Today's Commentary: What, do top-security clearances continue for liars and leakers? -- Robert Wilkie confirmed -- Poll results -- Mark Levin's show -- A clarification on the Manafort cases -- Evening Edition - Daily Verse

It seems that almost daily, the presidency of Donald Trump has brought some previously unexamined issue of government protocol into public focus, and today is no exception.

Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky has been questioning the propriety of allowing former government officials to continue benefiting from their top-level security clearances, which, in the manner of Supreme Court appointments, typically and somewhat surprisingly last for life. He said last week he was going to speak to the President specifically about revoking John Brennan’s clearance. The continuing security clearances of former government officials is something we as Americans hadn’t really questioned, but now that the issue has been raised, let the debate begin!

Robert Wilkie confirmed

By Mike Huckabee

With all the hysteria in Washington over non-stories like the possible revocation of security clearances for leakers and liars who never should have had them in the first place, you probably never even heard one of the most important stories from Monday’s news: the Senate confirmed Robert Wilkie, President Trump’s pick as Secretary of Veterans Affairs, by a surprisingly lopsided 86-9 vote. But that’s misleading: this is the first time in the 30-year history of that post that any Senators have voted against a President's nominee.  And this isn't entirely the predictable Trump Derangement Syndrome.

Wilkie is incredibly well-qualified, having been assistant secretary of defense under George W. Bush and Pentagon undersecretary of defense for personnel and readiness.  He also vowed to “shake up complacency” at the VA, which is desperately needed, and my use of the word “desperate” is not hyperbole.  Veterans have actually been dying on waiting lists for care, and that unconscionable fact was covered up as if protecting VA bureaucrats' paychecks were more important than protecting the lives and health of our veterans.  I wouldn’t just shake up the VA, I’d slap it around a little, and I’m famously nice! So why the unprecedented opposition to Wilkie?

You won’t be surprised to learn that the opposition spans the ideological spectrum from far-left to farther-lefter; from Kamala Harris, Elizabeth Warren, Cory Booker, Ed Markey, etc. to outright socialist Bernie Sanders.  Their big objections seem to be fear that Wilkie will fire VA employees for their political views, not their poor performance (I have a feeling that really means that if they hold liberal political views, they shouldn’t be fired no matter how poor their performance is) and that Wilkie will be open to “privatizing” the VA – which translates as “giving veterans the option of seeking private medical care, the type Senators enjoy, rather than waiting around for government care until they die.”

I have the feeling that if we could change the law to force Congress members to get their health care from the VA, virtually overnight, our veterans would finally start getting the type of choice and high quality care they deserve.

Mark Levin's show

By Mike Huckabee

Sunday night, I did an hour-long interview on Mark Levin’s “Life, Liberty & Levin” on Fox News. The full episode isn’t online yet, but here’s a 13-minute excerpt of us discussing family, faith and freedom.  Thanks to Mark for the honor of being his guest!

A clarification on the Manafort cases

By Mike Huckabee

Some reports from last week said that Tony Podesta was granted immunity to testify against Paul Manafort in the trial being held in the Eastern Virginia U.S. District Court, the Hon. T. S. Ellis III presiding. Since this judge has demonstrated he has it pretty clear in his mind what special counsel Robert Mueller is up to –- getting witnesses to “sing” or perhaps “compose” –- I mused about what he might have thought about this particular immunity deal.

But when the list of witnesses against Manafort for the Virginia trial was made public, it did not include Podesta’s name. Turns out, Podesta’s immunity deal was granted in the OTHER Manafort trial, which is taking place in Washington DC.

Just wanted to make that clear. Gosh, it’s too bad that Mueller isn’t parading that immunity deal in front of Judge Ellis, who might have had some choice words for it.

Governor Huckabee your writing and speaking skills are by and far the best of any person. Your ability to address the true facts and “call it like it is” is refreshing and much needed. We agree with everything you write and are surprised that we have to review and cover such awful truths from so many dissidents. It is sad that we have to acknowledge so many greedy people in Washington who lie and steal and that our own children have to watch. The worst crooks and role models! It is all about power and greed time and time again and many lies and ridiculous excuses and ideas! Very glad you addressed the VA and the horrible stories that our vets had to suffer being treated miserably or die so bureaucrats could live high on the hog. What types of morals or conscience do they have? Who are they? We pray this will be resolved and we are glad that President Trump is placing good business people who care about vets and people to do what is right. How hard can that be? Keep up your good work and reporting to expose the truth. We need more of that until the swamp is drained. It is your clear voice of reason and heart that we listen to. We continue to wish you and your family the best and still wish you were one of our leaders. Past good presidents would be so proud of you and the rallying fight for truth and justice that you continue to provide for the American people. Bless you and keep safe.
