Evening Edition - December 31

December 31, 2018

Today is New Year’s Eve, so I wanted to be the first to wish you a Happy and Prosperous New Year!  I thought I’d also use today to catch up with some news from the past week, and to take a look back at 2018.

First of all, let’s dispense with the news you might have missed while enjoying your Christmas break (and no, I will not call it “Winter Break,” as public schools now do – who in their right mind celebrates the coming of winter, other than owners of ski resorts and peddlers of cold remedies?)

The partial government shutdown continues, and it will be interesting to see how long it will continue past New Year’s Day before anyone notices it.  Democrats who think it will only harm Republicans to keep it dragging on should think about whether they really want Americans pondering why so many government employees are considered non-essential when we have a $21 trillion+ national debt.

Of course, the PR arm of the Democratic Party, by which I mean the mainstream media, is running 24/7 negative stories, blaming President Trump for the shutdown and touting polls showing that a majority of Americans want Trump and Congressional Democrats to compromise on funding a border wall -- even though the White House reportedly offered to accept $2.5 billion instead of $5 billion, which is sort of the definition of “compromise.” I wonder how you can possibly compromise with someone like Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, who channeled his inner Taylor Swift in declaring that they will never, ever, ever fund a border wall?

When Democrats rejected Trump’s $5 billion request, claiming it was too expensive, that was laughable enough, considering that to them, $5 billion in tax money is couch cushion change.  It enters the realm of the absurd when they make the same claim about $2.5 billion, which for them is like the “Take a penny” tray at the 7-11 cash register.

As I noted last week, the Democrats’ willingness to shut down the government rather than do anything to secure the border and enforce laws on illegal immigration marks a historic milestone for “The Party of Big Government.”  They’ve actually found something more important to them than government: protecting illegal immigration.

That position might be harder to keep defending, considering the news piling up regarding illegal immigration, which includes:

A man who is reportedly an illegal immigrant with gang affiliations and two previous DWI arrests (yet who was still walking around free in California, of course) was arrested for allegedly killing a sheriff’s deputy in Bakersfield who stopped him on suspicion of drunk driving (incidentally, the deputy was a legal immigrant from Fiji)…

…ICE is releasing hundreds of migrants a day in El Paso, where the city is struggling to deal with housing them and giving medical treatment to those carrying diseases…

https://www.cnn.com/2018/12/25/us/el-paso-immigrants-ice-christmas/index.html

And yet another caravan of up to 15,000 migrants is forming in Honduras, although it’s possible they might be planning to stay in Mexico.

Some more news to catch you up to date:

President Trump personally intervened to make sure the Coast Guard got paid during the government shutdown…

Nancy Pelosi announced plans to form a “Climate Crisis Committee” to combat CO2 emissions after flying thousands of miles to a luxurious Hawaiian resort…

America’s oldest military veteran, World War II vet Richard Overton, died last Thursday in Texas at 112.  He was also believed to be the oldest living American.  A beloved local character in Austin, he was famous for his sense of humor and credited his long life to God, whiskey and his 12 daily cigars.  His advice for having a long life: “Keep living, don’t die.”  I’m sorry he couldn’t keep taking his own advice even longer, but he lived a remarkable, as well as remarkably long, life.  Click the link to read more.

A company owned by Comcast released a pro-abortion video for kids on Facebook that’s getting a lot of well-deserved horrified commentary.  Several commenters had a great suggestion: now that they’ve shown kids a heartless, selfish, oblivious person who laughs about how meaningless her abortion was, how about showing them an interview with someone who survived an abortion?

Having been gone a week, there’s lots of “fake news” to catch you up on.  For instance…

The much-ballyhooed “Trump official” who reportedly resigned in outrage over Trump’s decision to withdraw our troops from Syria was actually the same Obama holdover who personally oversaw sending that planeload of cash to Iran and who was set to leave in February anyway…

https://www.breitbart.com/politics/2018/12/24/trump-fact-checks-media-brett-mcgurk-responsible-for-pallets-of-cash-to-iran/

NBC News, under criticism, finally backed down from its claim that President Trump snubbed the troops by not visiting them for Christmas, after it was revealed that he and Melania did make a secret trip to Iraq the day after Christmas.

