Barack Obama: incorrect on both counts

Less than 3 minute read

August 14, 2019

This is a must-read article if you ever find yourself faced with someone pressing the liberal cliché that (as former President Barack Obama put it in a recent statement) “no other nation on Earth comes close to experiencing the frequency of mass shootings that we see in the United States. No other developed nation tolerates the levels of gun violence that we do.”

According to the Crime Prevention Research Institute, he’s incorrect on both counts (or as liberals would say if he were Trump, “He’s LYYYYING!!!!”)

https://www.westernjournal.com/ct/america-isnt-world-leader-mass-shootings-france-finland-switzerland-worse/

According to the Crime Prevention Research Institute, “The U.S. is well below the world average in terms of the number of mass public shootings, and the global increase over time has been much bigger than for the United States.”

A study of 97 nations that suffered measurable incidents of mass shootings found that between 1998 and 2015, the US ranked 64th in per capita frequency of mass shootings and 65th in the murder rate.  As you might expect, the worst were nations notorious for violence and unrest, such as Iraq, Afghanistan, and Nigeria.  But the US also came in below nations often cited as liberal utopias, such as Norway, Finland, France, and Switzerland. Incidentally, the first three of those four nations have very strict gun laws while it’s easy to get a gun in Switzerland, but they all outranked the US in mass shootings, showing that gun laws have little effect either way.

In addition, the US’s share of mass shootings declined over that time, while the rate of increase in mass shootings in the other 96 nations as a bloc was over twice as high as ours.  I’m sure people will point to the recent spate of shootings to claim there has been a huge jump since 2015, which would be easy to believe because of all the media coverage.  But in fact, in all of 2019, there have been a total of 62 deaths in the US from mass shootings.  The mass shootings at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, alone killed 51.

None of this is meant to downplay the seriousness of the problem or the tragedy of the deaths and injuries.  As the linked article notes, one senseless death is too many.  Instead of pointing fingers and laying blame, we should all be talking and working together to find ways to prevent this from happening ever again.

But it doesn’t help the situation to libel America as a violent, gun-crazed wasteland where mass shootings are happening on every corner.  The first step to solving a problem is to identify the problem accurately, not mischaracterize it just so you can apply your favorite one-size-fits-all “solution” (more gun control laws) that hasn’t worked anywhere it’s been tried.

And yes, I know that many people point to Japan, which has very strict gun laws and almost no gun deaths.  But that glosses over both the Japanese culture factor and the fact that eliminating guns did not eliminate deadly mass attacks.  In 2016, 19 people were killed and 26 injured in a knife attack in Sagamihara.  Last May, two people were killed and 16 injured (including over a dozen school children) in a knife attack at a bus stop in Kawasaki.

It all points to a sad but inescapable conclusion: you can’t fight evil acts by banning the tools people use to perpetrate evil acts, because they’ll always find new tools or ways around the laws.  You have to identify the real problem: addressing the evil.

Good article. Easy read. I also researched and found the number of deaths related to home invasions in Brazil where unarmed citizens were murdered in cold blood in several locations and was never mentioned in the News media.

Obama get paid well to speak publicly even if it's all lies!
Didn't he just buy a $15 million new home?

Obama is a liar and hates America. He did nothing but go around apologizing for our so called mistakes and did as much as possible to destroy our country. He ,his wife, and the Clintons belong in prison for a very long time

I follow Dr. Lott's research very closely and use it to make comments on social networks, articles like yours, and in letters to the editor. One interesting point you don't mention in this article is that the CDC, under the auspices of Obama's pen and phone researched "gun violence" and found that law abiding gun owners used their lawfully owned firearms to stop crimes, including public shooting which would have been mass shootings if they hadn't stopped them, between 500,000 and 3 million times per year. Ig gun control makes keeping and bearing arms more difficult and more expensive those crimes will not be stopped. This would result in an increase in "gun violence." I certainly hope that isn't what the gun controllers want. Though some pro-Second Amendment advocates fear they might want this to happen so they can use it to put even more gun control in affect like national registration which, historically, has inevitably lead to confiscation. Then, of course, "gun violence" would run rampant since only the criminals will have guns.

What I see in the Obama statement is just another, I'll call it mud to be decent, mud throw and hope some of it sticks to a portion of the population! The tragedy is that it does stick to a large portion of the population!

