Yesterday, Sayfullo Saipov, 29, a native of Uzbekistan who moved to the United States in 2010, allegedly rented a truck from Home Depot and drove it onto the city’s busiest bicycle path, mowing down bikers and leaving eight people dead and a dozen injured. He got out and shouted, “Allah Akbar” before being shot by police as he tried to flee, then was taken to the hospital for surgery. A note left near the truck said he’d done it in the name of ISIS, and New York Mayor Bill DeBlasio declared it a terrorist attack. In fact, it’s the deadliest terrorist attack in New York City since 9/11. So far, it’s believed he acted alone.
Saipov had most recently lived in New Jersey and worked as an Uber driver. A friend expressed shock, calling him a friendly guy who never expressed any radical beliefs. But ISIS has long called on sympathizers to use our lax immigration system to come in as sleeper agents, and they’ve recently been encouraging them to launch vehicle attacks on pedestrian crowds, like the one in Nice, France.
