Evening Edition - February 5

February 5, 2020 |

In recent years, the term “fact-checker” has come to mean “partisan spin doctor pretending to dispense objective truth.” But President Trump made their job very hard with his SOTU Address. While Democrats are accusing him of lying from force of habit, he made a point of couching his accomplishments in verifiable statistic form, such as saying that the unemployment rate is the lowest in over 50 years, and that we’ve added 12,000 new factories after losing 60,000 under the last two Administrations. So when this fact-checking team looked into his claims, they had to admit he was telling the truth.

In fact, surprisingly, he actually understated one accomplishment: "Since my election, the net worth of the bottom half of wage earners has increased by 47%, three times faster than the increase for the top one percent." Actually, according to the latest numbers from the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, the wealth of the bottom half has increased by 55.86%, which is 3-1/2 times the increase for the top one percent.

Of course, this didn’t prevent Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer in the Democratic response from claiming that the economy is only “strong for the wealthy who are reaping rewards from tax cuts they don’t need” while it “doesn’t work for working people.” Those tax cuts helped fuel the economic boom that created the job creation that led to low unemployment that’s forced employers to increase wages and benefits to attract good workers. Electing Democrats who’ll raise taxes would undo all that. Besides, it’s an objectively false claim (see paragraph directly above.) But claiming that Republicans only care about the rich and want workers to suffer is all that Democrats know how to do, so they’ll just keep doing the same thing despite what Trump does or what those lying research numbers say.

Sadly for them, for once, fact-checkers verify that (to quote “Seinfeld”) Trump’s accomplishments are real, and they are spectacular. He wasn’t just bragging. Besides, it’s not bragging if you can really do it.

Some Democratic Iowa Caucus results are finally starting to trickle out. With 71% of precincts reporting, Pete Buttigieg is narrowly leading Bernie Sanders in the delegate race by 26.9% to 25.2%. Warren is trailing at 18.4% with Biden at 15.4%, barely edging Amy Klobuchar. Sanders leads in the popular vote. So the top two Democratic contenders for President of the United States so far are a small town mayor and an elderly socialist, with Joe Biden a distant fourth. Biden’s also not strong in the next two states, but hopes to win in his “firewall” of South Carolina. However, recent polls show his support is falling there, too.

One of President Trump’s first reactions, when he was accused of trying to get Ukraine to investigate the Bidens because Biden would be his opponent in 2020, was to say he never thought Biden would be the nominee. It would be ironic indeed if the one person who actually got anything right in the Iowa Democratic Caucuses was Donald Trump.

PS – While the media are trying to make Republican reactions to the Democrats’ debacle in Iowa the story instead of the debacle itself or the rise of open socialist Bernie Sanders, political strategist James Carville has been around long enough to know not to believe your own blather. And he’s straight-up terrified at the suicidal impulses of his own party.

The Department of Homeland Security has announced travel restrictions on six new nations due to their failure to provide security criteria to prevent terrorists from entering the US. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi blasted the move, claiming it was “discrimination disguised as policy” and would bar 350 million people from predominately African nations from entering the US. DHS fired back that the actual number of people affected is approximately 12,400. If 350 million people wanted to come here, that would mean the entire populations of all those nations coming to the US and more than doubling our present population. Which I’m sure would be fine with Nancy, as long as they all vote Democrat.

The conservative satirical news site The Babylon Bee had a story on Monday’s Iowa Democratic Caucuses that I think fits this situation perfectly as well.

Tweet of the Day! Former Obama official and MSNBC analyst (natch!) Richard Stengel tweeted about the Dems’ Iowa Caucus fiasco, “The two guys happiest with the Iowa results are Donald Trump and his pal Vladimir Putin. Please don't subscribe to conspiracy theories launched by either one of them. Simple human incompetence is almost always the right explanation.” Putting aside that Stengel cited the debunked Russian collusion conspiracy theory to denounce conspiracy theories, the Wall Street Journal’s James Taranto offered the perfect response:

“’Simple Human Incompetence.’ Now there’s a campaign slogan.”

Super Bowl Post-Script: Jay-Z denied that he and wife Beyonce were making any kind of political statement by sitting during the National Anthem. He says they co-produced the show and were just absorbed in making sure everything was running smoothly (the mics, camera angles, etc.)

