Running against the economy

May 6, 2019

Listening to the Democratic leadership these days, I keep finding myself torn between anger at their refusal to act like adults and put the good of Americans before their party and pity that they have allowed mindless partisanship to reduce them to the point that they’ve become nearly incoherent.

Usually, the feelings of pity and sympathy go away when they express their frustration in such nasty and obnoxious ways, such as their embarrassing and juvenile antics and slanderous commentary directed at Attorney General Barr for doing his job and their attempt to change the law and the facts to fit the pictures inside their heads over his summary of a report that has already been released in full (aside from minor redactions.)  I haven’t seen anyone throw a bigger fit over a smaller complaint since the last time I was in WalMart and saw a four-year-old throw a screaming tantrum because his mom wouldn’t buy him a candy bar.

And now, as we kick off the week, the poor Democrats once again find themselves frustrated and furious at the fates for not arranging reality to fit their preferred narrative.  This time, it’s over the Trump economy, which is blazing hotter than a badly-managed California forest fire.  Unemployment has plummeted to 3.6 percent, the lowest since 1969 (Hispanic unemployment is at an all-time low, and unemployment for women is the lowest since 1953).  Job creation is vastly outstripping economists’ predictions, and manufacturing jobs are back.  Small businesses are having trouble filling job openings.  After years of stagnation, wages are rising, with average hourly wages reaching $27.77 in April (the Democrats’ big promise is to use government coercion to get you $15 an hour.) And the lower-paid working poor are benefiting the most.

How can the Democrats possibly run against that?  They tried claiming that the boom is entirely holdover momentum from Obama, but we all lived through Obama’s economy.  Giving him credit for the boom that took off the minute employers knew his policies would not continue (Trump measures his job numbers from Election Day forward for good reason) is like an anchor taking credit for keeping the boat afloat.

Faced with the best economy in over half a century, how can Democrats convince Americans to put their party of failed policies back in charge?  Their one hope is to use their 93% support from the media to try to convince people not to believe their lyin’ eyes or their larger paychecks because the economy really stinks.

There is some precedent for thinking this could work.  In 1992, the media helped sell the idea that America had the worst economy ever and only Bill Clinton could save us, when we’d actually just had a mild recession that was over before the campaign started.  And their badmouthing of the GOP tax cut worked so well that only 17% of Americans think they got a tax cut, even though 8 out of 10 actually did.

At the link, you can read the desperate reactions to Friday’s stunning new economic numbers from Nancy Pelosi (who grudgingly described the fantastic news as “promising”) and other top Democrats, who are spinning like broken records to try to convince us that 3.6% unemployment just isn’t good enough, and things will only really improve if they’re put back in charge.  Never mind that when they were last in charge a scant three years ago, they were telling us that 2 percent GDP growth was the “new normal,” manufacturing jobs were never coming back, and it would take a magic wand to negotiate any better trade deals than we were stuck with.

https://www.americanthinker.com/blog/2019/05/remember_when_obama_made_fun_of_trumps_magic_wand_to_fix_the_economy.html

So how can they convince voters that the Trump economy stinks?  Claim that it’s causing mental stress because Americans have too many jobs to choose from?  That all those ads for workers discriminate against “those who choose not to work”?  That capitalism is evil, so Trump is trying to stuff evil in your wallet?

I can’t bring myself pity them for having to run against the Trump economy, but I can sympathize with how tough it’s going to be to misrepresent it to people who are experiencing it firsthand.  In fact, I found this video that I think probably resembles a high-level Democratic meeting to come up with ways to run against all the terrible things Trump has done to America…

I agree with you 100% on your opinion of the democrats ridiculous, childlike reactions to our thriving economy and other Trump driven improvements in our country. I couldn't put it any better than you do here. I really have to laugh when they try to give Obama credit for the economy. Only their propaganda arm, sometimes called the MSM, could put this drivel forward as the truth. I sure hope America wakes up, smells the lies, and really does believe their own lying eyes and not the Leftist propaganda. I was very disappointed in the voters who elected the House Democratic majority. I juast hope they are paying attention to the to foolery going on there now.

