And another shoe drops: nine days after the Southern Poverty Law Center shockingly fired its founder, Morris Dees, SPLC president Richard Cohen has tendered his resignation.  Cohen said, “Whatever problems exist at the SPLC happened on my watch, so I take responsibility for them.”  That sounds noble and admirable, unless you understand just how awful those problems are and how long they’ve been going on and how scandalous the cover-up of them has been.

I’ve been talking about the descent of the SPLC from genuine civic rights champion to hypocritical, slanderous fundraising machine for several years now in various media, but the issues actually stretch back decades.  The use of hysterical emails to panic donors into sending money to fight a nonexistent rising tide of “hate groups,” the vast amounts of money stockpiled (including in foreign accounts), and the false labeling of innocent, traditional faith-based groups as anti-gay “hate groups” to justify the fundraising are just the parts that were easy to see.

What’s been hidden all this time by the SPLC’s leadership, its compliant staffers and a sycophantic media is the shocking (and ironic) amount of racial discrimination and sexual harassment taking place behind the walls of its expensive, gleaming headquarters, dubbed by insiders as “The Poverty Palace.” The SPLC still refuses to specify the “conduct issues” behind Dees’ firing and Cohen’s resignation, dodging questions they would never allow conservative nonprofits to dodge and issuing fuzzy statements about moving on and “healing.”  Sorry, but before you can heal and move on, you need to expose the rotten heels to daylight.

The curtain was finally ripped off this week when The New Yorker (surprisingly) published a mea culpa article by former SPLC employee Bob Moser.

Moser describes how he went to work there, besotted with the PR image of the SPLC, thinking he was joining a group of scrappy liberal underdogs taking on powerful racist groups.  Instead, he discovered it was, in his words, “a highly profitable scam,” and a “monarchy” run by Dees and Cohen.  The white males at the top were lavishly compensated, young women were warned of Dees’ reputation for hitting on female staffers, and the important positions were held almost exclusively by white people while blacks were only in administrative positions and pointedly referred to themselves as “the help.”

Moser also describes how employees were aware of the hyperbolic fundraising pitches to gullible liberals about the ever-rising tide of hate groups.  They would exchange cynical catchphrases such as “Until justice rolls down like dollars” and “The SPLC: Making hate pay.”

We now know that Dees’ ouster followed multiple staffers signing letters protesting Dees’ longstanding mistreatment of minority and female employees, whose complaints had been ignored, covered up and retaliated against.

So now, the shocking truth about the SPLC (or even more of it) is finally out.  My question is, why was it not out sooner?  Mr. Moser writes that he left the group in 2004.  But it took him 15 years to write this article?  And what about all the other dozens of employees who witnessed and suffered this greedy, hypocritical, reprehensible behavior over decades and said nothing?

Moser mentions several media outlets that wrote of these problems in the SPLC as far back as 1995.  Why didn’t they get wider coverage?  When tech giants such as Facebook and Google started using the SPLC’s “hate group” list to ban conservative Christian users, why were they treated as a reliable, respectable source and not given the same scrutiny to which they subjected others?

I am sorry for the people who were mistreated over the decades by this disgraced organization, but by keeping quiet and allowing this behavior to go on for decades while those at the top vastly enriched themselves, both at the expense of deluded liberals who thought they were supporting a noble cause and innocent conservative Christian groups who were defamed, nobody’s hands are clean here.  But a good first step would be for the tech giants that have empowered the SLPC as cover for partisan censorship to thoroughly wash their hands of them.

I was an Oregon State Trooper in the early 90s when Morris Dees came to Oregon to help prosectue some white men who beat to death an African man with a baseball bat.
I was in charge of the protection of Oregon’s Governor and on the SWAT Team. The Governor requested I provided protection for Dees while he was in Oregon. So I took some SWAT guys and did just that.
I liked Dees and thought the SLPC WAS A WORTHWHILE GROUP, and I think it was at the time.
But, just like Socialism, money corrupts. The leaders become entitled and lose focus of the original goals. They begin enriching themselves and take advantage of their perceived power, or actual pwer that can come with money.

