Among all the things in the Mueller report that liberals are pretending to be shocked about, and all the non-shocking things (if you’re one of my regular readers), here’s one you aren’t hearing mentioned much: former Trump campaign foreign policy adviser George Papadopoulos says he’s shocked that the report actually told the truth that he was “illicitly targeted” by spies trying to entrap him not because of Russia but because of his ties to Israel.
Of all the embarrassing partisan media tantrums following the release of the Mueller report, perhaps the most cringe-worthy, and the one that most explains the low trust the public has for today’s media, came courtesy of CNN. Jake Tapper and Wolf Blitzer hosted a 9-person panel that was such a deranged, conspiracy-mongering screechfest that even other members of the media commented on what a “meltdown” they were having.
That link includes some of the best comments, including a tweet from me. One comment I’d like to add was from a viewer in an Internet forum. It summed up CNN and about 90% of today’s media perfectly. The poster wrote that at one point, Tapper tried to guess what conservatives would say about some aspect of the report, and observed that if they’d bothered to have any conservatives on their crowded panel, they wouldn’t have had to guess.
If you ever want to play a fun political game, watch a few press appearances by prominent Democrats and see if you can guess the word/phrase that tested the best in their focus groups when they were scripting their “reaction” to some story that hadn’t happened yet. It’s not hard; it’s the word/phrase that they all repeat, whether it makes any sense or not.
In the latest case, it’s obvious that even though Attorney General Barr’s statement on the Mueller report and answers to reporters’ sometimes asinine questions were the epitome of a sober, serious, professional adult laying out the facts in plain language, Democrats had settled on the word “spin” to describe it the day before, so they all said “spin” until our heads spun.
Not to take away from the 24/7 media coverage of the incredibly important news that President Trump might have thought about obstructing a long, expensive, distracting investigation of something he knew he didn’t do (but didn’t obstruct it), but here’s some far less important news you might want to know:
This week, initial jobless claims (applications for benefits after losing a job) fell to their lowest levels since September, 1969. There were just 192,000 jobless claims nationwide, which is 5,000 lower than last week, which was the lowest since November, 1969. These past two weeks have marked only the first and second time jobless claims have dropped so low in 50 years, and the US population then was less than two-thirds of what it is now (but hey, let’s impeach the President who presided over it for being angry that he was hamstrung and slandered over false charges.)
As the article at this link notes, for perspective, the last time there were so few people applying for unemployment benefits, the Beatles’ “White Album” was #1 on the charts, and Dave Thomas had just opened the first Wendy’s. Also, people still trusted the news media. Wow, that WAS a long time ago!
The latest word on the Notre Dame Cathedral fire is that investigators now believe it probably started with an electrical short circuit.
It would be good to settle this question quickly before conspiracy theories can take root. That’s not helped by the fact that a man was just arrested in New York for attempted arson, reckless endangerment and trespassing after he was caught entering St. Patrick's Cathedral carrying two cans of gasoline, lighter fluid and butane lighters. He’s also been arrested earlier this week at a New Jersey cathedral and had booked a flight to Rome.
Oh, and here’s a surprise: he’s a college philosophy teacher and a Ph.D. candidate at the City University of New York. The type of folks who enjoy figuratively torching Christianity and Western civilization might be turning to doing it literally. That’s why my philosophy is “Be very careful which school you send your kids to.”
Immutable laws of life: Just as people sweat more the higher the mercury rises, so do people flee more the more leftists are in the government. From Venezuela to New York to California and all points in between, the further left the government, the more people are voting with their feet.
Latest case in point: Chicago. New figures show Cook County’s population has declined every year for the past four years (and that’s not just because of the murder rate.) Three surrounding counties that had been growing also showed a drop in population from 2017 to 2018. Among America’s 10 largest metro areas, the biggest population gains were in Dallas, Houston and Atlanta, while only L.A., New York City and Chicago lost population. Percentage-wise, Chicago’s population loss was more than twice that of New York’s and nearly five times that of Los Angeles.
Reasons given by residents for leaving Chicago include “high taxes, government corruption, crime rates, economic instability, long commutes, an overall rise in the cost of living and the weather.” The only thing on that list that you can’t plausibly blame on Chicago’s government is the weather, even though Democrats are trying to blame bad weather on Republicans.
Chicago hasn’t had a Republican mayor since 1931, but voters recently decided to try fixing some of the Democratic corruption by electing socialists to the city council. That’s like trying to cure your unhealthy smoking habit by switching to heroin. The good news is that if you are in a heavily-leftwing city and are foolhardy enough to open a business, there’s still a killing to be made in U-Haul franchises. That is, if you can get past all the regulations to open it and shield any of your profits from the tax collectors.