If the liberal are really & truly sure the planet is going to die & we can save it by banning straws, I have an idea. How about banning disposable diapers !!! Talk about pollution. Let's see AOC & other "greens" announce that. That would be one way of getting rid of them (politically of course).

    Mike
What a great comment you wrote and truly their should be no reason at all for President Trump to win re-election and the Republicans winning both House and Senate. I hope we don't have many ill-informed people and those who vote based on hatred to basically steal the election. Our President needs our support more than ever and we definitely need to take back House and increase our stake in the Senate. Chuck Schumer needs to also get voted out of office.

    Governor,
I believe you and the other commentators are giving the Democrats too much credit.
There is no political disagreement. It is about power. I don't believe for one minute the Democrats believe in ANYTHING they say or support. (The 2 Muslim congresswomen and AOC are exceptions. They believe in EVERYTHING they say.) None of them are patriots; they are in it for power and money and are the definition of evil. They would sell their country down the river for financial gain and power. That is how to portray them.

I'm angry and sick to death with the Democrats and the news. I hope that the rest of America is too and votes them out of office.

    Dear Gov. Mike,
Your comments today reflect the frustration I feel toward the hatred and lack of professionalism that is toxic in the DEM responses. I taught school for 38 years, and a good chunk of time involved middle school students who can be a real challenge. We were constantly modelling respect and the whole school had a theme of RESPECT to relate to appropirate behavior. Patriotism was endemic in our public school environment with everyone stopping where they were each morning when the Pledge of Allegiance was led by students over the schoolwide speaker system. My office was along the main school hallway and I would constantly be standing by my doorway giving positive reinforcement to students and modelling appropriate boundaries in behavior for students passing between periods. When the Pledge came on, everyone stopped right in their tracks, put their hand on their heart and said or listened to the pledge. It was a given. The behavior and lack of respect I see in our DEM lawmakers in Congress is worse than that of rambunctious 7th and 8th graders. Students were never allowed to call others names, and that held true from kindergarten on up. We teachers were constantly stopping to guide students in respect for others and boundaries in behavior. Also, there was always respect for those adults in leader positions. That held true all the way up to the President of the United States! The rudeness and obvious hate that we see in the current political arena is far beyond normal manners, decorum and RESPECT for differences, and honoring freedom of speech. That is why it is not onlly disappointing, but also frightening that the adults in our government can behave and use verbage of such a despicable manner. Thank you for calling out daily the tragic absurdity that is destroying our country from within. I personally listen to every possible speech I can from the President, and I see a leader dedicated to the best for America, and having to deal every day with a barrage of the worst. We talk about the problem of bullying in the schools, when our officials in Congress are acting like bullies and intent on taking down the President as though he were another tyrant like the President of Venezuela! I have lived the life of a patriotic American who dedicated my life to helping children and passing along a legacy of pride in our government and the presidency. It is sickening to feel that has slipped away from our heritage.

the mental illness of the left is showing? Or is it the "continuous" mental illness? has the left asked real people if they got a tax cut? NO! so they don't really know who got one and how much. DUMB. not long ago they were talking about we will have smaller income tax refunds. Well YES morons, When the tax bill goes down so does the refund! How stupid is that. Has the left gone to IL, IN WI, MI and asked those factory workers how much more money they are getting? How much their tax bill was this year compared to last? I rest my case. If this keeps up for the next 12 months, the question is likely to be "Why should I listen to these idiots? All they want to do is take my money."

