December 7, 2017

When Paul Begala expressed his admiration of President Obama for abusing executive orders to circumvent the Constitution, the Congress and the will of the voters, he famously summed it up as “Stroke of the pen, law of the land.  Kinda cool.”  That could easily replace California’s state motto, which is currently “Eureka!,” which sounds like something “Progressives” might say upon discovering totalitarianism.

This is timely because California leaders are once again fantasizing about using the awesome (and they believe that in every sense of the word) power of the government to force every resident to trade in his or her gas-powered car for an electric car or hydrogen by 2040.  They’ve talked before about deadlines for a certain percentage of cars on the road to be EVs, but those were thwarted by the public’s stubbornness in refusing to buy them.  The government forced dealers to stock them, but they just sat unsold on car lots, gathering dust like last year’s trendy Christmas toy.  So now, California politicians are resorting to their favorite weapon: the heavy hand of coercive government.

Commentary continues below advertisement

California Assembly member Phil Tang plans to introduce a law that would bar the state motor vehicles department from registering any car that emits CO2, starting in 2040.  Only electric or hydrogen cars could be registered.  And if you can’t afford or don’t want one of those?  Well, you’ve obviously made the mistake of thinking that the state cares about your opinion.

In examining the problems with this (beyond the governmental overreach), points out that politicians are no better at pretending to be experts in automotive engineering than they are at pretending to understand environmental science or energy production.  This law would require 99.6% of Californians (by current numbers) to give up their gas-powered vehicles.  There are nearly 35 million registered vehicles in California now, and who knows how many more by 2040.  How will they build enough charging stations?  Where will all the electricity come from?  California already has brown-outs because they refuse to build enough power plants.  Will the greenies who pull the politicians’ strings okay a raft of new nuclear power plants?  What about all the resources it will take to manufacture the tens of millions of EV batteries, and what happens to them when they wear out?  Even with massive state subsidies, 83% of EVs are purchased by people making over $100,000 a year.  How will a state facing chronic budget shortfalls subsidize tens of millions of poor residents in buying cars they don’t want?  Or will they just leave the poor and working classes to rely on public transportation or walking…in CALIFORNIA?

Commentary continues below advertisement

But don’t worry about the details.  Stroke of the pen, law of the land, don’t ya know?  Besides, China is already planning a similar blanket decree; and as the head of the California Air Resources Board said in September, Gov. Jerry Brown “has certainly indicated an interest in why China can do this and not California.”

Well, maybe because China only appears to have a free market economy, while in reality, it’s a dictatorship run by power-mad, communist authoritarians who don’t give a darn what the people want.

Oh, wait…

My son, who earns over $100k, bought two all electric cars from California dealers because the Arizona dealers here would not carry them. His kids love the total electric cars, and one son is saving up to buy a Tesla. However, to get from Phoenix to Show Low, AZ (155 miles) in the mountains where our cabin is, the all electric cars (range 90 miles) can't get there. The new Tesla can get there. The price tag of the new Tesla is out of my financial ability. I will stay in AZ where I can help defeat McCain and Flake and put in true republicans.

I live in California and I love the land a lot, but hate the politics. I think the electric car scheme may be just a way to get more people to leave the state so that the liberals can have it all to themselves. I think they may forget that the people who leave are the ones who paid the taxes.

What EV promoters don't remind people is that 50% of America's energy comes from coal. So let's burn more coal to power all these electric cars! That's got to strike a chord with the greenies! However, we in California don't burn coal (or do we?)--perhaps that is one reason our electricity costs three times what it does in the rest of the country. And, as others have mentioned, more electricity usage certainly means higher electricity prices. As the saying goes, "Just follow the money." Somebody must be going to make a lot of money off of this plan.

Thank you for your always thoughtful and insightful views. This story of the ludicrous behavior of the California politicians in this instance and many others over the years only solidifies my belief that maybe we should just let them create their own country. Then they could find out that the (United States) provide them much more support than they realize. How much does it cost the other 49 to provide them water, billions in aid for their fires, earthquakes, landslides, and other natural disasters and the insurance premiums to cover losses. Plus the greatest benefit to the other 49 would be that we don't have to listen to Nancy Pelosi's ramblings any more.

    Thanks again. Lynn

I've spent 61 of my 66 years as a California resident. The last 20 years has been utterly depressing. Sacramento is a deeper and more insidious swamp than DC. I can see why Jerry Brown would want to emulate China - he's no longer the closet commie he was in the 70's. Ya cain't fiux stoopid!

