It’s been reported that the mass shooter who killed seven people and injured 22 last Saturday in Odessa, Texas, before being killed by police was previously ruled mentally unfit by a court and banned under federal law from buying a firearm.  But he bypassed a background check by buying the gun from a private individual, which doesn’t require a background check under Texas law.

https://www.foxnews.com/us/texas-odessa-gunman-mentally-unfit-buy-firearms-gun-law-loophole-background-check

Texas officials say they are discussing changes in the law to close that loophole, but they want it to apply to sales to strangers and not force people who are just transferring a gun to a family member to have to put them through the federal background check process.

Meanwhile, in Chicago, where at least 25 people were shot, seven fatally, during just the first half of the Labor Day weekend, Mayor Lori Lightfoot knows exactly who’s to blame: Republicans (FYI: Chicago’s last Republican mayor left office in 1931.)

https://www.westernjournal.com/chicago-mayor-shifts-blame-republicans-another-weekend-bloodshed/

Lightfoot tweeted, in a rant directed at Sen. Ted Cruz, that “60% of illegal firearms recovered in Chicago come from outside IL — mostly from states dominated by coward Republicans like you who refuse to enact commonsense gun legislation.”

This overlooks the fact that Chicago has “common sense gun legislation,” which mostly amounts to making it very difficult for law-abiding citizens to protect themselves, yet that seems to be no impediment to criminals whatsoever.  Her assumption that if every other state had the same anti-gun laws, it would keep criminals from accessing guns is quite a leap.  First of all, by her own admission, the 60% of guns recovered in Chicago that come from outside Illinois are already “illegal” to own, yet the criminals got them anyway, just as the shooter in Texas found a way around the law because that’s what criminals do: they violate laws.  Secondly, if 60% of the illegal firearms come from outside Illinois, then where do the other 40% come from?  Do criminals get them locally despite the anti-gun laws? Yes, they do.

A few years ago, a survey of young male state prison inmates found that only 10% had obtained their weapons by buying them from a gun store.  The other 90% got them through illicit means such as underground gun traffickers, sharing weapons with fellow gang members and other illegal means.

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/gun-sales-how-dangerous-people-get-weapons/

If we ever hope to disrupt the flow of weapons to criminals, law enforcement should be targeting those illegal underground weapons suppliers instead of adding more and more restrictions on lawful gun buyers and sellers who aren’t the problem and are just trying to protect themselves from the people with all the illegally-obtained guns.

If you’d like a case study of why Americans have more trust in phone psychics than in the media, this week brought the perfect example:

Bloomberg News reporter Ben Penn dug through some old Facebook posts by Trump Labor Department appointee Leif Olson and lifted some completely out of context.  Olson had clearly written the posts to sarcastically mock alt-right anti-Semites.  Penn left that part out and cast them as Olson writing serious anti-Semitic comments.

As the old saying goes, a lie can go halfway around the world while the truth is putting its shoes on (now, with the Internet, the lie can go around the world 100 times.) The Labor Department quickly announced that it had accepted Olson’s resignation (I assume that means he had no choice), and he was jobless and his reputation smeared, all because of a lie by an unscrupulous reporter who seems to think that "getting" someone in the Trump Administration is his job, and the truth be hanged.

I would hope that now that the truth has its shoes on and is ready to kick some tail that President Trump will order his Labor Department to rescind that unfair “resignation.”

https://www.nationalreview.com/corner/heres-one-way-to-stop-cancel-culture-stop-canceling/

It’s time to stand up to this irresponsible, unconscionable and dishonest bullying and just say “no” to the “cancel culture.”  This example is so unfair and so blatant that even anti-Trump liberals like Jonathan Chiat and Vox.com blasted it. As David French notes in the linked article at National Review, these partisan hatchet men only have the power that the rest of us grant them.  It is a supreme injustice that Leif Olson is unemployed while Ben Penn still has a job as a “journalist.”  But both of those injustices can be corrected.

A new study by a University of Houston management professor found that the #MeToo movement has had an effect on behavior in the workplace, but it’s a mixed bag.  On the plus side, about three-quarters of men said they were being more careful about potentially inappropriate behavior toward women, and about the same number of women said they were more willing now to speak out if they were sexually harassed.

