Here’s a sentence I am absolutely thrilled to be able to write: Rep. Steve Scalise returned to the floor of the U.S. House yesterday.
Rep. Scalise spent about a month in the hospital and additional long months of physical rehabilitation (which will continue) recovering from extremely serious internal damage caused by a gunman’s bullet during...baseball practice with his Republican teammates. If he hadn’t been accompanied by the security detail afforded him as House Majority Whip, much more carnage might have occurred on that June day.
It was an emotional homecoming for the Louisiana congressman, as everyone in the chamber rose to cheer him. (Thankfully, nobody “took a knee” for this!) There were tearful hugs for a colleague who won the fight to live as surgeons worked to, as Scalise has phrased it, put him back together again like Humpty Dumpty. The prayers of many were answered today.
Sincerely,
Mike Huckabee

Schumer reacts
By Mike Huckabee
At the link is the Democratic leaders' response to the Republican tax reform proposal. As you could probably guess, they think it’s the worst thing since typhoid, that it’s “tax cuts for the rich,” etc. Chuck Schumer also wailed that it will raise the debt. That’s pretty rich, coming from the party that doubled the national debt in eight years without batting an eyelash. Probably the most entertaining response to that came from Newt Gingrich, who was asked on Fox News to respond to Schumer’s concern about the national debt and starting laughing so hard, he couldn’t speak.

Mattis angry
By Mike Huckabee
The Taliban and ISIS are taking credit for a rocket attack on Kabul’s main airport that was targeted at US Secretary of Defense James “Mad Dog” Mattis. Up to 40 rounds of munitions, mostly rocket-propelled grenades, struck the airport. But their attempt was a failure: they injured five Afghan civilians, one critically, but Mattis and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg had already left the airport hours before. And I repeat: the Taliban and ISIS are taking credit for that. Smart move. All they “accomplished” was to make Mattis angry. They won’t like him when he’s angry.

Hugh Hefner
By Mike Huckabee
Hugh Hefner, who built the Playboy enterprise from his kitchen table to an international brand of a carefree and hedonistic lifestyle, has died at age 91 of natural causes. His influence on the so-called sexual revolution is unmistakable, but whether that influence contributed to the decline of fidelity in marriage, a casual attitude toward sex, or treating sex as an act of biological passion rather than an intimate expression of unselfish love will be judged by the Creator of life, marriage and sex. But one cannot deny his shrewdness as a businessman, entrepreneur, and exploiter of human nature. His empire had fallen in recent decades, perhaps the victim of those who took pornography to new levels, leaving the more subtle Playboy approach seeming tame in comparison.
I can definitely say that in my time of counseling hundreds of couples, I never once heard a person say that Playboy magazine or its advocacy of following one’s lust made theirs a better marriage. It would be fair to say that Hefner didn’t create lust, he just exploited it commercially and made a fortune off it. But his death proves two things: hedonism doesn’t necessarily trim years off of one’s life as he lived to the age of 91…and that such a lifestyle comes to the same conclusion that all lives do, and our legacy will be determined by others.

Crying racism
By Mike Huckabee
At the link, an argument for why the left is wrong in accusing people of being racist if they are offended by the NFL players’ protests during the National Anthem. It shows that the vast majority of Americans have opposed disrespecting the flag as a form of protest since long before this NFL situation came up.
Crying “racism” and “white supremacist” has become the lazy go-to response on the left to any criticism of their tactics. It’s not only insulting and defamatory to label people as racists who are not racist, it also diminishes the power of the charge. That’s unconscionable because it gives cover to real racists and white supremacists. It’s like the story of the boy who cried “Wolf!” so often that his false alarms ultimately helped the wolves sneak in undetected.
As someone who grew up in the South during the civil rights era of the ‘60s and saw firsthand the struggle against real racism, it infuriates me to see people diluting the seriousness of that wretched and detestable sin by tossing around the term so cavalierly. There is no proof at all that football fans are angry because many of the players protesting are African-American, or because they aren’t concerned about real incidences of racism and injustice. They are upset that the players have brought their protests into a venue that has always been a politics-free common ground where all Americans could come together to enjoy the pure, untainted competition of sports; and that they are doing in a way that shows disrespect for the flag and the National Anthem. If they had kept the protests off the field and not done it in a way that shows contempt for the symbols that unite all Americans, then I doubt anyone would have complained.
