Did you think that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and her fellow Democrats had spent the past year or so claiming that there was no crisis at our southern border? Well, how wrong you are! Maybe you thought you heard them say the phrase “manufactured crisis” so many times that they must be getting a royalty every time it’s mentioned, but no: they never called it a crisis. Who are you gonna believe: Nancy Pelosi or your lyin’ ears?
Granted, she phrased it this way for maximum obfuscation: “We have never not said that there was a crisis.” But using the rule that a double negative adds up to a positive, I assume that in plain English, that means they’ve always said there was a crisis. Which they did not, never.
Naturally, she can’t simply admit they were denying it because Trump said there was, and they have to take up a contrary position to Trump on everything until it become untenable. If he said that water is wet, they’d disagree with him up until the moment before they drowned in the stuff. But she had to add a caveat that somehow puts the onus back on Trump:
Democrats always said there was a “humanitarian crisis,” which is Trump’s fault because of that evil family separation policy. Actually, there’s a crisis because more people are pouring across the border than we can handle, and they’re bringing children with them because they’ve heard that if they do, they’ll be turned loose on the US side instead of being sent back, which is a stupid and dangerous policy that Trump inherited. Also, the reason for separating the children from adults was for their own protection: we don’t want to put children in with adult detainees who might be violent criminals or sexual predators, plus we can’t be sure that the people claiming to be their parents aren’t really coyotes sneaking then in or criminals using them as cover.
Don’t buy that? Earlier this month in McAllen and El Paso, Texas, ICE ran a pilot program of DNA testing of asylum applicants for a few days. It found that nearly a third of them were not actually related in any way to the children they were claiming were theirs.
I eagerly await Speaker Pelosi’s explanation for why this is President Trump’s fault, and how cruel it is to snatch children out of the arms of the strangers who are exploiting them, and how the Democrats never did not say that wasn’t happening.