https://www.breitbart.com/the-media/2018/12/27/the-thrust-of-this-article-is-no-longer-correct-nbc-news-backs-down-from-fake-news-hit-on-trump-troops-christmas/

NBC tried to finesse its blunder by faulting Trump for not visiting the troops before or on Christmas Day, a distinction that the troops, who welcomed him warmly, seem not to give a flying fig about.

https://www.westernjournal.com/ct/ap-poll-trump-good-news-military-vets/

Then, CNN burnished its reputation as a 24/7 Trump Smear Machine by actually suggesting that airmen at Ramstein Air Base in Germany might have violated military regulations against engaging in partisan political activities by asking Trump to autograph MAGA caps, which he did.  The Air Force replied that there is no rule against airmen bringing personal items to be signed by the President, and they did nothing wrong.

https://www.military.com/daily-news/2018/12/27/air-force-nothing-improper-airmens-pro-trump-merchandise-ramstein.html

The New York Times couldn’t admit that Trump did something positive or brave, so it tried to take attention away from the obvious mutual respect between him and the troops by dragging up an unsourced innuendo about his draft deferment from 50 years ago.  All it proved was that the Times’ slogan, “All the news that’s fit to print,” no longer applies.

https://spectator.org/forever-nipping-at-his-heels/

Finally, no, Trump did not hold out for border wall funding because Rush Limbaugh told him to.

And what would New Year’s Eve be without a look back at some high- (and low-) lights of the previous year?

Sen. Rand Paul released his 2018 edition of “The Waste Report,” his annual round-up of the most egregious wastes of taxpayer money.   They included $10 million to support tourism in Egypt, $50,000 to teach female entrepreneurs in India how to “vlog,” $200,000 to put on plays in Afghanistan; and from the science grants at the NIH, over $2.4 million to study daydreaming, nearly $76,000 to blow leaf blowers at lizards, and $874,503 to study the sex habits of quails on cocaine.  I think the NIH grants are also being handed out by quails on cocaine.

For those with a masochistic bent, News Busters compiled a list of the most hateful media assaults on conservatives.  It was a year of such over-the-top leftist hysteria that a columnist who compared the tax cut to the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 barely made the top 10.

https://www.newsbusters.org/blogs/nb/geoffrey-dickens/2018/12/25/year-review-hating-conservatives

Blogger David Tomlinson proved Longfellow’s claim that those whom the gods would destroy they first make mad by revisiting a year’s worth of insane “Social Justice Warrior” wokeness from various leftwing media figures, alleged academics and other self-appointed moral superiors.  Let's hope the peak madness on display means the destruction of this trend is very close at hand.

Townhall’s Beth Bauman performed a herculean feat of editing by narrowing down Rep.-elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s Top 7 Political Blunders of the Year (this doesn’t even include her suggestion that Joseph, Mary and the Baby Jesus were refugees instead of people being forced to go to ridiculous lengths to comply with the government’s tax laws, which you’d think she’d support.)

Finally, because I know you could use a laugh or two right now, here’s humorist Dave Barry’s year in review column for 2018.  My favorite line: In February, the Chinese space station “plunges back to Earth and, in a worst-case outcome, fails to land on attorney Michael Avenatti, thus enabling him to continue appearing on CNN more often than the Geico gecko.”

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/magazine/wp/2018/12/30/feature/dave-barrys-year-in-review-2018/?utm_term=.bbc0f111440e

Have a happy and safe New Year’s Eve, and I’ll see you in 2019, which I hope will not be a repeat of 2018, which like 2017, was, for way too many people, an endless rehash of 2016!

Re:the Newsbuster article. The left continues to say things about President Trump and conservatives that they, especially the President, lie and lie and lie. They are racist, homophobic--every ist and phobic name they can come up with. Oh, and don't forget intolerant. What the left isn't going to admit--that is what THEY are--and are projecting their actions onto others. Besides, along with still waiting for ANYONE to proved ANYTHING that would constitute a reason for treason or impeachment. Also, waiting for someone to specify exactly what lies they are attributing to the President.