I was just mulling over all of the scams that the government forced on us in the 21st century....CFL bulbs, they were supposed to last years reducing the strain on the landfills, I never had 1 last even a year; Low Flow toilets, not energy efficient when you have to flush 5 times to get everything down, who even tested these for efficiency?; High Efficiency washers, again, I have to wash my clothes at least twice because the clothes on the bottom are still dry and there are detergent stains on my clothes; recycling, it wastes more resources (water, electricity, gas to move it around) than it justifies; and now electric cars. Absolutely agree that it will be a disaster because they have not thought this through. Where do they think electricity comes from? Ugh, when will we be able to stop this governmental overreach.

Scrap state regulations A-Z or lose out & China wins.

I'm a fourth generation Californian and now have grandchildren who make it six generations of Northern Californians. We live 200 miles from those crazy people in San Francisco and 500 miles from Los Angelos. Yet every time they get a stupid idea my tax dollars go south and we are forced to pay for it and live with the results! The State of Jefferson is a lovely pipe dream but has no leadership. You're exactly right Mike! I was born in San Francisco California in 1964. I lived in the Bay Area most of my life except for two years I moved to Oregon to have my sons. I had to leave California in 1996 because I didn't want to raise my children under such a stupid system where liberals are not ever checked and conservatives are beating up, ridiculed or worse never hired. I will never live in California again but my sister lives in Redding California and they want to become their own Jeffersonian state! What will happen to the tourist industry? Will out of state tourist be turned away at the borders or be required to pick up a rental electric or hydrogen powered rental? Hydrogen? Remember the Hindenburg disaster? The auto industry has made great improvements in fuel tanks for gas and diesel fueled vehicles, what will the learning curve be for hydrogen tanks? The would-be CA Commissars need to pull their cranial computers out of their rectal storage facilities. STUPID! STUPID! STUPID!

It sounds like CA wants to employ Obamacar. These people could not figure out the complexity of running a lemonade stand. It reminds me of the theory that you cannot fix stupidity. They won't be happy until sane people emigrate and the only remaining people will be the people from which we stole the state in the first place and it will be renamed Northern Mexico.

Well said, Governor Huckabee. But what do you expect from a state that elected Nancy "Explosively"? Remember, the tax bill passage was "Armageddon"? And today, the House passage of the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act would "open the floodgates for guns". I guess she thinks it would pave the streets with so many guns that you couldn't drive on a public highway without blowing your wheels off. But how would she know? I doubt she's read a bill since she's been in Congress. Remember she made the world's dumbest statement of this century: "We need to pass this bill (Obamacare) so we can see what's in it"? That's akin to putting a gun to one's head and saying you need to pull the trigger so we can see if it's loaded. Also, are you aware that the congressional pharmacy routinely dispenses drugs for Alzheimers? Can't help but wonder. Keep up the good work.

Thank you for your timely commentaries that never fail to meet the mark of explaining the crazy world around us. As the scriptures say, a time will come when many people are no longer able to reason. I have lost all patience with the leftist media that assaults the very freedom they say they endorse. It is really disturbing to watch the 'tsk tsk' expressions on most of the newscasters and realize that if they could, they would turn over our basic freedom to the government. A republic will last approximately 200 years or so and then will most likely be in trouble. We are witnessing that today as our government of the people, by the people, and for the people struggles to exist. I believe in America because America was founded on principles of free agency coupled with individual responsibility. Christians believe that these are the principles of Jesus Christ and I feel that the reason the pillars are tumbling down is because too many of us have neglected the Christ part of free agency and individual responsibility. Well, on to my tasks for the day, but thank you for providing a place for ordinary citizens to express love of their country without fear. We do need to make America great again !

My comment is to the national concealed carry bill. If passed, it may increase the rights of folks in states that restrict second amendment rights. However, I live in a state with widespread and pretty unrestricted concealed carry. I am concerned about the second part of the bill, the NICS aspects, and the federal government expanding its reach into medical records, counseling records, and other areas. National concealed carry might be a good goal, but I wonder at what price to personal freedom and privacy?

Is it possible for a state to receive a prescription fo anti psychotic drugs because they have lost their collective minds? Sometimes their proposals sound like a comedy sketch. One reason we moved from CA was that we had a child ready to,enter high school and they were giving credit for such things as barbecue and film watching. At that time only one math course (1980) was required for graduation. When we first moved to CA (1965) San Francisco was a very safe place and we walked all over when we went up there for dinner. One can no longer say that. This is true of many cities now, but SF led the way.

