The deadliest church shooting in American history

November 6, 2017 |

Sunday, the First Baptist Church of the tiny town of Sutherland Springs, Texas, near San Antonio, was the target of the deadliest church shooting in US history. A gunman dressed in black combat gear and a ballistic vest entered the church during morning services and opened fire on the unarmed worshipers with a Ruger AR rifle. He killed 26 people, ranging from small children to a 72-year-old woman, and injured 24 more. He was later identified as 26-year-old Devin Patrick Kelley of New Braunfels.

After fleeing the church, Kelley was accosted by an unnamed neighbor who had heard the shooting, grabbed his rifle and rushed to intervene. The two exchanged fire, and Kelley dropped his weapon, got into his truck and sped off. But local resident Johnnie Landendorff had seen the exchange from his truck. He picked up the Good Samaritan gun owner, and the two gave chase at up to 95 mph, calling the police as they drove. Kelley lost control and crashed into a ditch. Police found him dead from a gunshot wound that was later confirmed to be self-inflicted. He had other weapons in the car, and it’s likely he would have killed even more people if the neighbors hadn’t intervened. Both men are being hailed as heroes.

At this writing, the motives for the attack are not yet clear. Kelley had a history of violence, having been given a bad conduct discharge from the Air Force among other punishments for assaulting his wife and child. He reportedly had no known terrorist ties. His Facebook page has been deleted, but authorities have the archived version and are combing his posts for clues. His banner photo was of an assault rifle. There was also a claim that his Linked-in page said he’d taught summer Bible school.

The Daily Mail spoke to former classmates who described Kelley as an “outcast,” “creepy,” “crazy” and “weird.” Some said he aggressively preached atheism, didn’t like Texas, and said that people who believe in God were stupid. There was a report that his Facebook page included “Likes” for various atheist activist groups. Could the fact that Sunday was the well-publicized International Day of Prayer have had something to do with the timing?

Before we knew anything at all about who the shooter was, what his motives were, or if this was a straight-up terrorist attack, some politicians and celebrities were already rushing to Twitter to politicize the tragedy, blame Republicans and call for more gun control laws. It was apparently lost upon them that he might have chosen his victims for the likelihood that they would be unarmed in church, and that his rampage was stopped not by the police but by a neighbor who intervened with his personal firearm.

At a time like this, our first thoughts, after shock and horror, should be what we can do to help the victims. Sadly, some of the more strident voices on the left mocked the idea of offering prayers, pointing out that the victims were praying when they were attacked, so prayer doesn’t help. That’s a shallow and cynical attitude, but I doubt they can understand why. They’re looking for something easy to blame – the shooter’s political beliefs, or better yet, the weapon he chose (a killer in New York City just murdered eight people with a rented truck; the chosen tool is irrelevant.) From their secular urban enclaves, they can’t understand why people in towns like Sutherland Springs believe in prayer. They don’t understand that there is a force in the world called “evil,” and some people are prey to it. For whatever reason or under whatever influence, they make a conscious choice to embrace evil and unleash it onto others.

One witness to the attack told reporters, "We just did what we do. We prayed…The Bible tells us that we overcome evil with good, and evil doesn't overcome evil."

Those of us who believe in the power of prayer will continue to pray for the victims and their families, for comfort for the loved ones left behind and healing for the wounded, that they be made whole and healthy again. And we’ll continue to pray that good will triumph over evil in people’s hearts, and there will be no more such obscene and tragic attacks. And we'll pray that when people like this start going off the right path that others will notice, speak up and intervene before they turn violent. Whatever Kelley’s motives for his horrific act might turn out to be, if he thought that he was going to destroy faith by attacking people of faith, then he was as wrong as he was evil.

I am an 80-year old widow who lives alone. I have been a Southern Baptist from my teens - I've never met them, but those folks at Sutherland Springs Baptist Church are my family! Yes, Christians of other denominations are family too. What hurts one of us hurts us all. My heart breaks for my hurting family in Texas! Christians practice love and seek peace with all men, according to Scripture. But Evil seeks to do evil, and that same Scripture teaches self-defense against the actions of Evil. I especially call attention to Chapter 4 of Nehemiah where weapons were carried while the Israelites worked - and those not working stood in defense! Other passages speak to "sell your coat and buy a weapon", and again, "beat your plowshares into a sword!" No Christian seeks to do harm to others, but certainly should be prepared to defend the right! Thank God for an ARMED man at Sutherland Springs who brought that senseless slaughter to an end! In spite of all the gun laws that can be made, evil people will still have guns. Or some other weapon! The Philistines took all the weaponss away from the Israelites so they were defenseless. They even had to get their farm implements sharpened by a Philistine blacksmith! Slaves to Evil masters then. And does anyone at all today remember Hitler! I remember WWII and it's horrors. An armed citizenry is all that can prevent such atrocities perpetrated by Evil, whether worldwide or in a tiny place like Sutherland Springs! Or at my own home - or yours!

