PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) has occasionally done some good things to prevent animal abuse, but they tend to get buried in the Aegean Stable of craziness they also generate. Their latest campaign falls under the latter category. PETA has issued a list of suggested new phrases to replace common sayings that might imply cruelty to animals.
For instance, instead of saying, “Beat a dead horse,” we should say, “Feed a fed horse.” Aside from the clunkiness of that, I’m not sure how a dead horse would even feel a beating. They want to replace “Bring home the bacon” with “Bring home the bagels,” which makes no sense because bagels are certainly no substitute for bacon, and no family that brings home bagels would bring home bacon anyway. There are more at the link, along with the predictable snarky responses.
I thought this might represent the ultimate example of PC people demanding changes of language because they’re offended on behalf of others who haven’t complained, since I didn’t know of any animals who actually care what English phrases people use. But then, a friend of mine with a houseful of parrots told me they all heartily endorsed changing “Kill two birds with one stone” to “Feed two birds with one scone.”

Sen. Orrin Hatch also made it clear that he’ll continue bringing home bacon instead of bagels.

It’s been a week of great tributes to President George H.W. Bush, but this behind-the-scenes story might be the one that most reveals what a fine man he was.

The tragic “end-game” of socialism: Venezuelans can’t even afford burials, so they turned to cremating their loved ones…and now, even cremations are scarce due to a gas shortage. Even if you’re dying to escape socialism, you still can’t escape socialism.

In some places, Americans have been seeing a sight they haven’t seen in a long time: gasoline prices below $2 a gallon. These links tell you a little about why it’s happening. Turns out you can drill your way out of a gas shortage. Sarah Palin and Donald Trump: 1; Barack Obama: 0.

Colorado Democratic State Sen. Daniel Kagan is resigning after female colleagues accused him of using a women’s restroom in the Statehouse multiple times and one filed a sexual harassment complaint.
Hey, wait a minute! I thought one of the most cherished ideals of today’s “progressive” Democratic Party was the right for anyone to use any bathroom he/she/xir wanted! Kagan should have just claimed that he feels like a woman inside, then demanded that the women who complained about him resign due to their blatant transphobia.

Sometimes, the pressure on writers and pundits to generate “content” leads them to write and distribute thoughts that they should never even have allowed into their heads. I think it’s safe to say this is one of those pieces:

As media outlets gleefully parsed the body language of the former Presidents and First Ladies at the Bush funeral to try to spot friction with President Trump, a man who certainly had a rocky relationship with Trump painted a very different picture.

A liberal church in Dedham, Massachusetts, sparked controversy (and not for the first time) for using its Christmas Nativity scene to promote a political agenda. They placed the Baby Jesus figure inside a cage, and the Three Wise Men behind a border fence with a “Deportation” sign on it.
Naturally, some people are upset because of the apparent blasphemous disrespect for Jesus. Others are protesting the historical inaccuracy and false analogy (Mary and Joseph weren’t migrants entering Bethlehem illegally, they were there to pay their taxes.) Still others are upset that it inaccurately depicts our border policies in the distorted way the media promoted in order to slam President Trump. I can certainly sympathize with all of that.
But I may surprise you by defending the church’s right to do this. I disagree with it and find it tasteless and repellent, but there’s no question they have a First Amendment right to do it.
Now, I hope the leaders of that church, and all the liberals defending it, will take a similar stand and join me in demanding that conservative Christian pastors also be allowed to express their views on important political issues without fear of reprisal from the government, such as having their tax-exempt status threatened.