Here in Texas, we have to get our cars inspected every year. The state gets this money for roads, bridges, etc. I know California has emission checks, which I guess they get the money. What happens then when there's no emissions to check??? What about all the taxes on gas. Don't they realize how much money they will lose! Tax electric cars, I guess. I can't wait to see Mister and Miss Movie Star of the day get out of a tiny car at their "red carpet" events!!!

Mike, I'm a native Californian (also a strong believer in and follower of Christ, and a conservative), and I am heartsick at what is happening in my state. I know there are many of us here who are praying for our governor and our state legislature, and we are asking the Lord to come against this strategy of Satan that the state is using to shut Christians down, and shut Christians up. These overreaches of power are certainly tools of the devil. Keep sharing, and we'll, in turn, share as well. Praying for you!

I think the whole state of California is crazy. With all the fires I am afraid nothing will be left of that beautiful state and all the fertile land . If they could get rid of Hollywood liberals and government liberals maybe they could get back to normal. 2040 seems so far away to be demanding certain cars on the road . What if you are from a different state ? I guess if you don't have the car they are demanding you will not be able to enter the state ,hurt visitors business .

  • Raymond Reed

    12/07/2017 01:01 PM

    Hi Mike:

My wife and I live in Bakersfield California. We are in our early 70's. The East side of California ( oil and agriculture) are over overwhelmingly Republican. The West Coast of California (Ocean side) are overwhelmingly "ultra liberal democrats". Californians will vote on next year ballots about receding from the United States. The "West Coast" over educated idiots in their liberal halos want California to become its own country. Imagine everything that entails.

After much deliberation between ourselves, we believe California deserves this. Our area is 100% against sanctuary cities. This state is a state of ideologies, wherein the affluent wish to rule over all others. California democrats brag about paying more to the Federal government than Californians receive from the Federal government. Wait until "the country" known as California has to form its own military, such as the Marines, Navy, Army and Air Force. Then pay for its own medicaid ( that is to say for all of those who utilize illegal drugs such as heroine and marijuana and subsequently can't get work and are declared disabled because of the illegal drug use thus being medicaid approved) which has to be better than 5% of this State. Then this new country known as California will have to pay for all of the sanctuary city costs with the access to California from Mexico being an OPEN flood gate. In the news papers we have read where Californian congressmen have stated they do not want "middle class" people here. My wife and I are middle class.

Having been to Mexico, I do not believe there is a "middle class" there. I did see, however, a lot of jack asses and carts. So, in respect to this article about "all electric cars" in this new country known as California by 2040, here is what I predict considering all of the expenses for being a country paid by the elite liberals.

#1: The lower class - all the Mexicans - will be riding jack asses. No more 67 Chevy Impalas - all the low riders are gone. There will be no fast food restaurants because the workers will be getting $50.00 per hour and a big Mac will cost $25.00. Lower Class people can't afford $15.00 fries and a $25.00 hamburger. So, no fast food industry.

#2: Their will be a urgent need for "green burning" transportation. Jack Asses are "green burning" vehicles. Call a Taxi and one will get a Jack Ass pulling a cart with a cover on it. A bottle of water will cost $18.00 and be taxed at 78%. Its very difficult to propel an air craft carrier on dung and urine. So, taxation will be extensive to power these new "green burning" ships. Jets will be known as "pooper doopers" and will fly at 1,000 feet at 100 miles per hour. No guns - just an area for dung storage. The pilots will receive training on how to properly and safely feed the "dung" burning engines all of this dung. Chrysler, Chevrolet, Dodge, Ford and Mercedes will begin breeding and selling jack asses. These special order jack asses will come in all black, black and white, gray, or gray and white. Ford Motor Company will be fabricating Jack ass carts with over 15 different models. Some of these carts will be covered. Ford motor company will get a U.S. Patent on these carts and call them the "Henry Carts".

#3: Street sweepers that once cleaned up dust and dirt from the streets in these wealthy suberbs will be sweeping up dung and urine.
Their engines will be environmentally friendly because they will be powered by "dung".

#4: The middle class Americans ( no longer welcome in this new country known as Californian) will move to one of the other 49 US States
and enjoy freedom from the EXTENSIVE TAXATION of 78% TO SUPPORT the new country of California..

