I know President Trump has his plate full, what with trying to denuclearize North Korea and being sued by the DNC over the pain and suffering of having lost the election, but I hope he can devote some attention to this desperate situation.
Andrew Brunson is a Christian missionary from North Carolina who’s led a Presbyterian Church in Turkey for 20 years. In 2016, he was arrested and jailed on groundless charges of terrorism and espionage and could face 35 years in prison. His trial finally came up in what’s described as a “kangaroo court.” Supporters say he’s being used as a political pawn to force the US to trade him for an Islamic clergyman they want to charge with being involved in the 2016 coup attempt, something the US government thinks there’s not enough evidence to warrant. Now, Brunson’s trial has been postponed, and he’s been sent to a notoriously overcrowded and dangerous Turkish prison.
Sixty-six Senators have written to the Turkish government to plead for Brunson’s release, and both President Trump and Vice President Pence tweeted statements of support for him. Let’s pray that as was the case with North Korea, Trump’s tweets are only a hint of what’s really going on behind the scenes, and Brunson’s persecution will end very soon.
