which they are not entitled.”  There’s more on this developing story here:

As an aside, I find it amazing that so many on the left constantly accuse Trump of being a power-mad dictator, a tyrant, or “literally Hitler.”  Yet in some ways, he has been one of the most restricted and constrained Presidents in history.  A few examples: despite having unquestionable authority to fire the head of the FBI or DOJ officials for any reason, when he fired James Comey (a richly-deserved canning that even Democrats had been clamoring for), he found himself accused of “obstructing justice” and having to deal with an endless investigation – and no matter how stunningly compromised the official overseeing the investigation (Rod Rosenstein) may be, imagine the nuclear reaction if Trump exercised his power to replace him, even though he should have had the integrity to step aside himself by now.

And despite having the sole Constitutional authority to take emergency measures to secure our borders, Trump is repeatedly blocked by unelected federal judges waving their gavels like Harry Potter’s magic wand.  This latest ban on Trump doing his job will last at least until a second hearing on December 19th, and how many dangerous invaders will illegally enter the US between now and then?  That’s precisely why the Founders put that power into the hands of one national executive who can act quickly, and not a crowd of bickering legislators or a legal system that moves slower than a turtle with arthritis.  Yet Trump actually respects the legal procedure. Other Presidents, including some greatly admired by historians, might have told such overreaching judges to go whistle up a rope.  And some of the same people denouncing Trump would have cheered them for their "strong stand."

Meanwhile, Democrats in the Senate petulantly refuse to confirm necessary staff positions at agencies such as HUD after nearly two years.  They assail Dr. Ben Carson for not getting enough done while they block the appointments of the very people he needs to do it.

And let’s not even mention the White House press conferences, where reporters think they have the right to act like drunken hecklers on dollar beer night at the Chuckle Hut.  When one of them finally crosses the line and gets thrown out, he begs a federal judge to force our “tyrant” President to let him back in again.  And Trump actually does!

Considering the bullheadedness of his opposition, Trump has been amazingly effective at getting his agenda enacted.  But the idea that he’s some kind of “tyrant” or “dictator” is laughable.  He’s more like Gulliver in “Gulliver’s Travels”: a regular guy trying to do what needs to be done, but mischaracterized as a giant monster and hamstrung by a thousand strings placed on him by Lilliputians.

Scandal of the day

By Mike Huckabee

Today’s DC scandal du jour comes to us courtesy of the Washington Post, which with “Casablanca”-like hypocrisy was shocked to discover that First Daughter Ivanka Trump used her private email account for government business.  Her spokespeople responded that this was early in the transition period before she was briefed on what to send or not send over her own email account.  They say it was mostly just family meeting schedules, there was no classified information sent, she did not use a private server, no emails were deleted, and they’ve all been turned over to the government.

Naturally, Democrats are outraged, or doing a pretty good Christmas pageant-level acting job of appearing outraged. Our national moral conscience, Sen. Richard Blumenthal, took to the cameras to lecture us on how this is such a serious infraction that it requires a House investigation and for the President to be “held accountable.”

I agree that it’s a mistake she shouldn’t have made, and by all means, look into it to make sure it’s nothing damaging.  But it’s a little late in the game for Democrats suddenly to start demanding stringent enforcement of the rules for email use by public officials. I thought no reasonable prosecutor would charge a Secretary of State with years of experience at holding top secret clearances for sending classified data over a homemade, unsecured server and then destroying the evidence when it was under subpoena; but they’d do it over Ivanka’s lunch plans?  Besides, I thought it wasn’t a crime if you didn’t intend to do anything illegal?

I sometimes suspect that hidden in Washington, there’s a giant switch. Whenever power changes hands, the switch is flipped and suddenly, all the standards are completely reversed. But Democrats had better think twice before they ride this particular hobby horse over a cliff.  Someone should remind them that if they’re going to start demanding the Trump Administration stringently enforce the rules regarding handling of official emails, there are still several years left to run on Hillary Clinton’s statute of limitations.

How is it that we can have one circuit court's ruling become the law of the land? If this is how it is then why even have a Congress and a president? Are you going to tell me that the DOJ doesn't have enough legal clout to tell the judge his ruling doesn't stand? Who is in control here, Congress and the president, or a group of arrogant, liberal judges? It baffles me that one group of judges can overrule the president and nothing can be done to make that decision null and void? Are you telling me that Trump and Congress can't, or won't, ignore this decision, and do what needs to be done in the interest of national security? They don't have the power to do that? Unbelievable!!!
