I often ignore the current hair-on-fire responses to the latest Trump tweet until I see whether it will last beyond the next Trump tweet. These constant howls of outrage over everything Trump says and does are starting to make me feel like the owner of a dog that barks at everything. At some point, you stop leaping out of bed to see if there’s a burglar and just start fantasizing about kicking the dog. But in the past couple of days, there have been a couple of flare-ups that seem to have legs and illustrate larger points. So let’s take a closer look:

The latest wails of faux horror are over Trump saying that Democrats who sat on their hands when he mentioned the military or the flag were committing “treason,” and White House Chief of Staff John Kelly saying that Trump’s immigration plan would even help people who were “too lazy to get off their a**es” and apply for DACA. Democrats apparently don’t like being accused of treason (who knew?), and Kelly’s comment has the Hispanic caucus accusing him of racism.

More on those pesky text messages

By Mike Huckabee

The latest release of text messages between part time FBI employees and fulltime text message writers Peter Strzok and Lisa Page set off a firestorm when one newly-released text revealed that President Obama “wants to know everything we’re doing.” Obama had claimed that he had no involvement in the Hillary Clinton email investigation, which is what set off alarms. But later, the Wall Street Journal reported that the text referred to Obama wanting to know about the Russia investigation, not the Clinton email investigation.

This is one reason why I maintain a strict “count to 100 before going off half-cocked” rule, to see if the story has completely changed by the time I get to 75. I recommend it to everyone in the media. It does wonders for your mental health and can keep you from tearing out your hair and making a fool of yourself in public.

Incidentally, the best way to insure that nobody takes any of those text messages out of context would be to release them all publicly so we can all see the entire context. I know that real transparency tends to ruin the partisan fun, but it's a sacrifice I'm willing to make.

Russian hackers penetrated voter data

By Mike Huckabee

Here’s another story that I’d better douse with a bucket of cold truth before the media can fan it into a grass fire. The head of the DHS cybersecurity division reported that Russian hackers were able to penetrate the voter rolls in several states during the 2016 elections.

But wait: before Joy Behar starts dancing in glee, celebrating “proof” that Russia rigged Trump’s election, note what he said: some Russian hackers got as far as looking at a few states’ records of voter registration. There’s no evidence that they altered any of them. And they didn’t get within a mile of changing any votes or hacking voting machines. It just shows that (A.) some states need to beef up their computer security, and (B.) the Russians have some hackers who are at least as good at hacking into places they don’t belong as your ne’er-do-well nephew is.

Oh, and (C.) Hillary still lost the election fair and square because she was a lousy candidate who insulted half her base. You don’t need to hack into any secret files to figure that out.

Eight hours

By Mike Huckabee

Wednesday, Rep. Nancy Pelosi used a so-called “leadership minute” to launch into an eight-hour filibuster to promote legalizing members of the DACA program. I can’t say how effective it was because, to be honest, every time Nancy Pelosi talks for one minute, it feels like eight hours to me.

Paul Reiser's new Hulu series

By Mike Huckabee

This looks promising: comic Paul Reiser is producing a series for Hulu called “There’s…Johnny!, about a young employee backstage at Johnny Carson’s “Tonight” show. Reiser explains in the interview at the link that he took it on to honor his idol, Johnny Carson. There are also some interesting comments about the politicization of late night comics, with the observation that they don’t care if they alienate half the general public since they’d already lost so much of the general audience that they’re desperate enough to try anything if it attracts a niche far-left, Trump-hating audience.

That was something the scrupulously apolitical Carson never did. But then he didn’t need to try desperate measures, since he pulled an average nightly audience more than four times bigger than Stephen Colbert’s, who is currently hailed by CBS as “the king of late night.” That might be the only genuinely funny thing about his show that’s still left.

Drill baby drill

By Mike Huckabee

You had to hand it to President Obama: his Administration had a remarkable ability to phrase absolutely inane ideas in ways that sounded reasonable, wise and inarguable. Example: “We can’t drill our way out of an energy shortage.”

Turns out, drilling is exactly how you get out of an energy shortage. In fact, we’re so far out of it, America recently sold a tanker full of oil to the Middle East. That’s sort of like selling icemakers to penguins.
