Today's Commentary --- Making some sense out of Gen. Flynn's "sentencing" hearing -- Criminal justice reform passes -- Trump charitable foundation is being dissolved-- Left exploits death of an innocent child -- The Baltic Experience 2019 -- Funny animal story & video -- Best gift book of Christmas -- Evening Edition - The Scroll -- Daily Verse

Just as predicted, ever since retired Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn’s hearing yesterday, in which his sentencing was postponed till mid-March, media commentators have gone out of their ever loving minds.  Yes, there were some dramatic moments in court, but nothing to warrant the kind of overreaction we’ve seen.  The “journalists” that we can usually count on to react this way have been true to form, and they have become tiresome.

As you know, Gen. Flynn pleaded guilty about a year ago to one count of lying to the FBI, even though the agents who talked to him apparently didn’t even think he’d been deliberately deceptive.  In May of last year, it seemed that Flynn was not going to be charged by the DOJ.  But after Comey was fired and Mueller took over the “Russia” investigation, Mueller found Flynn useful to the special counsel team and ended up charging him, working out a plea deal with him, and accepting his “cooperation.”  This three-star general has cooperated for a year now, and it looks as though he’ll be cooperating for another 90 days while he awaits sentencing.

Criminal justice reform passes

By Mike Huckabee

Last night, in a rare instance of bipartisanship, the Senate passed the prison reform bill sought by President Trump in a lopsided 87-12 vote.  It’s expected to pass the House and become law.  It was a rare bill that had the support of both liberals and conservatives.  Supporters claim it will make sentencing fairer and reduce the prison population of nonviolent offenders sentenced to long mandatory terms, lowering costs to taxpayers and helping inmates reenter society as productive citizens.  They also claim it will apply to people who made “mistakes,” like taking drugs, but will not allow for the release of hardened criminals.  Details at the link.

Trump charitable foundation is being dissolved

By Mike Huckabee

President Trump’s charitable foundation, the Donald J. Trump Foundation, is being dissolved following a court decision allowing a lawsuit by the New York Attorney General’s Office to move forward.  The AG accuses the Trump Foundation of a “shocking pattern of illegality” (to be clear: this is the Attorney General who came after the one who resigned due to allegations of sexual and physical abuse by four women, and before the one who just got elected and immediately announced plans to abuse her office by targeting Trump, his relatives and all his associates for investigations without evidence of wrongdoing.  Clear?)

The AG’s lawsuit seeks $2.8 billion plus penalties from the Trump Foundation, which sounds a bit excessive, considering that Trump claims it took in only $18.8 million during its existence and gave $19.2 million to charity.  The Washington Post claims that its biggest-ever donation was $264,231 to the Central Park Conservancy, but it gave $465,000 to the Navy SEAL Foundation and $350,000 to the Green Beret Foundation, so the numbers don’t seem to add up.

President Trump blamed the lawsuit on “sleazy New York Democrats” and said he will fight it and not settle.

Incidentally, part of the NYAG accusations include “unlawful coordination with the Trump presidential campaign” and “repeated and willful self-dealing.” You know, if they’d like to investigate a charity foundation set up by a well-known political figure that really did take in billions of dollars, almost certainly was used to advance and fund the personal political ambitions of its founders, and that operated in the state of New York, I have a far better target to suggest.  What, you say they’re not interested in that one?  Color me shocked.

Left exploits death of an innocent child

By Mike Huckabee

Many media members and other liberal activists continue to falsely blame US border authorities and President Trump for the death of a 7-year-old Guatemalan migrant child taken into custody in El Paso.  In fact, the girl’s parents chose to expose her to a long, dangerous journey under harsh conditions, and she had gone for several days without food or water before border officers found her.  She began having seizures just eight hours after being taken into custody, and US authorities immediately provided emergency care and hospitalization for dehydration and septic shock. Tragically, it was impossible to save her.

The left is blaming her death on US authorities because she was on US soil and under our agents’ care when she died.  This is like blaming a homeowner for the death of someone who was shot several times in the street, then staggered onto his lawn and fell down dead.

If you have any doubt that this is unconscionable exploitation of the death of an innocent child in order to score cheap, partisan political points, then consider this article about a Human Rights Watch report that lists 18 migrants who died while in US custody, all under the Obama Administration, and all were ignored by the media.

Funny animal story & video

By Mike Huckabee

Funny animal story & video:  Will Rogers once said that we should all live our lives so that we wouldn't be afraid to sell the family parrot to the town gossip.  These days, as people voluntarily live with cell phones, social media, "smart homes" and listening devices such as Amazon's Alexa, it seems impossible that the loss of privacy could get any worse.

And then you come across the story about the family parrot that spends all day long talking to Amazon's Alexa...

Best gift book of Christmas

By Mike Huckabee

Here’s a scary sign for the health of the publishing industry, and for literacy in general: Barnes and Noble released its annual list of the 20 best holiday gift ideas.  It includes mittens, a Buddha board, Mickey Mouse speakers, several kinds of socks…and only one book.

Even worse, it suggests that the people at Barnes & Noble don’t even know what the best gift book of Christmas 2018 really is:
