Today's Commentary:  Michelle Obama Is Not Happy -- More Crazy Political Correctness -- A VA Ruling You Might Have Missed

Michelle Obama is not happy about the move to roll back her healthy school lunch mandates. While I agree with her that kids shouldn’t be allowed to dictate their menus and eat pizza and ice cream every day, that wasn’t really the problem. I welcomed her to my TV show in the beginning to discuss this topic because I am an advocate for healthier eating and lifestyles (still the best way to keep medical costs down for everyone). But just as kids need a balanced diet, there also has to be a balance between healthy standards and taste. It would be healthy to serve kids a plate of steamed kale every day, but if it goes straight into the trash can, it’s not doing their bodies any good. The goal of the initiative should have been to help local schools make cafeteria lunches healthier and more appealing, not to impose stringent, complicated federal mandates from 1,000 miles away, forcing them to prioritize meeting government standards over serving up food that students could eat without gagging.

This argument is a good reflection of a lot of what’s going on with political discourse on all sorts of issues. One side insists it’s right and wants Washington to impose its viewpoint on everyone, while the other side resists and refuses to swallow what Washington is dishing out.

More Crazy Political Correctness

By Mike Huckabee

Just when you think political correctness on college campuses can’t get any more idiotic and totalitarian, the editors of the Portland State University newspaper fired a student reporter for accurately quoting what a Muslim student said at a public forum about his own religion’s treatment of non-Muslims in some Muslim nations – which was also accurate. By the way, the quote was posted on Twitter. The paper rejected even printing the story. The editor allegedly accused the reporter of being “predatory” and “reckless” and putting the Muslim student and his family at risk of violence by implying that they advocated the killing of atheists. Which obviously wasn’t what happened at all: the student was just accurately describing what happens in some Muslim nations, and the reporter quoted him accurately.

It appears that to this campus paper, promoting the preferred PC narrative is more important than reporting the facts, so anyone interested in telling the public what really happened has to turn to Twitter to bypass the media. Wow, they really are preparing students for a career in modern journalism!

A VA Ruling You Might Have Missed

By Mike Huckabee

I tweeted about this story several days ago in hopes it would stir up some media attention and public outrage, but it was largely ignored, even though it about 10,000 times more outrageous than the long-overdue firing of James Comey. A federal court ruled this week that the firing of the woman in charge of the Phoenix VA clinic that was at the heart of the waiting list death scandal was unconstitutional. She could even appeal to be rehired now.

She wasn’t even fired because veterans were kept waiting for medical care until they died, or for allegedly falsifying records to cover it up. She was fired after being convicted of accepting thousands of dollars in undeclared gifts from a lobbyist and sentenced to two years’ probation. First, a court ruled that she could keep over $9000 in bonuses she got from taxpayers during that time, and now, her later firing has been ruled unconstitutional. You’ll have to follow the link to see the reasoning. Although frankly, I’ve read the ruling and the Constitution (many times) and somehow missed the part that says incompetent, criminal federal workers can’t be fired. I can’t imagine the Founders even thinking that should be inferred from the Constitution.

This past week, some leaders of the public employees union were calling for stronger protections for federal workers who fear being fired by political officer holders (like the guy Americans sent to Washington partly because they wanted him to say, “You’re fired” a few thousand times.) Is there any other industry in the world where you can literally have people die on your watch, lie to cover it up, and still keep your job and get a bonus? (Or run for President?) If James Comey and this woman can’t be fired, then who in blazes CAN be?

It is time for Congress to enact serious reform of government union contracts, but not to make it harder to fire people. In the real world, there’s a word for such firings that currently doesn’t exist inside the government bubble: “accountability.”

I wonder if the school the Obama girls attend(ed) were required to serve the same garbage that other schools were required to serve, or were they allowed to ignore the rules since they were a private school?
