Like a once-sleek automobile that’s now up on blocks in someone’s front yard, the Robert Mueller investigation is falling apart in public.  Each new day brings more evidence that it’s been acting from the get-go as an anti-Trump hit squad rather than an objective fact-finding team, and that leaders knew it and took actions to cover it up.  By the time we’re done, we’re going to need a special counsel to investigate the special counsel. 

The latest revelations are that the agent who was exchanging anti-Trump Twitter messages with another agent he was allegedly having an affair with, and who was a leader of the “see no evil” probe of Hillary Clinton’s email server, was also the same person who changed James Comey’s description of Hillary’s handling of classified documents from “grossly negligent” to “extremely careless.”  That soft-pedaling was used as justification for letting her off the hook for lack of intent to expose classified documents, even though (as I pointed out back at the time) lack of intent is not a defense.  Also, that same agent conducted the questioning of Hillary aides Cheryl Mills and Huma Abedin, whom we now know misled the FBI and skated away while Trump staffer Michael Flynn has seen his life and finances destroyed.

This kind of selective prosecution and partisan targeting by federal agencies that should be above politics and reproach was a sad hallmark of the Obama era.  We saw this politicization of the DOJ, the IRS, the FBI, the NSA and other agencies.  It isn’t just unfair and unconstitutional for the people who are victimized by it, it also undermines trust in the government and erodes the bonds that hold us together as a nation, such as faith in equality under the law.  But I suppose we shouldn’t expect better from those who told us it would be horrifying and un-American to refuse to accept the results of the election, but have spent the past year vowing “resistance” and chanting “Not my President.”