And, for all the praises on pelosi--the sweetheart of the democrat party, spitfire, leader, etc. wonder what they say about her (and chuck) now that they and many in the democrat party are being rode roughshod over by the freshmen congressman quartet. Guess I might have to wait for the 2019 version to find out, cuz I'm not going to tune in to msm to see if they dis this duo.

    Hi Mike,
I have two questions which I'm sure others are wondering the same thing.
    1. When there is a government shutdown, why does the American people suffer? Why doesn't it only affect the people who are causing the shutdown? Withhold Congress paychecks not ours!!!!
    2. Where does all the drug money go that the border patrol confiscates? Why can't all that money fund the border wall?
    Just a thought!
Keep up the good work. We love your show!!

I thought Pres. Trump wasn't going to let any illegals in! Why is ICE letting them out in El Paso?
Also, on the government shut down: I wouldn't mind if the people in Congress and Senate went without their money, but I am friends with a family right here in Charleston SC whose husband, a PhD, works in a gov't lab, and he is out of work for the second time because of government shutdowns. He has four children and a homeschooling wife. It is not fair for them, Trump supporters, to go without income. It is a real hardship on them. They absolutely don't blame Pres. Trump, they blame Pelosi and Shumer. Shutdowns should affect those big wigs in Senate and House....not work-a-day citizens, who are also patriots. I'm sure Pres. Trump doesn't mean for people like this to be hurt.

DEMOCRATS= the anti-American, evil political party-they protect illegal immigrants and desire illegal immigration to continue. They do not want our southern border secured because then they can't give all the illegals benefits and a Democrat voter card ! The Democrats desire and support sanctuary cities and again last week just one more example of a police officer in CA being killed by an illegal immigrant. Governor Huckabee is there statistics of how many felonies including of course murder have occurred in our country by illegals over the past 10+ years? If so, they should be released ! The Democrats could care less about everyday Americans. Wake up America! Sadly, much of conservative America did not wake up in the mid-terms and allowed the crooked Democrats to take control of the House. Maybe in the next two years much of America will wake up to the evil agenda of the Democrats and get out and vote in massive numbers to fight back against their agenda, their voter fraud (boxes of ballots found in support of Democratic candidates), etc.

And another caravan up to 15,000 forming in Honduras with possibly making the trip north. The Democrats must be cheering knowing that if they get across our border, that's 15,000 more they will hand benefits to right along with their Democrat voter card !
WAKE UP AMERICA AND IN 2020 get out and vote for any political party other than Democrats, unless you want to see America ruined and destroyed, then of course vote for a Democrat, they will get the job done in record time !!!

2019 should be a good year for our President, if he will:

issue subpoenas against all democrats and RINOS that want him impeached - they all have something to hide.

Keep the non essential government services
    closed!

    Dear Governor,
I admire and respect you, but I wish you would show better judgement in your criticisms of the research supported by the NIH. Perhaps you could do some research before ridiculing the studies. Laboratory animals are used to conduct research that is applicable to humans before the experiments actually risk people. For example, the end goal of exposing bees to cocaine is not to determine how they are affected, but as a preliminary understanding of the impact on humans. Would you prefer that these initial studies be conducted by bringing in a group of humans and dosing them with cocaine?

Your "cute" closing, that the experiment was designed by "quails" on cocaine, did a disservice to the NIH, to science, to your readers and to yourself.

Research on animals led to terrific advances in the treatment of diabetes. Taken to a logical conclusion, your misplaced complaints about animal research could deprive others of the benefits that can result from this valuable work.

    But I love you anyway!

I am amazed by the number of people who have no idea of how our government works. It seems that many of our younger people do not have any sense of our history or the constitution. I have come across high school graduates that can not read or write written words. They can do ok with printed stuff, but it is sad we have let this happen. Perhaps the most unsettling thing many graduate from school knowing that socialism is great because everyone is equal and has enough to live comfortable regardless of their ability or work status. They have no idea of finances or what Capitalism is except that it is bad. I repeat how did we let this happen. I find these things to be most unsettling.

