If Democrats continue to (ironically) stonewall all of Trump’s efforts to build a wall, or to do anything to fix what even the New York Times now concedes is an immigration crisis, the Chief Executive does have some powerful tools he could use as a last resort. One that’s suddenly getting talked about a lot is the Insurrection Act of 1807, last invoked by President Bush to quell the L.A. riots in 1992. It allows him to use the National Guard and military to deal with the crisis. There’s more about it here.
There’s no confirmation of this story, and White House spokesman Hogan Gidley wouldn’t say whether it was or was not under consideration.
There’s no question that Trump has the authority to do it, although he would, of course, face legal challenges from Democrats rushing to federal judges to try to stop him. But if Democrats are that concerned about making sure he doesn’t invoke the Insurrection Act to deal with illegal immigration, there’s always the unthinkable option of ending their own ongoing insurrection and actually working with the President to solve the problem so he doesn’t have to resort to extreme measures like invoking the Insurrection Act.
Just as they threatened, a group of rabidly anti-Trump House Democrats took turns engaging in a marathon reading-out-loud of the entire, nearly 500-page Mueller report, starting at noon this past Thursday and going on until early Friday morning. Some of the Dems’ brightest bulbs took part, including Gerald Nadler, Sheila Jackson Lee, Ilhan Omar, Ted Lieu and Maxine Waters. They denied that was a cheap political stunt, or “a ploy to keep anything going.” The story did not say whether they denied that it was a waste of time or of the salaries they’re paid by taxpayers. I guess that goes without saying.
Just in case listening to 14-hours of a long, boring, ultimately pointless government report being read in some of the most grating voices since “The Nanny” left the air appeals to you, you’ll be thrilled to hear that they plan to release it as an audio book. So now we finally know the answer to the question, “What’s a worse Christmas gift than a Chia Pet of Don King?”
MONOLOGUE May18 2019
I grew up in a time when Walter Cronkite delivered the evening news on CBS. Over at NBC there was the team of Chet Huntley and David Brinkley and later John Chancellor. ABC had Howard K. Smith. I don’t ever recall having a clue what their political leanings were. Long after Cronkite’s retirement we found out he was actually a flaming liberal, but he kept his personal views to himself and delivered the news in a way that never signaled the kind of bias we regularly see with modern news anchors. Same with newspapers. I can remember when people trusted the NY Times as the “Paper of Record,” and while newspapers had editorial content, there was a big wall between the editorial and news sections of the papers. Not anymore. While Donald Trump might be trying to build a wall, the would-be journalists of today are tearing down those walls so that their entire operation is a commentary or editorial machine. The real losers are the American people.
News people hate it when President Trump calls them out as Fake News or labels some of them “enemies of the people.” We most certainly need a free press. It’s protected in the First Amendment as one of the bedrocks of our freedom. It’s historically been called the “Esteemed 4th Estate,” meaning that when it functions to hold government accountable and speaks the truth to power, it’s the closest thing to a 4 branch of government to keep balance within the system of separation of powers.
Increasingly, and exponentially with the explosion of social media, the wall separating opinion from factual news has disappeared like fog on a 100 degree bright-sun day. And what has disappeared is the public’s trust of the traditional media to give them facts. Journalism is all but dead except for a few remaining practitioners, like our first guest tonight Sharyl Attkisson or Lara Logan, both who were once at CBS, but have had harsh things to say about the politicization and weaponization of journalism as a sharp tool of ideological warfare instead of a source of raw facts and information.
I admit I speak of this often because we need to be reminded that Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram are NOT news sources that are reliable and neither is a Google search going to lead to the most important aspects of a story. Those are all private for-profit companies who not only are trying to turn a buck, but trying to turn minds toward the most liberal views of policy and politics possible. That means you have to become your own editor by asking the most fundamental questions of your news sources: Who is the source for this information? Is it anonymous sources? Background? Disregard the most of it. Is it verified by 2 or more EYEWITNESSES and not just 2 or more people with the same opinion? Is there a balance of perspective in the story and is the side being skewered given a fair chance to respond? Are speculations and opinions being stated as if they are “facts?”
About the only reliable source I trust anymore is my own website for news and the Bible for everything else. Anything else and I just ain’t buying without some serious verification and old-fashioned proof!
Even the strongest supporter of President Trump has probably, at one time or another, wished that Trump would not hit “send” on Twitter so often. At the link, in an exclusive interview with Fox News’ Steve Hilton, Trump explains why he uses social media.
Must-Read Column: Derek Hunter at Townhall.com examines how “progressive” Democrats have gone so far down the Crazy Trail that all of the alleged “common sense” arguments they fall back on to defend their positions can now be refuted simply by citing their more recent, crazy arguments. They’ve twisted themselves into logical pretzels and have met themselves coming back the other way.
A couple of examples: States like Alabama and Georgia can’t limit abortion because Roe v. Wade is the “law of the land!” Except they’ve spent the past two years asserting states’ rights over federal law with more passion than Jefferson Davis. They’ve refused to comply with federal immigration laws, even letting illegal immigrants vote; they’ve declared marijuana legal and cut the state in on the profits, and now, “magic mushrooms,” too. Some California leftists even want to secede from the Union (something they claim was “treason” when the Confederacy tried it.) So why is abortion the only federal law states can’t ignore?
Another favorite: “Men can’t get pregnant, so they aren’t allowed to voice an opinion on abortion!” But wait: you’ve taught us that gender is a social construct. Men can be women just by claiming they feel like one. “Men” and “women” can have the opposite sexes’ genitalia, and we’ve been reading about that so-called “pregnant man” for years. So how dare you try to silence someone by gender-labeling them?!
Read the whole thing, then try to think of any current issue that the left opposes or supports that you can’t refute by citing some other position they’ve taken previously.
On a more serious and tragic note, this story from the New England Journal of Medicine shows how dangerous and even tragic it can be to demand that medical records be changed to conform to our personal version of reality.
How about starting off the week with a fun game? Before you click on the story below, read the headline and try to figure out just what in the world this story is about and why the LGBT community is complaining. I’ll give you three guesses because even after you read it, it still might be hard to figure out. This is really looking for something to be offended about with a microscope. But the important thing is that a big corporation knuckled under and apologized for something this insane, which must really give them a power high:
“Calvin Klein apologizes to LGBT community for ad of Bella Hadid kissing female robot”
(By the way, I am now waiting for Ms Hadid to complain to the LGBT community that she is offended that they attempted to impose a label on her sexuality and just assumed that she is not a lesbian who loves robots, which she has every right to “identify” as and nobody’s allowed to question it. Same goes for the robot.
Calvin Klein should have taken a lesson from Elton John, who received similar complaints because Taron Egerton, the actor he chose to play him in the new bio-pic “Rocketman” (who is reportedly perfect for the role and looks and sings just like Elton), isn’t gay in real life. Because that’s what acting is all about: playing only roles that are exactly what you are in real life. We can’t have these “actors” going around pretending to be something they’re not! Elton’s response to the complaints was:
“That’s all bull-(BLEEP), I’m sorry.”
Well, as long as he said he was sorry…
If anyone had told me in the 1980s that one of the most moving, patriotic tributes to America would someday be delivered at the Pentagon by Gene Simmons, the fire-breathing bassist for the rock band KISS, I never would have believed it. On the other hand, if you’d told me that within 30 years, the Democrats would be openly embracing socialism…well, that I would’ve found more believable.
This might be God’s way of telling you that you either have too much money or you like toast WAY too much.