Since Japan was mentioned, they had a mass killing there a few weeks ago. No guns, but the guy set a place of business on fire and killed half the employees, about 34 of them. You don't need guns to perform mass killings.

Barack Hussein Obama was never truthful as far as I can see and he was never called on his lies by the main stream press because they loved him and his ilk. However, the opposite is true of Donald Trump. The three "major" networks as well as the Democrats hate him so, according to them, he can do or say nothing right.

You are absolutely correct. Fixing the wrong problem is as good as not doing anything at all. I don't know of anything that will allow Obama & the Left to recognize or admit the real problem, or search to help identify the real problem. Dealing with closed minded people, is like reasoning with a mass killer. Whatever you say falls on a deaf ear. I have difficulty with people just fanning the flames, hopping on the band wagon for personal gain, a yes man saying what his liberals want to hear. Facts don't matter to these people. They use whatever they want to validate their claim.

Obama has been wrong since his 1st year as our President, not because of the pigment of his skin but because of his destructive and anti- American policies.

He was a weak Elected Representative of our Country.

Obama’s political platform was about “identity politics” which only breeds contempt and separation of the United States history of working for a more integrated mix of ethnicities of working shoulder to shoulder
to move our Country as a whole closer together with more respect of each other rather than less respect which is what the Obama Administration & “identity politics” continues to spread.

Obama has been wrong for our Country because of his actions, statements, and political policies, which are the same for every Democrat Candidate and Congressional Member on both sides of the aisle forest too long.

We do not elect candidates on the pigment of their skin but they’re performance of how they govern & draw the citizens of our great Country closer together.

This is exactly where Obama has been wrong since his 1st year as our President, not because of the pigment of his skin but because of his destructive and anti- American policies.

I am a member of the NRA and do not support more gun-control laws unless they could be shown to actually reduce shootings without impeding legal gun ownership. That said, I am not familiar with the source you quoted in this article. I did a limited check by looking at wikipedia. Unfortunately, their data did not support yours. I was disappointed. You might want to do some fact-checking on this very important subject.
I benefit from your articles. Thank you.

This is part of a trend these days to blame inanimate objects instead of people for bad things that happen.
They blame the guns, not the gunmen. The U.K. even has an anti-knife campaign!
Legitimate medications are blamed for addiction, instead of the addicts who use illegal drugs.
The problem is a breakdown in family and religion, but it's too difficult to deal with that, so inanimate objects are blamed.

It is the PERSON that commits the attack, not the TOOL. If our media were at all truly concerned with dealing with the problem (take our inner-cities like Chicago, for instance, where we have the strictest gun control laws), they would report TRUTHFULLY about violence in our nation. EVIL is EVIL...PERIOD. In just the last 24 hours 2 Israeli civilians were attacked by a car-ramming and an Israeli Policeman was stabbed. https://www.haaretz.com/israel-news/.premium-two-israelis-wounded-in-suspected-car-ramming-attack-near-west-bank-settlement-1.7689726

We need to turn back to the Ways of God. Quit believing in abortion, artificial birth control, sex before marriage, divorce with remarriage, same sex marriage, doctor-assisted suicide, all that nonsense! The book Liberalism Is a Sin tells even more - what has been wrong with our society dating back centuries all the way back to the year 1517 actually. I strongly recommend reading Liberalism Is a Sin by Sarda Y Salvani.

I would much rather be shot than stabbed if I have to die either way. Nobody ever mentions taking knives away from us, but they are obsessed with taking our guns. I despise these people, and I have that right . Do they ever do anything good for America? No.

You cannot protect a nation against gun violence when you have open borders that allow gun runners, drug mules, and human traffickers. Gangs that sell guns right out of the back of trucks and vans. These illegal immigrants are selling guns in broad day light here in California and Newsome, Feinstein, Pelosi and Schiff all laugh and then blame Trump and his supporters for the violence. This blood shed is on them and the people who keep electing these people who say one thing and then do the exact opposite by giving criminals a free pass. Then to add salt in America's wounds, they give criminals free welfare, free Obamacare, free housing, free food stamps, free legal help, free college education, free tax refunds they never earned, free social security they never contributed to, and jobs ahead of Americans. While thousands of American Vets and American families go hungry, homeless, and have no hope.

Nailed it. No one wants to address evil. It points to a higher power, if you recognize evil, you have to recognize good.