Last year the Ringling brothers, Barnum Bailey circus closed down, I won't miss it a bit. With the political monarchy we have in Washington it's like having a ringside seat to a three ring circus, the Democrats, Republicans and OUR DULELY ELECTED PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP, MAGA. The next two years will be non stop laughs as the Democrats try everything possible to basically ruin our GREAT COUNTRY. Of the ring announcers are democratically owned MSM. Happy New Year and thank you for making me happy at 3 am this 1st day of the year 2019! I truly love your down-to-earth common sense comments about anything and everything and simply adore your special brand of humor. I am also thankful for your gracious daughter, Sarah Huckabee Sanders. She is a wonderful role model for how to behave with honor, dignity and truth under adverse situations. President Trump is blessed to have her on his team. And one day America will realize we are blessed to have President Trump leading our nation back to common sense, morality and love for our country. We are also blessed to have a beautiful and gracious First Lady, as beautiful inside as outside.

Wishing you and your family a very happy new year filed with an abundance of happiness and love. My favorite thing from 2018 is Trump's decision to withdraw troops from Syria. I am hopeful that he will bring all our troops home from the Middle East. Our original mission ended there years ago. We could build military bases along the Mexico border, with the weapons ranges facing the border. Those areas wouldn't need a wall.

It seems good security sense to keep the Presidents trip to visit the troops a secret. He has already demonstrated a much stronger appreciation for our Armed Forces than the past 2 presidents. Thank you Mr. President and Mrs. Trump.
I am also appalled at the lack of concern for the American people by not funding the wall.
It's not inhumane to keep illegals out. It's just common sense to make them follow all the rules and regulations that every other immigrant has. Maybe the politicians that oppose the wall can pony up support for all those thousands of hungry mouths we'll have to feed. Got a spare room Nancy Pelosi?

Ah, the stories I could tell you about useless research. I used to sell high tech products to researchers. In one case, the " research " involved raising male and female finches, putting one of each in a cage, but there was a partition between he and she, recording his songs...then CUTTING OFF HIS HEAD so they could drain the blood and try to correlate dopamine concentration with song intensity. Imagine - trying to find out if music might make someone - or some critter ! feel better. I'd love it if Mr. Trump would appoint a head of the NIH to direct that government funded research have at least a rat's patoot of a chance of generating something useful for taxpayers.

It's interesting - I had 5 cardiac stents installed today; I'm 63. They found the problem via a test called an echocardiogram. Heart disease is the # 1 killer. Everyone is advised to get a colonoscopy starting at age 50. Colon cancer is indeed nasty, but it ain't # 1 - and an echo is way cheaper than a colonoscopy. I've known several cancer victims; they were always getting their blood tested for cancer " markers ". I asked a different researcher why we don't routinely give a panel of such tests for common cancers; her response - " We don't do a good job of testing in this country ". AMEN !!!

Happy New Years Mr.Huckabee for you and your super hero daughter Sarah ! She defends our President in the classy strong way !
We are so proud of her.

We hope President Trump will have the New Year's speech to the Nation today or tomorrow !
In our opinion it would be great political move where he could show all his accomplishments to the people who don't watch Fox News and are not informed in details about that. He should remind about his new Law about maternity leave and double child's tax deduction for each child which effects every family in US. Somehow nobody ever mentioned that but it effects most of families in US.

Also he should promise Nation the new Healthcare soon for which everybody is waiting for. Without that it would be hard to win in 2020.
Also, we would recommend to show the Nation lack of cooperation with President of Democratic Party now, when Government must be shut down. Democratic Party currently has anarchist and traitor's strategy about the wall. These people don't care own citizens or security of border. Maybe they benefit from drugs coming here ? Actually the whole swamp cares more about their pockets and politics than future of our country. How sad is that.
In our opinion it would be perfect if Mr. President could show the Nation all numbers about one illegal immigrant cost vs. of wall cost. So the people who doesn't watch Fox Channel finally could be informed about all facts in our country. He should show how much money cost sanctuary cities and what that means. Because before this Administration we even never heard about that.
People should hear that previous Administration got tons of money approved by Congress to build the wall, but it never happened. WHY?
Why nobody ever talked about THAT ? People should hear about that too !

In the New Year we wish our President great health, a lot of energy to fight with very unfair opposition which will end with big success.
Our country is so blessed to have the best, smart President than ever and who cares about own citizens and work hard to keep us all together as a one Nation under God despite color of skin. He is not divider like previous President - he is unifier !
    Happy New Year !
