We interrupt this newsletter for a shocking announcement:

On Friday, a prominent Republican announced that he is NOT running for President in 2024!

https://www.foxnews.com/media/mike-pompeo-announces-decision-2024-presidential-election

Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that after he and his wife considered it prayerfully for a long time, they decided “this isn’t our moment.” I sympathize and wish him well in whatever he does next. And if it’s any consolation, I can assure him that deciding not to run when it isn’t your moment is at least a lot cheaper than running and finding that out later.

Keep the Newsletter Going: Buy Mike Huckabee’s Book: A Simple Government

Mike Huckabee has continued to be the voice of common sense conservatism, through his television talk show, his radio commentaries, and his lectures around the country. Now he's written a book that sums up the twelve things we really need from Washington to get the country back on the right track. These twelve essential truths will have you nodding in agreement, whether you're a Republican, an Independent, or even an open-minded Democrat. They can help us put aside our differences, tone down the partisan rancor, and return to the simple principles of the Founding Fathers: liberty, justice, personal freedom, and civic virtue. Originally published in 2010, Mike's solutions can help us tackle even the most seemingly complicated of today's problems.

Military analyst Streiff at Redstate.com looks at the classified document leaks and explains why alleged leaker Jack Teixeira is neither a hero nor a martyr, and why some of the alleged dangerous, bombshell leaks really don’t amount to much.

https://redstate.com/streiff/2023/04/14/alleged-leaker-jack-teixeira-is-neither-a-hero-nor-a-martyr-n731373

While some of the leaks are more concerning, what’s even more concerning is how many politicians are using them as a pretext to call for even more government control of speech – and how many “news” media outlets that used to celebrate leakers who exposed government lies are now cheering on the government and siding with the censors.

I heard a comment on Fox News that I thought nailed it: the military lowers standards to attract more recruits, lets over a million of them have access to classified documents, then can’t even control their own people enough to prevent them from leaking secrets. And their solution is to try to control all the rest of us?

Related: Glenn Greenwald on how the government uses authorized leaks to push its narratives or harm disfavored political figures, but hates unauthorized leaks. And the media that used to celebrate leakers as brave whistleblowers and truth-tellers is now helping the government identify and arrest them.

Insurrections

For a party that’s so hysterical over “insurrections,” the Democrats sure do try to pull a lot of them. The latest attempt came on Thursday in Florida, when abortion activists in the state house tried to prevent a vote on the Heartbeat Protection Act by throwing papers from the gallery.

https://www.westernjournal.com/watch-leftists-occupy-another-capitol-throw-items-lawmakers-attempt-shut-bill/

It didn’t work: the bill passed, barring abortion after a fetal heartbeat is detected, except in cases of rape, incest and to protect the life of the mother. Gov. DeSantis already signed it.

And the leftist disruptions continued Friday. DeSantis was speaking at a GOP fundraiser in New Hampshire when two women holding a banner and yelling “Jews against DeSantis” rushed the stage and interrupted his speech. Security guards quickly dragged them away, and I hope they’ll face some kind of charges because this kind of thing shouldn’t be tolerated. It just encourages more of it, and the next ones might be more violent. DeSantis brushed it off with a joke, wondering who would pay $150 a ticket for an event just to get kicked out.

Not sure, but I have a message for them from the GOP: Thanks for the $300!

The EV Bullies

Today’s Democrats don’t see government as a servant of the people, but as a club they can use to bash the people until they do what Democrats want (they’re about as “progressive” as Fred Flintstone in that regard.) Fortunately, the direct bullying approach doesn’t work well, since Americans tend to resent being ordered to do something they don’t want to do and rebel at the polls. But that’s the approach that President Biden is taking in trying to force car makers to convert to electric vehicles that are not ready for prime time, and to force the majority of Americans to buy them, even if they don’t want them and their drawbacks make them somewhere between inconvenient and useless for most Americans.

One of the most egregious examples of caveman liberals swinging the club of big government is found, naturally, in California, where the state has mandated that “35% of new vehicles sold will be zero-emissions cars by 2026, a bar that would rise to 68% by 2030 and reach a 100% benchmark by 2035.” (FYI: they’re not “zero-emissions;” they’re just outsourcing the emissions to the power generating sources, but that’s a separate logical inconsistency.)

https://nextnewsnetwork.com/2023/04/14/new-poll-reveals-americans-not-falling-for-electric-car-propaganda/

However, a new AP poll found that only19% of Americans say they’re “extremely likely” or “very likely” to buy an electric vehicle as their next car. Even a liberal can grasp math well enough to know that 19% is way less than 100%, or even 35%. You can “mandate” that car makers sell X-number of these things all you like, but if there aren’t that many buyers, they’re just going to take up space and gather dust on the car lots. California politicians have no excuse for not knowing that, because it’s exactly what happened the last time they “mandated” that a certain number of cars sold be electric and shoppers said no thanks.