However, he added, "I didn't have to make a silent protest. If you look at the stage, the artists that we chose, Colombian (Shakira), Puerto Rican, J-Lo…we were making the biggest loudest protest of all." So in case you thought they forgot to add a lot of politics to an inappropriate place, rest easy. And here I thought the halftime show was just a protest against good taste and public decency.

Finally, Mitt Romney buys the load of Schiff. He's still upset he choked against Obama & begged for Sec of State but was passed over by President Trump(thank goodness!). He makes a fine Democrat Senator for Utah. I sure miss Orrin Hatch who was a statesman. Utah deserves better. We all do.

I'm not into sports, so I didn't watch the Super Bowl. However, I tuned in at halftime just to see what the show would be like. My husband and I were thoroughly disgusted by Shakira (we'd never heard of her) and her "dancers" that we changed the channel after about 2 minutes. You're right: it was definitely a protest against good taste and public decency!

If President Trump didn't do any thing wrong, how could he be acquitted of any thing??

Hi Mike, i believe that we are really in a war, not with physical humans, but with evil that influences these people. It helps make me realize that we need the Lord God more than ever.

    On "fact-checkers": https://www.bbc.com/news/world-51381015

One of my more "progressive" friends tweets out practically every negative article that the BBC has about our American president, and posted this one immediately after the SotU address. I just get so tired of things like that, and I would love to see a point-by-point analysis of liberal fact-checks. Who checks the fact-checkers? Well, not to shirk my own duties, but I just don't have the resources for that kind of work; and besides, it's a full-time job responding to liberal falsehoods (not to mention she tweeted "fact-checks" from several other MSM sources, gleefully educating people like myself on how evil Mr. Trump is). Sometimes, I'd just love to see a blast of truth tear apart one of those articles.

You're a busy man. I think I'm not really asking; I'm just venting.

What is scariest of all is even while we celebrate the huge accomplishments of our President while Nancy Pants has a meltdown, the other side is actually celebrating too. They honestly think they won after the SOTU! Please vote! We need everyone who believes to vote! Do your God given duty and vote!

During SOTU the Democrats n especially Nancy Pelosi were absolutely embarrassing. They are extremely unAmerican. They all need to be replaced in November with a trump supporting republican. One more thing Mitt Romney needs to go. He’s a backstabbing sob. Thank goodness Trump didn’t pick him for any jobs.

I couldn't help but notice that Gov. Whitmer explained that the Democrats and the Michigan and Wisconsin law makers are doing a great job of throwing away the money they say their population doesn't have by throwing more money at public education rather that try to find the true problem behind the poor performance of the public schools. When people in most any job are given a life long job without a chance of termination, this is what you get! This isn't against the educators, it's human nature!

I never read this newsletter until Thursday morning and, I had not finished reading tne first paragraph when I received a phone call from the national weather service that my home address was in a tornado warning area and for md to evacuate my home....which is not possible!

I am still in a nightmare storm...ALONE save with my Lord....and as I am having to deal with a REAL catastrophic situation of this earthly life it emphasizes the absolute demonic evil that the Democrats have CREATED such a catastrophic situation...

Well, Shucks! The best response to the Super Bowl is to boycott the NFL, which me and my family have been doing for several years now.
Mitt Romney is an establishment Republican, which means he is not distinguishable from the Marxist-Democrats.
President Eisenhower was an aniti-Federalist, a constitutionalist, as is President Trump. You may be too young to remember when Gen. Eisenhower declared his candidacy for President, it was published that he would be a Democrat. A few days later, it was published that he would be a Republican.

I remember first watching Orrin Hatch some 20 years ago. I agreed with most of what he was saying, but, especially in the last several years, wondered what pot of kookaide he had drank from on some of his stances. I always wonder--where we would be today if romeny had won the election in 2012. Frankly, at the end of the run, just before the elections, I was not impressed by some of the things he and ryan were saying, and even more so after they lost. Would we have been as bad off as we were with obama winning?

I do have to chuckle at the hapless democrats who, when trying to explain THEIR snafus and shortcomings, as usual will try to blame the President--oh, and add a little reference to Putin just to make it sound good!!! LMAO!!!!

