ROD ROSENSTEIN'S TESTIMONY; A QUICK REVIEW
In case you missed the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing Wednesday morning, in which former deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein was questioned, here’s Jonathan Turley’s real-time account. It’s necessarily brief, as he had to keep up with the proceedings, but you’ll get the idea of how this went down.
You’ll see that I was mostly on-target in my tongue-in-cheek forecast of what he would say to try to wriggle out of legal consequences. For example, he said he wouldn’t have signed the FISA warrant renewal if he had known about the false statements and underlying misconduct, implying he was misguided by his trust in the people responsible.
He said he didn’t know about the discrediting of the Steele “dossier” and that it had come from the Clinton campaign and Democratic National Committee. Well, of course he didn't!
He said that four judges had already signed off on this material, as if that were a defense. By the time it GETS to the judges, it’s supposed to be signed off as verified information. One of those times, the last one, that was supposed to be done by HIM. It's the judges who get to take this for granted, not him.
He also said he couldn’t recall if he read “every page” of the document he signed. Just what we thought he would say.
If he threw anyone under the bus, even a little, it appears to have been Andrew McCabe, for not being “forthcoming” and instead withholding important information, “for whatever reason." ("Whatever reason"??) Not that he’s accusing McCabe of “misrepresentations.” Huh?
We’ll have much more detail on this tomorrow morning.
TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME = BRAIN-WASTING DISEASE
Proving yet again that Trump Derangement Syndrome is a brain-wasting disease, the media have reacted to Trump naming Antifa (accurately) as a domestic terrorist organization by trying to defend them, mischaracterize them, soft-pedal and downplay their record of violence and radical ideology, and even try to claim they don’t really exist. They’re just some sociology majors on a spree, or white supremacists dressing up as sociology majors to make leftists look bad.
TDS: it’s one heck of a disease.
Think I’m exaggerating? Here’s how a magazine aimed at your kids, Teen Vogue, actually described Antifa:
"Antifa grows out of a larger revolutionary politics that aspires toward creating a better world, but the primary motivation is to stop racists from organizing."
The primary motivation is to overthrow the US government and promote communist revolution, and their primary tactic is assault and intimidation to silence all opposing viewpoints. If your kid is reading Teen Vogue, I have to ask: Why are you still letting that happen?
For those not invested in real estate in Fantasyland, here are just a few underreported examples of what we’re actually dealing with, and if you can explain how any of this helps the cause of fighting racism, I’m all ears:
In St. Louis, David Dorn, a highly-revered, 77-year-old African-American retired police captain was murdered in cold blood while working security and trying to protect a shop from rioters.
This tragedy was widely covered by conservative media, but 24 hours later, his name had yet to appear on the websites of CNN and MSNBC. His death doesn't fit the narrative.
The Richmond, Virginia, Police Chief choked back tears describing how rioters set a house on fire with a child inside and blocked firefighters from trying to reach it. By the grace of God, officers were able to get through and rescue the child in time.
In Los Angeles, a young man impersonating a National Guard soldier was spotted by real Guardsmen and found to be carrying a massive cache of weapons. Take a look at that table full of heavy artillery. I thought leftists believed assault weapons should be banned?
And since it’s almost impossible to keep up with all the acts of mindless violence, particularly when the mainstream media refuse to report them, thanks to Instapundit reader Pierre Legrand for creating this list. Brace yourself:
Apparently though, it’s a lot harder to keep riots a secret than the news media would like. The American people are swiftly figuring out what’s really going on, and which elected officials are impotent and failing in their primary duty of protecting public safety.
That’s why I’m not at all surprised that while the media try to convince us that everyone is OUTRAGED at President Trump for allegedly “escalating the situation” by threatening to use the military instead of trying to mollify rioters (like the Mayors of Minneapolis and New York City have been doing to such sterling success), a new Morning Consult survey finds that 58% of registered voters support using the military to help police deal with violent demonstrators. Only 30% oppose it. This is in spite of generally balanced support for the protesters’ cause.
The American people can tell the difference between legitimate protesters and violent rioters and looters. Why can’t people who are paid six-to-eight-figure salaries to comment on current events figure it out?
Well, maybe reality is finally dawning: USA Today actually ran an editorial arguing that Trump is right, we have to bring these rioters under control. I’m going to go check the weather news to see if Hades is frozen over.
NOT WHAT THEY WERE HOPING FOR
Well, the leftist dimwits in Antifa can’t say I didn’t try to warn them about the suicidal stupidity of their plan to expand their political violence from indulgent, leftist-run blue cities into the gun-owning suburbs.
All things considered, I’d say that the handful of Antifa thugs who tried to stir up trouble in Yucaipa, California, got off easy when they were just beaten up by a group of locals and chased out of town. But they can’t say it was a completely unfriendly welcome. When one of them lost his shoe while fleeing, a local called after him, “Hey, homie! Here’s your shoe, dog!” That's hometown hospitality!
HILARIOUS NEW COLUMN
The bluntly hilarious Kurt Schlichter has a new column on how recent events have shattered illusions as well as store windows.
Many Americans, even pro-gun control liberals, are buying guns because they now realize the government and the police might not be able (or willing) to protect them. It’s also reaffirmed the long-noted illogic of the left's claim that the police are murdering racists, but they’re also the only people who should be trusted to have guns. And it’s shattered the bogus argument that an armed citizenry couldn’t possibly stand up to the might of the government (hotheads with bricks and crowbars are ravaging our cities while the police stand by so powerless that in Minneapolis, they even lost their own police station.)
We’ve also seen that respect for the police requires the police to respect citizens, and the death of George Floyd and the arrests of people for opening their businesses or attending church have undermined mutual respect between the police and public that will have to be painstakingly rebuilt.
Schlichter often manages to be funny while discussing very serious subjects. In this case, the funniest thing of all might be that Democrats really believe they’re cruising for a great election victory because after watching the tragic weakness and incompetence in dealing with rioters by Democrat leaders in blue cities like Minneapolis, L.A. and New York, Americans can’t wait to put them in charge of their families’ safety and security nationwide.
POINTING FINGERS
First, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and New York City Mayor Bill DeBlasio clashed over which one deserved blame for the tragically incompetent response to the coronavirus, and now they’re pointing fingers over who’s to blame for the tragically incompetent response to rioters, Cuomo or DeBlasio. As they say on the Internet, why can’t it be “and” instead of “or”?
SOME REMEDIAL READING FOR OUR MAINSTREAM MEDIA
Reporter Lara Logan, fed up with hearing pompous twits blather that Antifa is a benign social club or that it doesn’t exist, rubs their noses in one of Antifa’s own statements: 10 Points of Revolutionary Action for destroying America, using anarchy to overthrow every American institution and imposing authoritarian, communist rule. Is that clear enough?