I’m always looking for common ground with people whose political views I oppose. So when I heard that radical left Democratic Rep. Rashida Tlaib reportedly urged her supporters to join her in on a hunger strike until ICE is abolished, I had to add my ringing endorsement to this plan. I am absolutely on board with people who don’t want America’s borders protected refusing to eat as long as ICE is in existence. I’m even willing to help: if they have any fried chicken or peach cobbler tempting them in the fridge, I’ll be happy to take it off their hands. Keep raising those fists to the Man, as long as you still have the strength!
Oh, wait…Tlaib’s spokesman now says she was not actually calling for a hunger strike, but rather stating that "she knows of folks who have done" them. Sounds like the type of 180 you pull once lunchtime arrives. Anyway, you can go to this link, see the video, and decide for yourselves.
Snopes.com keeps “fact-checking” satirical stories from the Christian conservative humor site, The Babylon Bee, such as one about Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez going on “The Price Is Right” and guessing that everything is free (Ruling: False - but only in the literal sense.) So the Bee’s editors decided to turn the tables by giving its humor-deprived monitors a merciless mocking. First, there was this:
This was followed by a piece listing five more shocking stories that Snopes.com fact-checked for accuracy. They include determining whether Nicolas Cage really stole the Declaration of Independence, whether Donald Trump ghostwrote Hitler’s “Mein Kampf,” and whether roadrunners really can enter into murals painted on the side of cliffs by coyotes.
Read them all, it’s hilarious stuff. And because they’re apparently the only people in the world who need this disclaimer:
Attention, Snopes.com: Nothing about this article is true. You don’t need to fact-check whether or not you really fact-checked these stories. All humans from Earth know that these are a thing we call “jokes.” You should also know that you are what is known as “the butt of the jokes.”
PS – As long as I’m talking about the Babylon Bee, this story about CNN’s reaction to the Mueller Report is just too funny not to share:
Late-breaking news from 1932: The New York Yankees have yanked Kate Smith’s iconic recording of “God Bless America” from the 7th inning stretch, where it’s been played since 9/11, after they were “were made aware of Smith’s history of potential racism.” This hinges on shocking new reports that Smith recorded a couple of racist minstrel-type songs in the 1930s and endorsed a “Mammy” doll in 1939 (for historical context, which I know doesn’t matter anymore, that was the same year “Gone With The Wind” was released. Hattie McDaniel became the first African-American Oscar winner for playing “Mammy.” The Academy had to make a special deal to get her in because they held the Oscar ceremony at the Ambassador Hotel, which barred black people.)
The linked Daily News story also claims that Smith made a “video” of one of the songs. I assume that refers to a musical number in her 1932 movie, “Hello, Everybody.” Funny how they expected her to predict and abide by 2019 standards of racial sensitivity when they can’t even be bothered to find out that there were no such things as “music videos” in 1932. Kate didn’t have a crystal ball, but her PC critics at least have Google and history books, not that they can be bothered to consult either one.
The article claims that the Yankees are “investigating” these claims and “acted swiftly” (“Swiftly?” The two songs they’re upset about were recorded in 1932 and 1939!) to replace Smith’s “God Bless America” with a new version. How about one called “God Save America”?
It appears that in the same way the left is trying to erase historical figures such as Robert E. Lee and Thomas Jefferson, they’re now turning to entertainers whose works from decades ago don’t match current PC standards. And judging from their treatment of Kate Smith – banning her greatest recording because she cut a couple of bad obscure songs years earlier – are we now expected to erase entertainers’ entire careers if even one or two of their projects offend current sensibilities? If so, we can say goodbye to hearing or watching anything ever made by any entertainer who ever wore blackface, which includes Al Jolson, Eddie Cantor, Mickey Rooney, Jerry Lewis, Judy Garland, Fred Astaire and the great black vaudeville star, Bert Williams. And don't forget, the Beatles cut that sexual abuser song “Run For Your Life,” so we’d better burn their entire catalog, too.
Say, come to think of it, Kate Smith’s racist recordings were way back in the 1930s. But it took the New York Yankees until 1955 to hire their first black player, Elston Howard. That was eight years after Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier, and 16 long years after Kate Smith’s Mammy doll endorsement.
I am shocked – SHOCKED! - to be suddenly informed of this news that the Yankees are such a blatantly racist organization! I call for all New York Yankees games to be canceled until this late-breaking revelation can be fully investigated!
In the meantime, while the Yankees are on hiatus, let’s all spend some time reading the history of Kate Smith’s rendition of “God Bless America” and the many ways in which it (and she) promoted patriotism and unified Americans. Let's learn more about this national treasure that we are being harangued into discarding.