I'll tell you how the democrats can convince voters the Trump economy stinks, by republicans doing nothing in response that reaches the brain washed voting public, brain washed by congressional democrats, MSNBC, CNN, NYTimes and WAPO. We republicans are "preaching to the choir", speaking to people who already agree. NOW, republicans must start now responding to and correcting the democrat's lies about President Trump and everything republican in a way that reaches the brain washed voting public, that is, brain washed independent and democratic voters who know nothing about President Trump's positive record, who hear and read nothing positive about President Trump and republicans - believe it, it's true.

The difference between the Democrat's hissy fit and my grandson's temper tantrum at WalMart? Grandson got Grandma's hand across his well padded bottom.

I cannot disagree with you about the demoncrats.
About your TV show: the comedian on 5/4 was first I have enjoyed. I miss the Little Rockers. Some (most) musicians are lacking compared to your show on Fox. In my opinion it was a better overall program on FOX.

Their hatred for President Trump has so colored everything they say and do that no one with half a brain believes anything that comes out of their mouths. They just can't get past the fact that he beat them. My concern right now is making sure that they real politicians that tried to interfere with the election be center front and put on trial. They are running scared and still trying to put up a smoke screen. Well that screen has blown away and we are left with the real deceit in DC. It is time that the Republicans put on their big boy pants and make sure that the public knows all the details of the deceit against our president before and after the election. We deserve the truth for once!!!

The best spin on this was from a pundit trying to underline Pelousy's comments about what a dismal number the unemployment statistic is. The gist of what he said is that though the unemployment numbers looked good, the real "dire" statistic was the shortage of people looking for work. Only a true moron wouldn't see that as the other side of the coin.

    Hi Gov. Huckabee,
What concerns me very much (although it’s not about this article) is the fact that Nancy Pelosi just said that
she felt President Trump would not accept the results of the election if he should lose. My concern is that
by her saying this the Democrats are already setting up the public for Voter Fraud. I believe they will do everything in their power to “FIX” the election. Tampering with voter machines. Finding votes in someone’s car trunk.
They already want to have 16 year olds vote. (Those who are still in school being indoctrinated by the Left). Doing away with the Electoral college. No Voter ID at the polls. Can’t something be done to protect our Election.
I truly Trust and believe that GOD gave us President Trump at a time when he was needed the most. I continue to pray daily that He will bring this to a successful 2020 Republican election. Satan has infiltrated the Democrat party.
This is a fight between Heaven and Hell. Thank you Gov. Huckabee for your great Wisdom and great sense of humor. It’s delightful reading your articles. Sincerely, Pat Meyer
PS: You must be so proud of Sarah. (so are we)

Governor, regarding your comments today regarding the Democrats’ disingenuous attacks on the USA (MAGA!) economy, we have to paraphrase G.B. Shaw:

The Unspeakable are pursuing the Unbeatable.

Ellen and I love your show and your trenchant analysis. Your daughter Sarah is sharp as a tack, showing again the acorn doesn’t fall far from the tree! Next year, we hope to join you on one of your trips. Cheers, Mike

My daughter graduated with a four year college degree and can only find jobs that pay $12 to $17 per hour. Although a recent grad she has years of experience but jobs are hard to come by. She currently works customer service in a call center. We invest thousands upon thousands for a call center position?

    Dear Governor:
You have an unusual talent for using the English language to transform words into thoughts. I thoroughly enjoy reading your down to earth articles with the "folksy" comments.
How can the democrats possibly run against the present economy? You can bet your "bottom dollar" they'll find a way.

    Good morning Governor.
I know you read these comments and I just wanted to raise something I just heard on the news. A Democratic Congressman, can't remember his name...they all say the same thing, so the names don't matter anyway,.......just announced that they (the Dems) MUST impeach President Trump NOW because if they don't , he will win re-election. EXCUSE ME? If it is the will of the American people to re-elect the President, who are they to stand in the way? The chutzpah of these people is inbelieveable! I am a 73 year old, college educated woman and I am SO SICK and TIRED of the Dems telling me what is good for me! I try not to comment every day, but every Democrat in office needs a healthy dose of Prozac. Thanks for listening!