But, really. WHO buys the left (and the extreme left) poppy cock about having to improve employment, job opportunities, everything President Trump has already made great inroads into improving. And, WHO is going to buy in to having taxes (and it WILL be on Mr and Ms Everyday American) raised to beyond sustainability? I know, there are those who are only looking for FREE, and who can't be bothered about who will foot the bill. Those who are sure wanting ocasio and friends to assure them a monthly income, work or not, ability to work or not--oh, don't forget they'd still get all their welfare entitlements to supplement that income. IMO, even FDR and for sure JFK would be wondering where the democrat party went wrong.

I just pray that ALL Republican voters get to the polls in November. It looks like there is a good momentum for the President to be re-elected, but it takes EVERY vote, no one can say, well, I'll just let everyone else get out to vote, there'll be enough. PLUS, because there IS voter fraud, and you can believe it will be more rampant with all the illegals being given drivers' licences--we have to get out and make sure we can overcome all that. Because I do think the democrats (and I'm not talking about everyday democrats, or even all congressional democrats) will be doubling and tripling down to do WHATEVER IT TAKES to prevent the President from getting re-elected. There was a mention about how long it's taking to get the tally in Iowa sorted out, and if there will be kinks like this for the Presidential election. And, I think, that, of course, would be on a larger scale, and take longer to sort through--meanwhile, Donald Trump would continue to be President as long as it takes. And we have seen, he doesn't let garbage get in the way of distracting him from the job at hand---making America great again, and to KEEP it great!!!

I used part of your letter about fact checking to put someone in their place, and I have to admit it felt wonderful, Thank You. Probably won't make a hill of beans difference because of their selective hearing but....I tried. I have to learn not to answer or let them get under my skin. I've never been politically inclined to debate garbage but there is just something about the dirtiness of the left that has lit a match in me. I just can't stand to see someone trying to do so much good for our country be pounded constantly. It really doesn't matter, Jesus is coming soon. I knew the moment they decided to butcher children....He is using President Trump to confound mankind, and expose Washington, and give us time to get our lives in order. We are watching, waiting, and keeping our lamps filled with oil for the bridegrooms return. Have a Blessed Day, Karen

President Trump just stated (at the Prayer Breakfast) that it's not true when someone (Pelosi) said they pray for me! (He stated before when she made the announcement that she prays for him, that he doesn't believe it) Please tell him we're sure Pelosi prayed that he would be impeached; be politically destroyed some way; etc.! Our enemy uses "prayer" against those they hate!

Thanks to Pelosi and D-RATS for putting on display just how corrupt dishonest and anti American that mob feasting on American tax dollar is. Most people understand politicians for the most part are 85% dishonest and 15% corrupt the two are interchangeable not much left for decency. President Trump vision to drain the Swamp is the most difficult issue today. I wish he didn't inherit so many corrupt issues but they need to be addressed. I am glad he is a tough guy the Presidency has no room for the meek the President deals with cowards that hide behind the power of the offices that the people granted the Left has turned the power against America and is hiding behind the power.Take the prefix of Senator or Rep.away from these people what you have left is toxic waste. Drain this Swamp Donald Trump MAGA.

Another great read, Governor! I saw the statement Romney gave for voting for article 1 of the impeachment saying he was "deeply religious" and he must do the right thing because he had taken an oath before God. Ok, I get that, but is he saying that the other Christian senators are not as "religious" as he or they didn't also pray for guidance before voting? I heard it said on TV that this was the first time a person of the same party as the President voted for impeachment. I then wondered if this was some plan of his to go down in history because he's never going to be President, that's for sure!

On what should and could have been one of the most exciting days of her young life, Shaniyah Davis, the little girl who was awarded an opportunity scholarship to attend a school of her choice by President Trump during the STOU address will remember that the House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi, and other House Democrats just sat stone faced while the President made his presentation to Shaniyah. I do wonder what Shaniyah will think one day when she looks back on this moment in time. Having said that, I wish Shaniyah all the best that this opportunity has to offer.

The Michigan gov. in her response speech spoke of a teen who grew tired of the potholes in his street and filled them in! This is a Democratic run town with a Dem Gov and a private citizen has to fill the potholes! Perfect reason to vote Republican

I found it astounding that Mitt would say he needed more evidence, did he not get to read the transcripts of the phone call itself? Why did he need "hearsay" from people who claim to know the details. After all it was all about the phone call was it not? I think Mitt the RINO needs to retire. I hope Utah will help him do just that!