For the record, Americans who drive a lot and have to depend on their vehicles have very good reasons to tell the EV pushers to go whistle up a rope. I often point to stories like this, but here’s the latest: the owner of a Ford F-150 Lightning Lariat electric truck described for Motor Trend what it was like charging it. Hope you enjoy killing over an hour in the parking lot of a 7-11 every time you need to “top up the tank” (or battery, in this case.)

https://www.motortrend.com/reviews/2022-ford-f-150-lightning-yearlong-review-update-3-charging-time/

The argument that EVs are much cheaper than gas-powered cars fails to take into account the $51.70 they paid for the charge plus the $29.83 spent on drinks, snacks and other items while burning time at the 7-11. I know what EV proponents will say: yes, there is an even faster charging technology. They note that the same charge on that would take only...38 minutes.

Frankly, most of us have too much work to do to devote hours and hours of every week to sitting around waiting for our cars and trucks to charge instead of just pumping some gas and getting back on the road in five minutes. Our waistlines also don’t need that many more time-killing snacks. But if you happen to be a leftist politician who likes using the club of government to try to bully citizens, I definitely think you should be driving an EV. Sitting around a 7-11 parking lot eating vegan Slim Jims would be a far better use of your time.

Moving goal posts

The left keeps changing standards and moving goal posts so fast that people who used to be woke are suddenly finding themselves canceled for not being woke enough by the new standards of five minutes ago.

For instance, some of us remember how the writers of the sitcom “Friends” thought themselves liberal heroes, as they pushed the TV envelope by showing interracial dating, Chandler’s transsexual dad, and TV’s first lesbian wedding that got the show banned on some stations. Now, it’s considered so un-woke that the co-creator felt guilted into giving some of her profits to a black scholarship fund while Jennifer Aniston knocked Gen Z audiences for getting offended by the show because people are too sensitive to laugh at themselves now.

https://www.msn.com/en-us/entertainment/entertainment-celebrity/Jennifer-Aniston-says-Gen-Z-are-going-back-to-episodes-of-Friends-and-finding-the-show-offensive-I-dont-think-there-was-a-sensitivity-like-there-is-now/ar-AA19eIYg

Likewise, author Stephen King has become notorious for his vicious tweets about conservatives. He must’ve been stunned to find himself the object of attacks for trying to defend abortion by tweeting the outdated liberal slogan, “If men could get pregnant, abortion would be a sacrament.”

https://pjmedia.com/news-and-politics/matt-margolis/2023/04/14/oops-stephen-king-outs-himself-as-a-transphobe-n1687375

Apparently, not even the imagination of Stephen King is boundless enough to comprehend a world in which everyone is now supposed to believe that men CAN get pregnant.

Finally, mark it down: all those “body positivity” campaigners who insisted that everyone agree that all body types are equally eautiful and healthy (even if it meant ignoring the health dangers of obesity, including COVID susceptibility) are now on the wrong side of wokeness. Because if you’re a “trans” female, it’s okay to hate your body so much that you bind your breasts down with a restrictive garment to mash them flat

https://nypost.com/2023/04/10/lgbtq-groups-supply-chest-binders-without-parents-consent/

It's a circle back to the bad old days when women were expected to wear cinch corsets that deformed their skeletons

https://www.forbes.com/sites/kristinakillgrove/2015/11/16/how-corsets-deformed-the-skeletons-of-victorian-women/?sh=7f8421ce799c

Of course, the binders are only temporary, until you can let a quack surgeon hack off your healthy breasts completely. Progress!!

A grassroots rebellion

There’s a lot of talk about conservative beer drinkers boycotting Bud Light over its endorsement deal with “trans” social media “influencer” Dylan Mulvaney (who’s certainly influenced a lot of people to change beers.) But I don’t think it’s a real boycott, certainly not an organized one, so much as just a grassroots rebellion against such an allegedly down-to-Earth, regular Joe-type brand openly embracing one of the most polarizing figures of the woke culture wars while its marketing VP insults its core customers as “fratty,” aging buffoons. As one Twitter meme put it, Mulvaney “put the ‘boy’ into ‘boycott.’”

I suspect that most beer drinkers don’t really care if the brand that they drink is also enjoyed by people different from them; they just don’t like the maker rubbing their faces in it while telling them they don’t care about keeping their business because they’re out of style.

One way to find out is to see if it makes any difference to sales when customers who have “transitioned” from Bud Light to other beers find out that the top 10 best-selling beers (and/or their parent companies) all have some kind of partnership with LGBTQ groups, like sponsoring gay pride events.

https://www.westernjournal.com/top-ten-best-selling-beers-lgbt-partnerships-one-boycotted-endorsing-trump/

I suspect most drinkers will shrug it off because while those beers did market to that audience, they didn’t do it in a way that blew a raspberry in the face of their non-gay customers. But if you are a beer drinker who’s bothered enough by this to avoid all these brands and you’re looking for something more to your political tastes, you might consider Yuengling beer.  As that article reminds us, while liberals today are whining about how dumb and unfair it is to boycott Bud Light, gay bars in Philadelphia boycotted Yuengling in 2016 just because its CEO endorsed Trump for President. Those bitters they’re tasting are their own hypocrisy.

Clear to me

I think Elon Musk just made it fairly clear where he stands on the issue of giving hormones and surgery to “trans-identifying” minors.

Weekend Laughs

Bud Light tried to ignore all the controversy and tweet a typical “TGIF” meme. It backfired hilariously.

UPDATE

The “trans” teacher in Florida who allegedly threatened to shoot students and commit suicide (and parents weren’t notified) has finally been removed from the classroom.