However, “19% of men said they were reluctant to hire attractive women. 21% said they were reluctant to hire women for jobs involving close interactions with men. And 27% said they avoided one-on-one meetings with female colleagues.” It’s definitely a step backward for women if employers are reluctant (a three-dollar word for “scared silly”) to hire attractive women, invite women employees to after-work social gatherings or send them on business trips with male colleagues. And while the study didn’t address this, I can’t help but imagine that this has made many men gun-shy to agree to mentor female employers or accept female interns.

The researchers said that some of this is a manifestation of the “Mike Pence rule,” referring to the Vice President’s rule of never dining alone with any female other than his wife.  He was widely ridiculed for that at first, then he suddenly seemed like the wisest man in Washington.

I have to take issue with one statement in the linked article: “The results were surprising.” I was hardly the only one who predicted these exact unintended consequences. And let me be absolutely clear: I am not saying there should be any backlash against women for standing up against sexual harassment in the workplace.  All women should be treated with respect and all men should treat them that way. The lecturing from the left is particularly galling, since they are the ones who gave us the “sexual revolution,” while those of us from Southern conservative families were raised by mammas who made us fetch a switch if we ever showed disrespect to a lady.

This is not a backlash against women demanding the respect they deserve.  It’s a backlash against the weaponizing and politicizing of accusations of sexual misconduct, as we saw in the Brett Kavanaugh hearings, and the abandonment of the bedrock rights of due process and the assumption of innocence until proven guilty.  When we’re told that all female accusers must be believed, regardless of the evidence, and a United States Senator like Mazie Hirono declares that men should just “shut up,” even if they claim the charges against them are false, then men would be insane not to be extra-cautious to avoid situations that might make them vulnerable to false accusations that could destroy their careers and reputations.

If you want women and men truly to be equal, then both deserve the same basic rights of equal protection under the law.  This isn’t a matter of “sexual politics,” it’s just civil rights 101.

The Me Too Movement, where women are always to be believed can be very damaging and a true investigation is totally ignored! It happened to me with a group of middle school girls! It happened to Brett Kavanaugh and can easily happen to others in our out of balance society!

I also think that a background check is in order even when a gun is transferred within a family. ne person passed the check, but it should not be transferrable.

Mike, I am so very frustrated with the news media, both liberal and conservative shows, when it comes to the climate change issue. Rightfully the conservative shows disagree with the liberal shows but they both miss the issue. I will admit that I am not qualified to determine whether or not the temperatures are changing but I do know that if they are, it is because God has determined that they should change. God is in control of the weather and our climate and if He wants the temperature to rise then it will rise. Man is incapable of changing our climate no matter how much money we spend. God has been taken out of the equation. They need to read the Bible, especially Job chapters 38 & 39.
    Thank you!

Just like growing out of pretend "cowboys 'n' Indians" play during childhood, the principle of just concern for the well being of others by the age of responsibility should have been well taught by parents over the last hundred years or so. I know it was enforced at school when I was growing up. But lately - it's a crime ?

WHAT? So now Walmart and Kroger say you should not come in with your gun in a right to state? Who are they. This is going to stop the major shootings really? Now I feel like I should go and get my right to carry and put in my purse while going to Walmart and Kroger in my Ga mtns. Do you realize how many up here have guns per hunting and many in their gun racks in their trucks and seldom any shootings for all the guns. Turn on my news and Oh guess what in Atlanta, house invasions, car jackings, shootings , rapes , robberies and one and on? Gov read about how many in prison where they get the guns. We no longer for years have any stop and search and we use to why not now to find illegal guns.? Take every gun away oh and guess what we can bomb instead. Yes, stricter rules but sad as it is no way to stop those who want a gun.
Now the whole ME TOO , as an old lady now married 40 years and loved being married but I also worked in a hospital for years and saw many relationships started by both sides men and the women. I seldom saw any not accepted by one or both. Many who were married most stayed married interesting. Now we get 30 yr later some say they were sexually attacked. For those who this was real wrong. Now women have to step up all the way and stop those they feel have taken advantage and have real proof. Need to do this to benefit each other in the future on the men who are abusing their power if a boss etc? Not all are pretty women I have seen both sides on who get together. So far it appears that men with a lot of money and power are the worst and the local plumber etc is not? Hmm! Today if I was this rich and powerful man I would be very celibate and if married be careful of what is the game and who is playing it WHY? The day of sexual freedom may be gone per who can chance what can be said or keep you from a job or position when someone says oh he sexually attacked me back in 1965 and how do you now prove otherwise? We many have our husbands and sons what can we say to them today and if they play outside the ring and are not a gentleman is this worth it. Day of the Ho as we call them is gone and no longer do they stay quiet so can you even go there ask a former Gov in New York. Now to try to decipher what to now do and how do we move forward for both men and women today it is doggone scary.