Well said as always, Governor Huckabee. My heart breaks for these people. It is hard to wrap my head around this--but I do know that stricter gun laws or doing away with guns is NOT the answer. If one person in there had a gun, it might have been a different story. And if you want to lay blame, how about the Air Force who for some unknown reason fell down on the job and didn't report this guy to the FBI? Seems to me that we can blame the government for this if we want to blame somebody. It is amazing to me that people blame the Republicans when anything bad happens. Did these people really finish high school?

My heart was broken as I was watched the news this morning and heard comments from members of the families in Sutherland Springs, Tx. Such tragedies in America seem to be the "new normal", and it grieves my soul and spirit. Thank God for the two men who pursued Kelley; otherwise, there may have been more deaths or people hurt. Let us, as Christians, continue to intercede in prayer for these families, for our country, our President, and our leaders.

Thank you for your commentary! I read them every chance I get. It's sad that our media has lost all sense of integrety and honesty. I really appreciate you AND your daughters work!! Its really sad that there are people who would rather subvert our country for the sake of politics rather than be part of the solution. Maybe when the real criminals are in prison, we can get back to the work of making America Great Again.

It may be time for a brief Theology lesson: Who was the first Athiest? Clue: the first created being who thought he could live without God. Got the answer yet? We opened the gates of hell in 1973 so why be surprised at a world that is starting to look like a horror movie? And the first Athiest was Lucifer.

The big question is motivation. I've seen some pictures of Kelley with Antifa signs or logos, but with Photoshop you don't know if it's legitimate. Is this going to be a case like Las Vegas where large chunks of the truth (e.g. motivation, how he got all the weapons inside, are withheld from the public?

"The heart is more deceitful than anything else, and incurable who can understand it" Jeremiah 17:9
This man had been deceived apparently about the goodness and love of God for so long that it it eventually morphed into disbelief and then ultimately hate. Satan is deceiving many in our country and idol worship and man-centered thinking has been the result. I pray the Church will never accept the deception that creeps at the doorstep of our lives everyday and speak out as you do about it. I grieve and mourn these precious saints and that their testimonies will carry forward.

My heart grieves for the loss of innocent lives and the ones hurt and clinging on to their life. I know that they are in a better place called heaven. Jesus said we as Christians will be hated and persecuted for His names sake. We will continue to see attacks on Christians as the days of the Lord draw near. May God comfort and give peace and strength to the family and friends. Please continue to pray for them and for this Nation to repent and turn to God and that souls can be won over to the Kingdom of God. What the devil meant for bad, God will turn it around for good. God bless you Mr. Huckabee for all you do and your awesome newsletter.

People lie. People cheat. People murder because according to God's Word, they are sinners. We are all sinners in need of a savior, Jesus Christ. Mankind has blamed God for his/her sin since the garden of Eden, when Adam blamed God for his sin (this woman that YOU gave me). Nothing new here.

We agree completely with your viewpoint ... in particular my husband and I were just discussing the issue isn't with the weapon of choice, it's the lack of respect and value of life too often today. Unfortunately, too many leaders use these tragic events to further political views. We need more kindness and less blame. Your point about not shaking those with faith is right on. Thank you for sincerity and truth in your views, and please continue to use your presence to reach those most of us can't. God bless you and yours.

I am thankful that their was someone else with a gun to stop this monster. But I have to say, I see NO reason why anyone should have a R35 assault rifle. This man shot 450 bullets at these people because he was able to shoot so many and then change clips. You don’t need that kind of gun to go deer hunting. You don’t need that kind of gun to protect your family. I don’t think this issue is republican or Democrat. I don’t think this is conservative or liberal. We need to set aside these crazy walls we have built, and get these assault rifles made illegal. Now do I think it will solve the problem of evil hearts, no. But if we could make it just a little harder to kill so many people at once, wouldn’t that be wise? If it happens to someone in yours or my family...will we say “that’s enough”. I know he got his guns illegally, but can we not act like adults and stop assault rifles. Those who are dead now...it doesn’t really matter whether they were Republicans , Democrats, or Independants.
Evil will act evil, and if they want I guess they could use pea shooters, but let’s stop giving the keys of the bank to the robber, at least make it one step harder. Please Lord.

