It’s not a surprise to me that the more Americans heard of Adam Schiff’s impeachment “case” against President Trump, the less persuaded they were. A new CNN poll finds that after two months of this divisive political theater, support for impeachment has dropped to an all-time low of 45%.
But one of the most interesting aspects of this poll is buried in the details. We already knew that Republicans strongly oppose impeachment, and that support among Independents has been dropping and is down to 45% from 47% last month. But the big swing in overall support is due to a 13-point drop, from 90 to 77%, among Democrats!
I know what you’re thinking: it must’ve killed the people at CNN to have to report the results of their own poll. And you’re right: their chief legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin had a sputtering on-air meltdown over it and declared that he refused to believe CNN’s own poll.
When told by CNN political director David Chalian that it was a standard telephone poll, Toobin still refused to believe it, declaring that “life has shown us that polls are sometimes wrong, and David, that poll is wrong -- just because I said so."
Cheer up, Jeff. If you can’t make public opinion bend to your will, I’m sure there’ll be a piece of anti-Trump fake news coming along very soon to make you feel better. Meanwhile, this is my favorite comment, from a liberal reader of this story, posted at FoxNews.com:
“There is not a sharp drop. More FOX lies.”
Behold the evil power of Fox News! They’re even able to make CNN polls lie!