A den of corruption? Yep that "den of iniquity" is imploding on itself. they are filled with hatred for everyone but themselves. Let them crumble and then prosecute for their crimes. Show them the same mercy they and the rest of the left showed DT: NONE Time to take the gloves off and go after each and everyone with BB bats and steel pipe. This cannot go unpunished. They won't stop punishing us.

The liberals have been doing this disgusting type thing since the days of Franklin D. Roosevelt. These left wing liberals always sneak out the back door taking some blame even if it is not the truth about why the really left. Wait for the excuses that Schumer and Pelosi will make on the way out of office. Just look at what Feinstein and Pelosi have done for themselves and their husbands with the US tax dollars. They know how to cover their foot prints. Wake up you free loaders the day is coming when there wont be enough tax dollars to support the liberal pay offs to buy the votes of those receiving the so called free stuff that keeps the liberals in office.

How long must we wait until actions lead up to the indictment of Comey, Clinton’s, Obama’s crew and so many others that have broken so many laws?
People are beginning to think it will never happen- Pres Trump’s new AG-another loser? He has not done anything.

Thank you for this story, and bringing this to light. It makes me sick that this sort of hate machine is still operating.

Additional comment: I made a typo in my comment. Please correct it. I said we had almost 200 people at our last meeting in March. That is incorrect. I meant to type: almost 100. We had maybe 95 or so people there to hear Sheriff Andy Louderback. We are very pleased with that number because our average attendance is more like 60 to 80 attendees. Carolyn Korkmas

I would like to ask your permission to reprint today's article about the Southern Poverty Law Center. I am editor of the TFIRE Newsletter. Our organization, Texans For Immigration Reduction & Enforcement, Inc. has been named by the SPLC as a hate organization, and we are anything but that. We are made up of almost 200 members who are very concerned about what is happening to our country. TFIRE was founded in the early 1990's by a Mexican man who had become a U.S. citizen and he resented the influx of illegals coming to the United States. We are made up of mostly Christian Republicans, but we accept anyone who believes as we do about immigration regardless of party, race, or religion. We are located in Houston TX. We meet 10 times a year and almost 200 people attended our March meeting. Our speaker was well-known Sheriff Andy Louderback who advises President Trump on Texas border issues. We hope you will allow us to reprint your article in our April issue of the TFIRE Newsletter. If you will give us a mailing address, we will send you a copy of our newsletter.

Off subject just a thought “how can there be obstruction of justice, when there’s no Crime ?”

  • rodney burke

    03/26/2019 01:24 PM

contraire. What did Barr say. no evidence of obstruction. How can he obstruct when he told Comey to investigate, McCabe admitted under oath, there was no obstruction. At what point did Trump obstruct ANYthing? At NO point. Shiffty has zero evidence. Tell kerosene you don't investigate to find a crime. You investigate AFTER you find a crime. we have a bunch of criminal democrats wanting to investigate to FIND a crime, There IS no crime except in the lib party. And there is enough of those to investigate for 20 years. It was how long after the firing of Comey that the probe went on? and can ANYONE prove any obstruction? Nope, Because they are idiots and mentally ill.

So how do we get these powerhouses to undo their damage? -- "Facebook, Google, and Twitter have hired the Southern Poverty Law Center to identify hate groups for them. ?"--We need to vote GOP so the 2020 House can pass bills protecting Christianity, Conservatives, and fix free speech and illegal immigration. We need to line up voters and people to monitor the polls in 2020 because we now know for a fact the Democrats register illegals and dead people and "find" votes to get their candidates elected. They even howl when write in signatures do not match the original signature and the votes are set aside. Very corrupt. We need to stop looking the other way to keep the peace and nail them.

The same thing will happen to the splc that happens to the democratic party when they get in trouble... not a damn thing!
The dry creek media won't report on it cause it's the same crap they do, lie, spread false
information, distort the truth... Jesus can't come soon enough!

Thank you for another OUTSTANDING article that needs to be shared with all Americans. Unfortunately, our government and media at all levels have enough corrupt officials to pick and choose on who they will investigate, enforce the law or just publicly destroy.

My dear brother died 5 years ago, and as my sisters went through his things, they determined that memorials could be sent to SPLC. Even that long ago, SPLC was increasingly committing what I consider hate crimes against more and more conservative groups. I love my brother dearly, but in no way could I send money to this travesty of an organization.