Sadly, Kelley is as much a victim as the innocent people he slaughtered - a victim of the author of evil. Many of those he executed are in paradise tonight with their Savior. But Kelley will most likely spend eternity in torment, because he had no defense against the forces of darkness. This truly is a tragedy all around.

We, as Christians, must learn to defend ourselves. We have security at our church but many small churches don’t. Even if you do, armed citizens can stop this. If just one person in that church had been armed, the death toll would not have been so high. Most of my friends “carry” in church and you can bet I’ll continue to do so. Get your CWP, people, and don’t be a victim! My heart goes out to the families left behind and yes, I will be praying for them.

Dear Gov. I had rather hear the report from you. God bless you, Carol Geary

There were those who saw the shooter's FB page before it was taken down, and apparently there was an Antifa flag, and that he had converted to Islam. One thing I do know, is that I don't trust our media, because they have not been telling us the truth since JFK's assassination, they continue to lie about the 9/11 terrorist attack, not hearing the families' victims of wanting to reexamine the official story, citing that building 7's fall, (which most Americans don't even know happened), was an obvious demolition, which was not even addressed in the official report. Was the media fair and giving honest reporting about the recent presidential election when they proved through all their polls that Hillary Clinton would win hands down? It's the same media that covered the Las Vegas attack, saying there was only one shooter, when many eye witnesses reported multiple shooters! It's the same media that hates Trump now in office and want to prove he is colluding with the Russians, who will not be honest about Hillary's involvement in Benghazi, or about all her deleted emails, or about using multiple servers, risking our national security. So do you think I will trust the media about what they will say about this shooter in Texas? The truth is that to trust in mankind is to be cursed, to trust in God is to be blessed. Let God be true and EVERY man is a liar. Paul said that he had only one man who was genuinely interested in the Philippians' well being, Timothy, because all the others seek after their own interests, not those of Christ Jesus. So that made two people concerned for Christ's body of believers in Philippi, Paul and Timothy. That's not very many and shows an important truth! So I will look to the most blessed hope of Jesus Christ's coming soon, when true believers will hear His shout, the voice of the archangel, the trumpet of God, and we who are alive and remain, will be caught up (raptured), and meet Jesus in the clouds, in the air and we will be with Him forever. We are to console each other with these words. So Lord, I pray that those in Sutherland, Texas, will find incredible comfort in this hope of Your Son's return, when they will rejoice seeing their loved ones, who won't precede them, but will meet them in the air and that until then, You will bring deep comfort, deep healing, deep peace, and a deeper faith in Your promise of eternal life where we will see all our tears wiped away. Praise God that this world is passing but God's truths and His victory is eternal and those who believe will be so mightily blessed. Jesus come quickly! Maranatha!

Forgiveness. The key to overcoming an attack on one's self is to forgive others.

I, a Christian, have had to fight hatred by forgiving. After my husband had an affair, I had thoughts of blowing a hole in the woman's uterus with a gun. The thoughts were like pictures of doing it in my mind. I was troubled by those angry thoughts, murderous thoughts. I loved Jesus with all my heart. I didn't want that hatred in my heart and mind.

I prayed, "Jesus, I don't feel forgiveness for her, but I am going to say the words. Help me to feel forgiveness for her." Totally in faith in God I said, "I forgive ****** for having sex with my husband."

I had a preacher, Kenneth Hagin's, Sr., pray for my broken heart to be healed. From that moment that Bro. Hagin touch my forehead and said a prayer for my healing, the gradual healing began. I no longer saw myself having that hatred in my thoughts. The sinking feeling in my stomach stopped whenever I thought of him with her. I was even able to talk to her in a friendly way. I was able to forgive my husband and recovered from the abuse I had experience at his hands and from his words.

Long story short, forgiveness didn't help her or him, but it gave me back my love and goodness and freed me from the hatred.

We all need to forgive those who have done evil things to us. When America learns to forgive, America will be healed.