FOR FIFTY YEARS I've been watching the NWO take over, one step at the time! However, now they are running instead of walking. The USA is headed toward defeat from within if we continue to allow it to happen. FOR FIFTY YEARS the ONLY organization that I have found that is truly standing up for our constitutional rights is not congress, not the DOJ, not the FBI, it's JUDICIAL WATCH!!! Actually, the DOJ & the FBI are fighting Judicial Watch! Judicial Watch needs to be supported NOW by every American to the Nth degree!

While I was no raving beauty I was considered attractive. I had a few incidents of inappropriate male behavior in the workplace. However, I found a look or a don’t do that comment sufficed. Laughing and telling them to stop kidding around worked too. I know there are men, particular ones in power, who can identify vulnerable women quickly and take advantage. They look for ambitious women or women who are the sole support of a family. Unfortunately, men being men, women need to be mindful and not miscommunicate. If a women comes to work with a very low cut top and a mini skirt, one can hardly blame men for thinking she is flirting. Most women take exception to that and say it shouldn’t matter, but you don’t see men coming to work in muscle shirts and shorts in most places. Women should also be very wary of drinking more than a glass of wine at business social affairs and refrain from flirting. Again the radical women would say that shouldn’t matter. Fair is fair ladies, don't give testosterone driven males, particularly the big egos, mixed messages. Both sexes have behavioral responsibilities. That being said sexual predators should be locked up for a very long time.
As to guns. There are so many firearms in circulation, you could close all gun commerce and take away as many guns as you can find and never get the illegal firearms off the streets. Look at the history of prohibition. People will find a way. There are very dangerous knives, axes, bows and arrows, easily made explosives , etc, that can harm a lot of people pretty quickly. It is behavior, morals and ethics that have to change. We have no standards. Religious teaching used to provide that as well as parents. That s eroding more and more every day. There are no longer any standards to bump against, no guidelines.

    Dear Governor,

I'm disappointed that our national debt has not decreased, and has in fact increased under President Trump. Much is said about low unemployment, and the growth of the economy, but I feel that the debt is our greatest threat, and it continues to grow. Do you have any comments about this?

As you may know, Winston Churchill had this to say about socialism.

Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy. It's inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery.

I thing that he hit the nail on the head.

People like Hirono and Lightfoot are people who can not or just not capable of working thru problems creating solutions God did not give them capacity to solve problems but he gave them enough capacity to create them the devil controls these people and he is laughing with delight for now. These people talk when the devil starts to lose control of them and they are talking have been for a couple of years day after day they are losing listeners can't wait for tomorrow. People outside of DC know only a couple of the Left candidate running for President

I disagree with you on believing sales of firearms to family should not require a background check. Some families have bad apples and many parents are surprised when one of their own is involved in a shooting. Many gifts or sales to family are not a problem but some are. I would feel much better if I knew for sure that a sale to a relative was safe and no harm would come from the sale.

Will the media ever admit and will American people THANK GOD for not allowing this cat.5 storm from moving over central Florida and landing in the Gulf of Mexico. GOD HAD HIS FINGER ON THAT STORM BECAUSE OF THE PRAYERS OF RIGHTEOUS CHILDREN OF GOD ASKING THIS STORM GO AWAY FROM OUR SHORES! Yea, sure it was climate change, when the Gulf Stream is full of warm waters.

I know how Democrats justify taking our guns, what I’d like to hear is how we’ll be made safer when only criminals are left with guns. Why doesn’t someone ask them that? And how can they take our guns without first repealing the 2nd Amendment?
And if you decide to confiscate guns from the generally law-abiding public, how do you plan to deal with the resultant Civil War? Are you going to develop positive solutions or stick with "feel good” legislation like the “Assault Weapons Ban” that previously produced no positive results in 10 years? Background checks are a good idea but as has already been demonstrated, they don’t work if responsible parties don’t populate the database. Red flag laws have some promise of keeping those who shouldn’t own firearms from legally purchasing one. It doesn’t stop illegal black market purchases. Red flag is also an opportunity for serious abuse of law abiding citizen’s rights!
Where is the plan to deal with stolen / black-market firearms that account for over 90% of gun related crime? Criminals don’t pay attention to the law!