#5: The wealthy in LA, San Diego, Hollywood, the sea coats cities and San Francisco will sell out and move to other US cities because the
smell from all of the dung of the jack asses will be more than they can bare, especially when traveling to their hair salons in their
    electric powered cars.

#6: Lawns: No lawn mowers. A Gardner will have 30 goats or 10 jack asses. It will take 10 jack asses pulling a 40 foot long "jack ass trailer" to transport the 10 jack asses or 30 goats. It will take 2 days per yard up to 1/2 acre to eat down the lawn. Then because of the democratic "dung" unions which represent the gardeners of California, a special dung extraction contractor will be called to come to that residence to safely and environmentally extract the dung from the goats and the donkeys.

#7: POWER PLANTS: All dung will be located at numerous methane burning facilities. At this facility 180 degree air will be injected into the bottom grates of large converter tanks. The "hot air" will mix throughout the dung. The result is methane extraction. Methane, a gas, is lighter than air and as such will gravitate to the top of the outlet piping in the methane converter tank. At which time this methane will be burned in a "dung to methane" burner. The extensive heat will power a water to steam boiler which converts water to steam. The steam will power a G.E. Electric "dung to electric power" turbine.

There will be outages because MORE illegal aliens will be required to be gardners. Their will be a "dung" shortage in this new country known as California. Not enough jack asses.

What prevents folks from registering vehicles out of state if they do this? People always find a go-around for policies they don't like and unless California no longer wants tourists there will still be lots of out of state cars! That they can not make do this.

  • Bernadette Dillon

    12/07/2017 12:39 PM

Dear Governor Huckabee, I give up on my home state of California. The new taxes on fuel. The Kate Steinle verdict. Sacramento and our Congress puts illegals ahead of all Americans and especially Californians. The new tax on gas is money not for roads and bridges but to cover the cost of our open borders and all the illegals here right now. California gives this protected class welfare, food stamps, section 8 housing over our Veterans and Americans. California gives illegals free cell phones, free obamacare, and free education to any and all universities in America. They are also getting tax refunds and free get out of jail cards. They buy and sell drugs, guns and human beings right out in the open here in San Diego. Not one federal agency is doing anything because we are a sanctuary state. There are 30 people living next door to me. 17 of these people are kids. None of them have been immunized and have diseases we have not seen in 50 yrs. Our kids are being exposed to these diseases in the classrooms and our kids are not getting the education they need because these kids do not speak a lick of English thereby slowing down the education process for the rest of the kids. We are not safe in our own homes and there are not enough police to protect us from gangs like MS 13. Dianne Feinstein wants to take away every body's guns except the illegal immigrants. If President Trump would keep his word and send all 48 million illegals in this country packing back to China, Columbia, El Salvador, and Mexico, the USA would not have a deficit problem. We would be back in the black. Numbers don't lie. Per the Congressional Budget each illegal immigrant costs this county $50,000 a year. Times that by 48 million and all it costs is a plane ticket home we are saving money. Send the whole family back to where they belong and make them come in the right way. I am sorry but I am almost 200 grand in debt putting my 3 kids through college. So forgive me because I am sure this whole email sounds not very Christian. I am angry when I attended my sons graduation from University of San Diego and those kids were waving the Mexico flag as they crossed across the stage. Then to come to the people next door with their cars on the front lawn. I want my country back.

If global warming is the concern, then what about warming on other planets? We haven't been living there to mess things up. We haven't been driving around up there. So we have to consider warming caused from the sun.

With advocacy of abortion, homosexual arrangements (notice I didn't call it a marriage), and multiplying gender beyond the male and female that God created --- not abiding by God's design for creation -- we need to consider another warming and whether we're living to avoid it.

Another issue that is not being talked about is the large release of non-native EMF on people from electric cars. There are health problems coming from that EMF.

This is so unthought out. Moonbeam and his crazy ideas. Dangerous ideas. Nobody wants electric cars. They don't cut it for many many reasons. Hydrogen could be better if they got serious about it. Electric cars would clog the freeways out of juice. Can one picture that sight? Our grid couldn't take it. Moonbeam's ideas, like his train ideas, would simply redistribute wealth and raise taxes. Of course that's what he wants...he's power mad. I could go on and on here. But electric cars, forced on us Californians, would be completely insane. Watch for China and Europe to fail and fold because they want this too.

Lost their personal exemption for 65+, AND many have the burden of having to help support their grown kids and grandkids- who can't find decent paying jobs to support their families. Paul Ryan is wanting to cut Medicare next year, too.

Is this population control for the over 65 group?
