Today's Commentary:  New Benghazi info five years later -- China war in 2020? -- Bring your Bible back to school day -- Democrats unveil legislation -- Still unconfirmed -- News Bits

Even five years after the deadly attack on our diplomatic outpost in Benghazi, we’re still learning new information. At the trial of the alleged attack ringleader, the first witness called was a private security contractor who was guarding Ambassador Chris Stevens. He testified that Stevens knew he probably would not make it out alive, and he revealed what were likely Stevens’ last words as they were crawling on the floor of the smoke-filled burning building, searching for a safe room.

No, those words were not “I’m with her.” Click the link to read what he said. It should be told to schoolchildren and remembered alongside Nathan Hale’s, “I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country.”

China war in 2020?

By Mike Huckabee

A recently published book claims that China plans to try to retake Taiwan by military force by 2020. That would explain China’s recent military build-up and aggressive movements at sea. On the other hand, some say the plan revealed in the book is outdated and that China would now risk more by losing trade with the US and other nations than it would gain by attacking Taiwan. The wisest US response is to be prepared for the worst, but to make sure China is aware that if they attack Taiwan, the “worst” would be worse for them than for us.

Bring your Bible back to school day

By Mike Huckabee

Today is “Bring Your Bible Back to School Day.” It’s a nationwide event that started just two years ago and is already growing like wildfire. Yes, taking a Bible to school is legal and constitutional, and it won’t land your child in Atheist Thought Prison.

At the link is an op-ed about the movement, why it’s growing and why it is so important.

Democrats unveil new legislation

By Mike Huckabee

Not surprisingly, Democrats already have a new piece of gun control legislation locked and loaded. It’s one that even some Republicans say they are willing to consider: it would ban the sale and possession of devices that make semi-automatic weapons work more like automatic weapons. On the surface, it makes sense, since nobody is favor of private citizens owning machine guns (that’s already been largely banned since 1934.) On the other hand, the use of even unaltered semi-automatic rifles in killings is rare, and anyone who has the skill to convert a weapon like that would probably find a way to do it anyway, despite the law.

This may be a case of doing something that will make no real difference, but at least that’s a step up from “do something even if it’s wrong,” so maybe it will actually find some bipartisan support.

Still unconfirmed

By Mike Huckabee

There was also an unconfirmed media report that a couple of bullets were found in nearby aviation fuel tanks, which could mean Stephen Paddock was trying to set off an explosion that would have been even more deadly. On the other hand, converting a semi-automatic rifle to a replica automatic greatly reduces the ability to aim. The fact that the bullets hit the tank might have been a coincidence, and that they didn’t penetrate deeply enough to spark an explosion just a lucky break – although that would have been unlikely anyway (unlike in the movies, shooting at a fuel tank doesn’t automatically result in a fireball explosion.)