I heard of it and when I saw the pictures I started to cry really hard...not that this is something new or that I am an emotional person, but quite frankly Mr. Huckabee the attack on a house of worship in any religion or belief is beyond evil in my opinion. There are no words and I think of the man who carried out his mission and wonder what could have happened to the innocent little baby that God gave his mother? We ALL have our dark side now and then when unexpected things or people hurt or damage us, and quite frankly without a belief in Someone who loves us in spite of our faults, today's atmosphere would be unbearable. So even though he became an animal, my heart also breaks for that poor tortured soul and I do pray God's mercy. But I most want to pray for the families all around our nation who are suffering at the hands of unstable people....Please God have mercy on America, and thank you Father for Mike Huckabee and others who help us all to come to grips with what is happening to our beautiful country. Amen

A very good example of how the devil takes down lives and destroys relationships with God. This man once went to church, from there turned from the Lord and became violent in his relationship with others,. etc.

The Las Vegas shooter was also an atheist, and had a prescription for antidepressants. This church shooter has been reported to be on SSRI's. Every mass shooting that I have been able to research properly I have found that the perp was on some kind of anti-depressant.
Gun control advocates are barking up the wrong tree. The common thread in mass murder isn't gun ownership, it's the over-prescribing of psychotropic drugs for every little emotional malady anyone decides to whine about. The pharmaceutical giants in this country aren't just killing us slowly with their toxins dressed up as medicine, they are now guilty of wholesale slaughter of Americans. If they didn't know before that these drugs can cause someone to snap and commit these kinds of atrocities, then surely they must be beginning to suspect it by now. Like the cigarette companies denying the link to cancer, the pharmaceutical companies will of course deny it for decades to come. The link between the two needs investigated. TODAY. Mr. Huckabee, you are just the man to shine a light on this connection.

I always love to read your posts. They are fair and balanced as Fox News people would say. I appreciate that you are open and honest and do not report or write things that are not proven fact. My take on this is that taking away our guns will not solve the problem. I feel it is my right to have a weapon. I fear for my life and that of my families lives. A gun makes me feel safe an in power to protect my family. It is not the gun but crazy, mad, upset, people who become unhinged over politics or religion that causes death. I support conservative efforts to limit immigration especially from countries that harbor criminal activity. I support President's Trump's policy of a merit based immigration system. How about letting people in to our country who love us, like from the Philippines? Why do Filipinos need a visa to come to America? That visa requirement needs to end. They love Americans, are non violent, highly intelligent, hard working people that rarely resort to criminal activity. We do not need criminals who can't or don't want to find a job. thanks for reading.

Sometimes my resolve slips and I feel like maybe our critics are right--"All you can do is pray"... then I read one of your messages reaffirming that the greatest thing we can ALL do is pray. Thank you again.

Thank you for your "take" on this tragedy. The "shooter" was definitely evil and as an atheist, was under Satan's control. I do not believe that guns are wrong but an assault rifle should never be in the hands of an ordinary person. The people who "sold" those guns to him are as guilty as he is. Prayers for the victims and their families.

"From their [liberals] secular urban enclaves... They don’t understand that there is a force in the world called “EVIL,” and some people are prey to it. For whatever reason or under whatever influence, they make a CONSCIOUS CHOICE to embrace evil and unleash it onto others." Thank you, Gov. Huckabee, for your insightful characterization of this latest hideous act of hate and cowardice and please allow me to have capitalized what I believe are the most relevant words: "EVIL" and "CONSCIOUS CHOICE." At the core/heart/soul/essence of ALL OF humanity's actions, and interactions in this life on this earth is, simply, the WAR BETWEEN GOOD AND EVIL. And that our Creator gifted us with "free will" so that every last one of us is allowed to CHOOSE - between doing good or doing evil. No amount of laws, or psychiatrists, or medications, or intellectual analysis can change that basic truth. It bears reminding ourselves, repeatedly, Matthew 24:12 - "Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold..." God help us.

Please ask President Trump to bring back FORCED MENTAL INSTITUTIONS....THIS is what will help. Reagan did
not do us any favors by shutting them down and law enforcement has their hands tied until the perp does
something like this. It should not take killing and wounding over 50 people for someone to report how
creepy and weird this guy was. Law enforcement needs to take it seriously and at least go talk to the guy and
let him know he is being watched or take a psychologist with them to question the guy.....This is not about
gun control, this is about MENTAL ILLNESS AND LACK OF RESPECT FOR THE LAW. He wasn't even supposed to
have a gun since he got in trouble with the military for spousal and child abuse. How did he get those guns?!!
Police should have listened to the wife and the judge who let him go free should have listened to the wife.....
THIS WAS A PREVENTABLE TRAGEDY.... Please respond to me...thanks...
